Bad driving caught on camera

I could be wrong but this is my take on the situation....

I don't think it needed to be such a close call. It looks like you didn't brake at all until the last second.
The other driver definitely should have given way to you, BUT you should have been able to see well in advance that they weren't going to stop and slowed down a bit. Also you appear to turn into them even though they are already (wrongly so) in front of you, which makes it an even closer call.

From the video it looks like you've got plenty of time to brake to stop you getting so close to them.
I suspect you held your speed instead of braking so you could get close to the other car and emphasise what a knob he/she is and then beeeeeeeeeep them.

To be fair, that's what I sometimes do when someone's driving p*sses me off. So if it is the case of that then I don't really blame you.

Your analysis is 100% correct. I'd anticipated him coming through and timed my approach and turn-in to achieve one or other of two possible outcomes; either him deciding at the last moment to stay where he was, or what did actually happen, with me having a controlled "close call".

What the camera didn't quite pick up, sadly, is the look of bewilderment and shock on the driver's face when he finally realised I was there.

and from doing that it could have ended up bad.

Hmmm he should have been giving way, but I don't really understand why you didn't brake and just let him do it, rather than getting so close. This happens all the time on every roundabout

poor driving of you're part........ good job you had Blackvue to recorded you're efforts

People are really bad when it comes to roundabouts. We should have a stop sign on every entry to a roundabout.

I don't even get annoyed with these scenarios anymore, it’s so common these days, it's just a way of life!

We should start a 'near miss' rant thread, and it will fill up daily with stories easily.

How was it poor driving, Robbie? I had full control of the situation, had anticipated it well in advance, and judged my speed to ensure there was never any danger of impact.

He entered the roundabout before you did. But he should have given way.

I would do exactly the same as you did. No time for twits like that.

I have to agree with the other responses, this was a situation that could easily have been avoided.

The best road driving advice I was ever given was "drive to anticipate and avoid the accident", it has served me well. There have been many times when I have been technically 'in the right' but it was better for all to take action to avoid any incident.

It has been well researched that 90% of people think they are above average drivers and therefore have way too much confidence in their abilities behind the wheel. No matter how good you are you never know what the other driver might be about to do. Although I've done a fair bit of driver training I I've found driving as if I'm about average and anticipating what just might happen has served me well so far.

Just one word of caution on cameras too, on track days you can be certain somebody will have an off playing to the photographer who's stood on one of the corners, trying to do something impressive to show their friends. There is a danger that with the camera on board you might go looking for the sensational and this changes your driving style.

I've made plenty of my own mistakes though I still think this is the best one! If you're going to have a near miss this is the best place for it (forward to 2m if you just want the near miss!), this still makes me sweat and expect a loud bang at the end:

tbh think you went looking for it...... careful what you wish for, could have back-fired. On small local roundabouts it's common to work on the first come first served principal and having Blackvue installed in this case caused aggressive driving on you're part.
Hey, it's only my take on it....... stay lucky

Hard for us to judge.
We're all looking at the car driving onto roundabout.
Driver is (probably) looking right, looking ahead, checking mirrors, looking right again as you enter roundabout...etc etc.
All of a sudden your looking in someone's ear on the roundabout.

What happened in this video?

Did you lock up/out brake yourself, or did you forget the track layout?

I wish I could have listened to the engine rather than a song :)

Its poor driving from whichever angle, they had ample time but probably was on their phone/radio/eating a choc-ice.
I had an M3 nearly t-bone me and the kids thru a red light...I hope they time it wrong next time with a tanker

I had to look again, IMO you are the bad driver there. Very little braking aproaching that roundabout, although the other car probably didnt see you till last minute due to surroundings, he seemed to be going a lot slower into the roundabout, maybe a fraction before you entered it. He also had no indicators? I would have sat back and avoided any possible indecent. You was probably going too fast for him to notice you.

Your blasting of the horn and aiming right at him shows bad attitude on the road, use the horn to warn others of your presence, not to vent anger.

