MOT Question

My MOT is due soon - say the expiry date is 10th May but it says I can present car to a MOT centre from 10th April and I went to see them on the 10th April
what will the expiry date be of the new certificate?

10th April 2014

or

10th May 2014?

It will be one year from the date of issue. So say you get it done 10/4/13 it will expire 10/4/14.
You have the option to present it for a new MOT upto one month prior to expiry

Not true.

The OP's new MOT will be 10/5/14 if he gets it done (and it passes) on the 10/4/13. I did this in January even though my MOT ran out at the end of Feb. My new MOT runs until 23/2/14 but was done on 17/1/13.

I'd rather get these kind of things done sooner rather than later

Yep me too I always go a month before in case it doesn't pass then I've got 7 days to get a free retest or 30 days to get a bigger problem sorted (and have to pay again, though). It passed after a few easy things (wipers, handbrake tightened) so I had a 12.5 month MOT.

The mrs just had her mot done two weeks before it expired and it has an expiry one year from the date of issue.

I'd check your MOT certificate very carefully if I were you. The computerised system will not allow what you've said to happen, unless something like the VIN or Reg number has been entered incorrectly and it's not picked up the previous expiry date.

I had this when I took my Cordoba to a garage where I previously had my Ibiza MOT'd. Both cars used the same reg plate. The garage ended up issuing an mot with the VIN number of the scrapped Ibiza, but everything else from the Cordoba. I only spotted it as I checked the expiry date on the MOT and it hadn't been set as 12 months plus a couple of weeks. It was set as 12 months from the date of presentation which I knew was wrong.

As the garage had cut and past the VIN number from my old Ibiza off their invoice system rather than entering the Cordy one from scratch, it didn't pick up the extra couple of weeks.

I just had my MOT done yesterday (expires 30th April 2013) and can confirm it now expires on 30th April 2014.

I always go i mean every month before in situation it doesn't successfully pass then i've got just one week to get a 100 % free retest or 1 to 30 days to get a larger issue categorized and have to pay again, though . . . . .

Your car can be presented 1month early in your case 10th april2013 it will then expire on 10 th may 2014.

as said you get effectivly 13 months mot. 1 month of current and 12months of new mot.

as for if it fails the mot and you can then fall back on the old mot, it dosnt work that way, if your car fails it fails, the old (current) mot then becomes void. so then in that case you would loose a month. just have it dont a week before mot time, and also no mot is a civil offence, if you were stopped as long as the car isnt hanging off the road and the police class it as "roadworthy" they just give you a 7 day producer, but then the other way round they can order you to have a retest if you have a mot and its not roadworthy, its mainly the traffic police that will give you a £30 fine and order you a 48 hour or could even be a 24 hour restest before its mot is invalid.

May I confirm an MoT question. If my MoT runs out on the 11th of May, can I drive the car on the day it runs out? Can I drive on the 11th May?

on your mot itll say what time its valid to. but technicly it has a mot till the 12th
