Full Tank Of Fuel S-Tronic 2.0 TDI

alot of people on here talk about how many MPG they get on there car, I've always been more concerned about how much it costs to fill up the tank and how many miles i get out of the car before the fuel light comes on and i have to fill it up again, i understand that if you know what MPG you are doing then you can work it out.
we took delivery of the car on April 5th and as promised the car was filled up to the top with fuel, on the way home i stopped off at the petrol station to fill it to the brim and managed to get another £8.37 in just over 6 ltrs
pressed reset on the trip and told the wife to take her time as she is the main driver

the fuel lasted her 12 days before the fuel light came on and had tripped 350.6 miles with a range of 35 miles remaining.
i was hoping to get at least 400 miles before the next fill.

i will continue to monitor the next few fill up to see if the range increases

one thing i have noticed is with the numbers is that if the car has a 50 litre capacity equivalent to 11 Gallon

50ltr / 4.5461 = 10.99 Gallon

350.6 miles covered / 10 Gallon = 35.06 mpg - with 1 gallon of fuel in reserve to cover the next 35 mile

just filled her up again tonight and managed to squeeze in 45.710 Ltrs @ £1.399 - £63.95

That seems really low. What type of driving? Is it mostly in town, stop-start?

I've always found the most accurate way to monitor consumption to be brim to brim. DIS MPG figures often over-read by 5-10% and the mileage left to empty on the DIS always seems to be pessimistic - I've often driven it on 0 miles to empty without issue.

Reading your post though, are you saying you drove 350 miles to light on, then a further 35 miles at which point you filled with 45.7 litres? If that's the case, it's more like 39mpg which, depending on your journeys wouldn't be as bad on a first fill.

Maybe I read it wrong though!

Ah, right. I had mis-read. 35mpg seems very low. Were they pre-dominantly short journeys?

10 mile to work and back then the rest round the doors, hopefully the next full tank may tell a different story, i bet she has been flying around, i could hear her coming down the street before i could see the car yesterday with the B&O, its awesome she thinks shes 18 again, shame she was blasting out Westlife

It's the short journeys killing it at the moment. The 10 miles to work means the engine isn't even getting warm. It would be worth giving the car a more substantial 30 min motorway blast once a week if you can to avoid any DPF issues. My neighbour has the same A4 as me and regularly suffers a DPF light doing short journeys.

I did the same as you when collecting my car and brimmed it at the first fuel station. I did the same after the 200 mile journey home and it returned 50mpg, but that was mostly a fairly gentle run down motorways at 70-80. Since then though, the DIS is indicating 45mpg which is probably optimistic and more like a true 40ish. Car still only on 350 miles though.

You need to do a brim to brim fill to get a proper MPG figure. See how many miles you get before low fuel light comes on. Then see how many liters/gallons are required to brim the tank again.

350 miles and 45 liters to fill it back up again would be....

45 divided by 4.456 = 9.89 gallons.
350 divided by 9.89 = 35 miles per gallon.

yeah mate thats exactly what im doing, as i said earlier the tank holds 50 ltrs or 11 gallon, when the fuel light comes on you should still have roughly in the tank 4.456 ltrs or 1 gallon of fuel in reserve.

this means if you were to fill exactly to the brim you should get 45 ltrs or 10 gallon of fuel in. with 10 (Gallon) being an easy number to divide by whatever miles is covered by the vehicle from brim to fuel light shoud be approx 45 ltr or 10 gallon

so i got 350 miles until the fuel light came on = 35 MPG

if someone manages 400 then it will be 40 MPG and so on. i think ill struggle to get anywhere near the 50 - 60 MPG audi are claiming.

there is an article in this weeks auto express saying that audi has had there hands slapped for false figurwes on their MPG...

Yeah I thought I might have been telling you how to suck eggs. I had an A1 2.0tdi for a while that averaged 44mpg, which I didn't think was very good, when it was supposed to average 62mpg I think. To get anything like 60mpg was a huge effort, and really i'd be holding traffic up which isn't good. I think i saw the article on Auto Express's website, unless there's another one. Audi do seem to be guilty of optimistic figures, although they aren't the only ones.

I don't know how many liters you're using exactly, but if it's about 50, then that's 43mpg. I'd say that's pretty decent for that engine, I wouldn't be disappointed.

I'm more than happy with the range I'm getting from my current A3 and hope my next car is equally as good.
To be honest if what's been written here is the best that the new 2.0TDI engine is capable of then I'm content that I made the right decision in cancelling my 8V order and sticking with the TFSI in my impending TT...

One point to note though is that the car is only 13 days old (well since you took delivery). The MPG will improve some as the engine loosens surely? (A bit at least)

My 1.4TFSI is one month old, and i'm up to 41MPG already, and I nearly went for the 2.0Tdi because of the fuel savings - starting to think I made the right choice in sticking with petrol!

Give it time.... like for like, your petrol engines will never beat diesel economy. And all that diesel torque too. Everyone will get different MPG figures depending on their journeys and driving style so it's a little futile us all comparing really.

I had an A5 2.0TFSi a few months ago when my A4 went in for some work. I was used to the DIS showing 550 miles to empty after a fill in the A4 and was a little shocked when the TFSi indicated 270 miles!

I'd love to get XXXCorps into a diesel though just to see what it could achieve... 45mpg plus in a TFSi is awesome.

Well, I thought I'd brim mine seeing as I was passing the fuel station. Over the last 200 miles of mostly urban driving it's averaged 44.5mpg.

Fairly happy with that, especially as it's still only got 400 miles on the clock. If it settles at 50+ once loosened a bit I'll be a happy bunny.

I'm averaging 48mpg with 700 miles on the clock. I'm pretty happy with that and hoping mid 50's will be possible once its bedded in.

Bear in mind the economy will improve somewhat - new diesel engines will be very tight and the economy will suffer until they've bedded in a bit.

FWIW, my 2.0TDI manual is averaging about 430 miles between fills with 95% short urban trips, which isn't too bad considering most journeys are short trips of a few miles. I did some testing the last time I was on a long journey and it will do over 60mpg at a steady 60mph and about 54mpg at a steady 70mph.

My wife's A3 is getting 52/53 MPG easy, but the average speed was 50 MPH but I like to nail it and not concerned about MPG..

Hehe, yeah I'm fully expecting all the diesel users to be reporting 50+ after a few months. Regardless, still very happy with the economy on my TFSI, but I do sometimes miss the torque of my old 2.0tdi.

This is fooooked up, that's poor for a diesel, around town or not. I had a 330d that I just drove around town in and still got 39mpg average pasting it most the time, then my 320d BMW I used to get 45 mpg average nearly 55mpg on a run! Again not driving steady.

I hope this is wrong or changes severely when the car is run in! Or I will be seeing about swapping mine for a 1.8 tfsi or give it to my mrs and get new s3.
