Hey guys,

When I bought my A3 a couple of months ago it only had one key. So I purchased a second hand one from eBay for £24 (exact same part number just to be safe) and I also bought the transponder for £7 on eBay, and the blade for £9.

I sent the first fob back as whatever I tried would not work - now the exact same thing is going on with the replacement I've been sent.

Has anyone had any experience of programming a used fob? I know it can be done yourself somehow. I've tried various methods from online - all to do with putting the working key in ignition, then new key in door and pressing buttons etc. No lights flash, nor does the horn sound so I'm getting pretty annoyed with it now.

Does anyone have any idea about this? Whole idea of buying myself is so I could avoid the £190 quote from Audi to do the entire job. :uhm:

Thanks!! 54 reg A3 2.0 TDi Sport.

The transponder needs coding to the immobiliser, dash clocks , without the SKC you wont get anywhere.
You can reprogram the new fob with vcds .

But a used fob can be 100% programmed to a different car provided it's got a new transponder in it? Cheers

I'm sure you'll need to go to Audi...

The 'buttons' can be reprogrammed to lock and unlock your car... But only at Audi or someone who's compitent with VCDS

The 'transponder' (the little glass tube) has to be NEW, of a certain type (sorry don't know that one) and can only be programmed once as said above providing you have the SKC

That's okay - just want to be sure the fob can be re-programmed provided it has a new transponder which it does. Don't want Audi fobbing me off ;) as they were trying to sell me a key and the coding all for £190. Too dear.

I'm sure when I asked the dealer the same question I was quoted £150. Haggle a little with this info.

Yeah I usually haggle them down a bit but even £150 is a ridiculous amount. Just going to get them to program my key I bought for £35 I think. Fingers crossed it works

the key shouldn't have been lost, when i sold my passat at 11 years old it came with the 3 orignal keys key number keyrings and dealer leather fobs

if i'm buying a car with 1 key i will use that to knock price down if it wasnt mentioned in the advert

Wish I'd thought asking for money off when I bought mine!
I'm in the same boat 135 quid for the key and have to get it programmed by audi. I tried the local VW garage and they wouldnt do it.
Expensive... Yes. But for peace of mind plus they will take the old key info off its worth it.

Yeah I got the car at an excellent price anyway, but there's no point spending int he region of £190 when you can get it done closer to £50 or £60.