The decceleration is a bit deceptive, as there's a lag of about three seconds before the on-screen speed indicator catches up with the actual speed. My entry speed into the roundabout was about 6mph. As for aiming for him, to be fair, I was turning right. Plus, my headlights were on and I was indicating.

Still this has been a very instructive exercise, seeing how differently people perceive things. I'm certainly not annoyed or offended at the critical responses. You can't be; if you post online inviting comments, you have to accept not everyone will see things your way, and if you get criticised, you have to suck it up.

One thing in particular was in MBK's post, when he talked about the possibility of, in effect, playing to the camera. I've given that some thought, and I think (hope?) I wasn't. Since installing the camera in January, I've pretty much slipped into a mentality of forgetting it's there until something reminds me - as the above incident did.

But what this whole thread had done, is act as a reminder that the camera doesn't just capture what other drivers do - it also captures what I do. So all in all, it's a good thing

Yep got sucked in to the Elise's braking point, ran out of brakes, luckily he saw me and adjusted his line away from the apex just in time to avert disaster. At the time it was an oh **** moment, looking back it's just funny. And definitely all of my own doing, no racing drivers excuses here!

It's an R26.R there is no engine noise, unless you count the Darth Vader sucking induction sound! Brilliant car though one of the best I've owned.

Changing the subject entirely, it's a bit disappointing to hear how droney the engine sounds when picked by the Blackvue's microphone.

This is the big thing. For me, knowing i was potentially going to expose my bad driving if the footage was ever called for, i think id make a subconscious effort to drive better and defensively rather than aggressively. I drive a lot, I see a lot of idiots on the road and avoid them. Since learning my satnav has the capability of showing my entire driven journey back with speeds and locations I have even switched on the speed warning on my cluster for 70mph just to be sure I dont auto pilot with right foot down!

Playing for the camera and acting badly on the road is insane.

Even with me criticizing your driving (mainly the horn aggression), i wouldn't go so far as to say you were playing for the camera.

I don't particularly like the idea of interfering people having on board cameras. If I have overtaken someone on a country road etc or was doing over 70mph on the motorway etc, I really don't like that some nosey person could send footage to the police. The fun of driving is being taken away day by day

I really like the camera.

Like @udiA3 said, it makes you drive a bit better cause you can be caught for bad driving just as much as any one else on the road.
I feel my driving has improved cause its all on camera and I wont be able to blag my way out of a incident any more.

I've caught a couple of bad drivers with my camera where they was aggressive, arrogant and down right dangerous.
Thought about sending them to the police but I doubt very much they will do any thing and even the accident I've seen the police did not want the footage.
I have sent some footage to companies showing how bad their drivers are.
Seen one today coming in to work, who went through a red light. He stopped, waited and then just drove through. That will be going off to his company today/tomorrow.

If you are worried about people with cameras in your cars and what they do with it, don't drive like a knob or in a manor that could cause injury to other people.
If you must do it (like most of us do) do it when its quiet, so if you do wipe out, its only you or a pole you take out.

I like to think if more people had theses camera and people know they are being filmed that a lot more people will drive better and the road would be a better place.
Unless we start acting like the Russians.

The other drivers shouldn't really have pulled onto the road about but I would have said you entered a bit quick with the intention of creating more of it than was really needed. All guilty of it but as has been said, could have easily backfired. I stood and watched a girl do similar the other year, guy turning right across her path, she had loads of time to stop, but didn't slow down, unfortunately the guy turning right panicked and stopped and she piled straight into him. Was all totally avoidable had she accepted he was a plank and made some allowances in her driving ie slowing down a little) he would have made the turn, she would have gone on her merry way and avoided a lot of hassle.

When reaching the roundabout you should
  • give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights
  • check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining
  • watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all
  • look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off.
Points to note, yes the other driver should have given way to the right, but you also have a responsibilty as well under point 3.
