Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Does it turn over ok Prawny, and how many days until flat?

Turns over faster than my old stock battery used to crank it Dave, and I left it for almost 3 weeks in January under 4'' of snow, all hooked up with the alarm active, and when the snow melted the car still started just as eager as ever!

Impressive stuff nick....and even when most of it goes completely over my head.

Shift light finished :)

only a simple unit with 4 LEDs, 3x blue leading up to the shift point and then a red LED at the shift point.

The blue lights come on at 200rpm intervals before the shift point. In this vid I had it set to 6800rpm so the first light comes on at 6.2k ish

a little clip, very slow gentle pull to show the light, not full throttle, and no gear change because I don't have 3 arms!

now set at 7200rpm :)

it's just a stand alone shift light unit from ebay chaps.

It's a 3 wire install, 12v live, earth, and a signal wire from the coilpacks switched feed, so really simple :)

Nothing done in vagcom at all.

Took a few photos this evening, and even experimented with Instagram, which as you can see, makes everything look silly

I'm afraid not!

there is some dirty worn out grip tape, and some very worn satin black paint with the factory grey primer showing through!

at some point I need to pull everything out and clean it out and paint the inside again, and apply a 2 pac laquer so it hardens properly and is a bit more durable.

Anyone near Basingstoke / London got a spare headlight switch? Mines snapped off, earning infant drive the car at all in the evenings because its too dark when I hget home and I can't turn the lights on :(

Hi prawn pal can get some ADR cams or AUM is there any gains worth swooping wile my engine out lol

Ill be honest mate, save yourself the hassle.

The gains are questionable at best. Stick with what's known to work.

Ill save £50 that's all ha thought there might be a noticeable difference or well

Looking very good prawn
Quick question what battery have you one for?
And also when you flick the battery switch does it keep power to the clocks, radio etc or is it just pure isolation?

Shift light seems a good idea but i
imagine at fully throttle by the time you notice the first blue light it's time I shift? Can you change the rpm that the blue lights come on or is it set?

Inside is looking really mean! Can wait to have mine on the road!

Cut off switch kills EVERYTHING mate, the idea is to kill all possibility of an electrical fire / problem in the event of an incident. It's also wired into the main Ecu power feed, with a return from the starter earthed through a resistor, so when you pull the switch absolutely everything cuts instantly.

ontue shift light you can adjust the rpm gap between the lights yea, from 50-100-150-200. Due to the rate at which the beasty eats up the revs I've got it set at 200rpm as like you say, in second the lights whizz across so fast, hence setting it at about 7100rpm now as I've still got a few hundred revs to play with.
At 7200-7300 I found it was too close to buzzing the limiter and if you wernt very quick to act on the red light it clipped the limiter.

The only issue is its now like a challenge every time I drive it to see how many lights I can get in each gear!

red light in 3rd is easy enough, any lights at all in 4th is a bit fast

That's what I assumed Nik I was just wondering if it coil be extra security (take the key with you when leaving the car) but thinking about I guess it's best jut to not mess with it and leave it for when its needed!

Yeah I guess it climbs a bit slower in 3rd and 4th so it will be ok!

Sounds like a fun game! Haha

however I put it, I strangely don't feel any happier about this, the elapsed time between gearbox failures this time :(

Again? What's happened this time pal?
Gonna have to take the hit and look at uprating it!

Ouch Prawn, not good. Though I'm sure you will have it sorted in no time.

Maybe time to looking into some sort of treatment for the gearsets? or are going to throw another standard w/lsd 02J in?

Out of interest, do you have any idea on how much headroom you have with your current injectors(440cc if i remember correctly)?

bosch 440's at 3 bar, and I'll be honest, not alot of headroom I don't think mate. it's a strange one. 440#s at 3 bar won't fuel 350bhp with me7.5, yet they will with me3.8. No idea how, or why to be honest!

To the gearbox, it's an odd one, and it's not actually failled yet, but I think it's about to if I drive it again.

When i set up my shift light the other day, I had to hold it at 3.5k for about 30s whilst programming it.

When I went back ito first to pull off, I got the weirdest resistance to movement, almost as if I'd left the hand brake on, followed by a jolt forward then all was well

Had that odd resistance then free up a few times since. Almost like a binding cv or caliper similar, accompanied by a transmission shunt kind of noise.

Just decided to experiment in the road when coming back from a drive, Forward and back about 10 times and couldn't replicate it.
So went to pull into drive, and it rolled forward 2 feet then the front wheels LOCKED solid like an emergency stop.

Turned engine off, into neutral, Got out, and pushed it backwards, and the wheels did exactly 1 full rotation then it jammed solid going backwards too. All in neutral. Engine off.

Pushed forwards and back a few times to find the point it jams, then it freed. Fired it up and it sounds fine, engages all gears fine, so I drove it into the driveway REALLY carefully, about 30 yards, and as I rolled the last 3 yards to a stop it caught again and she juddered the last few feet with a loud scraping noise from the box

Feels to me like a single diff crownwheel bolt has come loose and it catching as it goes round at certain points

Engine is fine, all gears select fine, drives fine when not 'locked', I'd just got back from a 35 mile flat out thrash.

No exit wounds, no fluid leaks.

I'm going to get under and confirm it's not some crazy freak thing jamming the CV's or shafts, but they way it sounds I think it's far more internal than that.

Box out and stripped down, see what's occuring.

Fix it, or 6 speed 02M? but that would mean finding an 02M diff at sensible money, which is unlikely to happen.

Argh. cars

You could partially fund this by selling your LSD to jaardo, from his thread he ****** needs it! LoL

would it be a massive expense to go 02m and LSD?

Sean

More I think about it the more it's staying 02J.

I don't like stock 6spd ratios, I think they're crap. I'd need new shafts, a new internal slave, then HUGE expense on an 02M LSD, followed by HUGE expense on a SMF and paddle clutch for the 6 speed, all of which is mint on mine.

As per usuall, fix and continue on this one.

****** dude :( Yeah the LSDs for the 02m aren't cheap (when are they ever?). I went with a Wavetrac but got a healthy discount.

Even trade on a wavetrac is more than the RRP of an 02J ATB, its huge money still, then with the need for a SMF and paddle clutch its turning into a £1500 minimum swap. Just not going to happen :(

the box itself hasn't broken, its not engine related as it runs perfectly, and its not box related as it selects all gears and drives fine. The cyclic noise happens at the same point each rotation of the wheel, and the only thing that's connected 1:1 to the wheel is the diff, so I'm confident its that.

Just need to pull it apart and see if its done much damage.

I'd consider the diff for a reasonable price, if it opens a window for you.

Sorry to hear yet more box issues Prawndogs, when will it ever end :(

Alex at AKS had a second hand six speed box with LSD fitted for sale last time I spoke to him. Also TSR on SCN are doing a GB on Quaife diffs if that helps. Have you tought about a diesel six speed?

Sorry to hear about the box prawn! Hope you get it sorted soon!

All windows are closed. We are better off staying with the current set up.

Stick with the 5 speed setup dude, you know you want to. Makes some financial sense too, not that that really matters, right?!

Home at 6:30 last night, by 8:30 the box was out and I was back inside. Not the quickest job in the world, but I'm glad it's out.

Drained the oil, which confirmed it definitely the right move pulling the box.

More metallic than the average 'Pimp my ride' Wagon.
