Post Remap Question

Hey fellas,

Just looking at getting some advice and maybe some reassurance from some of you guys who are running Stg 1 or above.

My car is an S3 S-tronic, just over a year old, recently serviced and as far as I can tell, in good health. I decided to take the plunge and fit a Neuspeed P-flo CAI and was pleased with the results. Lots of sucking noises and a small amount of DV on lift off.....all good. I then ordered a Shark Stg 1 map and STS and installed the performance map. I went for a spin and noticed that (other than a big performance increase) when the revs are going through the 3-4k rpm range, I get a sort of flutter noise. It's like lots of small DV noises that happen really fast (psst psst psst psst). I must stress that this is while I am still accelerating, not on lift off.
I've contacted Shark and they confirm they have issued the correct map for the S-tronic and have suggested it could be a characteristic of the P-flo. My worry is that there is a leak somewhere and I could be causing damage to the turbo if it is some sort of surge.

Has anyone else on here found the same results after a remap with a P-flo fitted, or indeed any other CAI? I plan on taking the P-flo off and re-fitting the standard engine cover/air box to see if the noise is still there.

It'd be great if someone could share a little advice on anything I could do to check for problems. I have checked for codes using the STS and found nothing.

Personally your doing all the right things. Get the P-Flo off and get the original back on. I have heard afew people binning the P-Flo for various reasons. The Shark Stage 1 remap is IMO one of the best around and thats not beig biased as Im a dealer. I have tried numerous remaps from the top companies and for overall reliability and driveability it wins hands down. Out of all the S3's I have mapped not one has had any problems and afew of them have had other tuning mods done such as CAI's, twintakes so see how you get on with the original fitted and report back with the results.

GuyJ, my car is a 2012 so has the Rev D diverter valve fitted which I believe are supposed to be really well made and reliable. I will look into replacing it if the noise I still there once the CAI is off.

Just a quick update, when I took the factory air box off originally I noticed it was quite oily around the big pipe going to the turbo. I take it this is why people fit catch cans? Or could this point towards a problem?

Nothing wrong with your car. It is slight compressor surge that you can feel, as the S3 turbo has a larger compressor in relationship to the exhaust housing. The only way round it is to cap the mid range boost or change turbo.

I have SHARK Stage 1 with Milltek TBE but stock air box and havent noticed any untoward sounds.
Sounds like a CAI issue.

Car is also DSG btw.

Yes, many times. The compressor flows a lot of air - upto 400hp worth and yet spools up very quickly. This is due to the small hot side which means that too much air flow is produced low down the RPM range where the engine cannot consume it. As a rule normally map to just below this surge line unless a customer wants all out.

Same thing has happened to mine 2012 but manual been running stage 1 fine for a good few months got the amd cai kit fitted within a few hundred mile engine light came on with code p2177 running lean so flashed it back to original map running fine now !!!!!!

Got a service due in the next fortnight so going to wait and see what audi say and take it from there .

just means might have to forget about stage 1 and go for stage 3 instead hahaha

I've done 20k with the P-Flo. Very happy with it, bar the heat-soak issues as its black...and metal....so design is a little poo in that respect.

But its up to stage 2 no problem and 340bhp.

Rick, if its a surge can't that harm the engine? I'd have thought it would have been mention a lot more as the Shark Stg1 is a generic map isn't it? Maybe it's just the P-flo that vocalises this surge? That's 3 people on this thread with it and all have P-flo fitted.

A friends Edition 30 Golf stage 2+ with ITG makes it. it's not just a P-Flo thing for sure.

The amount of surge here is probably going to have minimal effect on turbo life, but I can't quantify it.

Anything that frees up (read: makes louder) the intake system is going to amplify the sound.

Hi All i get this aswell. I dont have a remap but have the revo air intake and also a milltek cat back. I was hoping it would get fixed with a remap but doesnt sound like it

Remapping your car will not get rid of an induction noise..


Does anybody have Rolling Road figure 'before' and 'after' with an induction kit please? Just for my own interest. Cheers
