Low Profile / Stretched Tyres wear out quicker?

Hey everybody,

I have been trying to look around on the forum and Google generally to find out whether "Low Profile" or "Stretched Tyres" wear out quicker then normal set ups?

For example have a set of 18 x 8J which I assume normal set up would be 225/40...would perhaps a 215/40 (bit stretched) wear out quicker?

I'm running 215 40 18s on a 8 j can't wait to get 225s fitted tyres wear on insides after tracking twice and the handling is awful I actually am trying to wear them out rather quick to get them back to normal never again will I be Haveing stretched tyres hope this helps

I was thinking of getting 215, you're putting me off lol. Are they really that bad? Most of my miles are motorway, what are they like on the motorway?

Motorways okay but as soon as I go to go round a island or just a little play down some roads it's just **** takes all the fun out of the car I've tried all Diffrent pressures in the tyres it feels the like the sidewalls on the tyres are rolling over. Haveing had bilstein b8 shocks and h and r springs fitted since putting the tyres on Its doing my head in tht I can't push it to see what it's capable off. I have noticed that most Peaple tend to go for a 35 instead of a 40 so perhaps that would be okay ?

I was hoping to go for some 215 😞 but seems like you put me off them lol!

But generally does a stretched tyre wear quicker? This is something I'm really curious about.

I had stretched tyres on my MK4 Golf, went through front tyres far too quickly! It was the outside of the tread wearing down due to cornering I assume...but then again my alignment may have been out. Had issues with grip as well, for looks and clearance they are fine but practicality not so great. As dubindan said if you are doing a lot of motorway driving then you should be fine but anything else can be a pain. Hope that helps!

Basically unless your park it up then drive to shows init yeah but if you like it to look good but be practical and handle as it should stick with the 225 s saves money in the long run and keeps the smile on your face After Haveing mine 2 months I was debating to get normal tyres and chuck these in the bin I hate them that much but couldn't part with more money to now I just hammer them.

The insurance angle worries me about wrong size tyres.......they obviously affect the handling!

That for sure, but i doubt a tiny stretch would affect handling? Don't know if this is the correct way to choose tyre size but if you consider it as 8J = 203.2 mm; So i assume 215 mm isn't so much a incorrect size?

A 215/40/18 tyres is for up to 8.5J according to tyre manufacturers, this isn't a stretched tyre in the "scene" sense so not a big issue and shouldn't completely ruin handling.

I was running Falkens and moved to 225/40/18 from 215/40/18 due to a number of reasons, even on the 225/40/18 tyre it said "not for use on 18.5j" or something along those lines on the side of the tyre so it may vary between manufacturers.

It'd have said not for use in 18.5" rim (as in diameter), no tyre will have a designated width spec on the tyre though. Generally most tyres are the same permitted rims, 215/40 is usually 7.5-8.5J.
