Hi guys,

I have a 2008 Audi A3 1.4 TFSI which currently has a standard round steering wheel on, i have bought a round multifunctional steering wheel off eBay which was taken out of the same model and year as mine...

Will the wiring that needs to plug into this new steering wheel already be there tucked away?

Will the airbag fit?

And is it an easy and simple job?

If anyone is local to TF9 and wants to earn some cash to do a proper job then drop me a text to 07920113019

ive attached images of both the current steering wheel that's fitted now and the new steering wheel i want to put on..

Cheers in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

Forget it fella, your airbag wont fit bottom line.

Also need to see what airbag fitment is underneath your current, as there are 2 types, ideally airbag needs pulling forward, pics taken of inside of current wheel to ascertain fitment for your airbag which is predominantly the expensive part unfortunately.

Cheers for the help, i have taken the current one steering wheel off and the new wheel goes straight on but yes the air bag doesnt fit and looks like it needs the round type which is another £250 , i understand i need to change the steering wheel module as well which are £50 but i cant find the loom which is going to go from the module to the wheel if that makes sense?

Cheers!

The steering module you require is more like £150 not £50 - part number 8P0 953 549 F. ONLY this version will work. The wiring loom is about £40 from Audi.

I have a mfsw available that your airbag will fit if you're interested.

I have completed a similar change on my A3. I upgraded my SW for a 2009 MFSW and had to purchase a new steering ECU and harness for the airbag. MFSW cost £40 (eBay), Steering ECU £70 (eBay) and the harness was £42.70 from Audi. I did not have to purchase a new air bag as my old one fitted fine. You will also need to get it coded, be warned, I had no power steering, ABS, ESP for a few days while I found someone to code it all in.

Good luck with the upgrade, if you get stuck PM me and I can help.

Shame you brought that steering wheel really, my steering wheel is practically the same as yours but has the normal air bag (non-round), so was a straight swap from my old steering wheel, no need to fork out for another air bag.

Got my steering wheel at a bargin for £40 in perfect condition.

My steering wheel (minus the S-Line badge)

Audi round MFSW

As said, steering control module won't be as cheap as you think.

Shame you didn't post this about a week ago, as I've just sold the module you need on eBay for £110.

Can you send me a picture of the steering wheel you have? If you know if one for £150 let me know, on eBay is £295

Cheers

I was looking at wrong moduels, there is one on eBay for £295 :(

If anyone has or knows to a steering module, steering wheel and harness for sale for a decent price then let me know, thanks for everyones help :)

His airbag will not fit that wheel !

It will and does fit! I have a 2006 A3 with the same sline steering wheel as him and my air bag fitted perfectly into the 2009 MFSW as I pictured above. There are ONLY 2 types of steering wheel air bag, round for the newer wheels and the one pictured above, never seen any others.

Why wouldn't it fit?

With due respect mate you are wrong. Look carefully at the picture of mine and the picture of the one on ebay.

Then come back and tell me that there are only two types of airbag !

I have considerable knowledge and experience with wheel and airbags as I fell foul of the complications three years ago.

You should not advise people without knowing the facts as you could encourage them to waste money !

I will award marks for a spot-the-difference competition !! ( I am speaking about fitment differences only, not cosmetic )

Apologies, I see they are slightly different in the size, looks like my image is for a 'shorter' air bag and yours is a 'longer' looking air bag. Am I right?

I am sorry for miss-informing, looks like I to have been miss-informed! :(

No probs mate. There are three differences :-

1. The socket for the wiring harness is at 2 o'clock on mine and 4 o'clock on the other

2. On mine there are two pins, one each side of the fixing screws, which are not on the other and,

3. The angle of the fixing screws is much flatter than the other.

The airbags are the same size but have different frames. That one on Ebay is from an A4. I know that because I have got one which I bought in error 3 years ago ! If you know of anyone with and A4 that wants one just let me know.

EDIT : there is also another difference in fitting but it is difficult to tell from the photos.

Thanks for the info Mike. I will pop that in the knowledge bank for next time.

Do you know what, I think I was told there are only 2 types by an Audi engineer when I was enquiring about upgrading my steering wheel, I could be wrong, either that or the retro fit people I also asked. Who know's, at least I now know the truth.

I will be more careful the next time I 'attempt' to help someone.

Thanks again.
