Folding Mirror package

Hi guys, has anyone got the folding mirror package with their A3 ? Reason I ask, is that I'm stil debating between an A3 SB and the new Golf GTD (when it's available to configure at the end of this month).

However due to a narrow pathway at the side of my garage, folding mirrors is preferable and I have them on my current Scirocco. On the Rocco they fold by pivoting though about 90° to lie quite flat against the windows, and certainly saves a good few inches.

However on the new Golf, I see it's like the BMW 3 series, where as they fold they swing upwards, and don't really seem to save much space at all. Are the A3's mirrors like this (anyone have a photo of them folded), or do they just pivot like the Rocco ?

Oh, and whilst I'm at it, is it possible to fold them and open them automatically with the remote key when locking and unlocking the car ? I know the new Golf does this, but one of the frustrations of the Rocco, is that the mirrors can only be folded using the button inside the cabin not with the key.

I haven't seen them fold but I asked the dealer yesterday. He says they fold when you lock the car with the remote. On the older model they use to fold when you removed the key.

I have this package. The mirrors can be set to fold in when the car is locked automatically. They also swivel approx 90 degrees and lie quite flat against the window. Will try and get a photo for you tomorrow.

An added feature with this package is the auto-dip passenger mirror when selecting reverse for parking... very handy

BMWs' swivel upwards is enough to bring them in beyond the width of the car. It would be unwise to have your mirrors in any closer than the car width as it might lead you to believe you've more room to spare than you actually do. I presume the golf is the same.

I deliberately don't want folding mirrors, not on my current car and not on the next one. The mirrors act as a sort of protection shield for the rest of the car. I'd rather have a damaged mirror which can easily be replaced than damaged metal/paintwork. I live in a narrow street and especially vans and trucks tend to leave very little space when passing. If the garbage man needs to avoid my mirror I know he will not touch the rest of the car. With folding mirrors I'm afraid one day they will get too close and do some serious damage.

Very good point. Although Audi charged me 500 to fix my mirror after a lorry knocked it off! Luckily the company paid, but goes to show it isn't necessarily the cheaper option!

If they're going to hit your parked car then they're going to hit it; a mirror, folding or otherwise won't make any difference to careless driving surely?

I think the key thing is that it's careful but not-quite-as-good-at-judging-size-as-they-think-they-are drivers that are more likely to hit you on a narrow street. I'm in the same situation where the streets between my tenements have a car parked on either side and just enough room to squeeze a car down the middle (Google Maps), so I regularly take my line from the wingmirrors on either side and I've nudged a few over the years. It's a good point synthdood - I feel a bit better about not speccing it now.

Dent removal and repaint or even worse, requiring new doors or panels, is gonna cost way more than 500.

I haven't seen them fold but I asked the dealer yesterday. He says they fold when you lock the car with the remote. On the older model they use to fold when you removed the key.

To summarise...

1. The mirrors fold in when the car is locked via the fob (if set via the MMI)
2. The mirrors unfold when the ignition is turned on, not when the car is unlocked (again if set via the MMI)
3. The mirrors swivel sideways through approx 90% until the face is almost parallel with the window.

The previous model only allowed folding or unfolding of the mirrors via the switch inside the car. There was no other way of doing it and no way to set them to fold automatically when the car was locked. Another dealer employee who doesn't have a clue I'm afraid - why am I not surprised?

Audi don't seem to be able to make up their minds with A3 mirrors. They all used to fold in sideways until the latest iteration on the previous 8P model, which for some reason suddenly folded in and up at an angle like BMWs do. Then they reverted to the sideways fold again with the new model. They've also been through about four or five different mirror designs on the 8P model. The one which accompanied the 8P3 facelift didn't last very long at all as the mirrors were huge and dubbed "dumbo" by many so Audi changed them very quickly to make them smaller.

Hi All, refering to the recent posts of mjcourtney and Vertigo1, I am a bit confused, since over here (Belgium), I can not get confirmation that the mirrors can auto-fold (with remote key) on the present model A3 8V Sportback (introduction 2012). This is what we are talking about here isn'it ? I am not sure what you refer to as "package", but here following options are available : 1. electric folding mirrors (6XE) 2. electric folding mirrors with tilt in reverse (6XK). Would there be a difference related to the auto-fold possibility ? Also, any thoughts on how this functionality interacts with the comfort key ? Many thanks for your feedback.

Both those options include the electrically folding mirrors. Whether they fold automatically is controlled via the MMI. If enabled then they fold when you lock the car and unfold when you start the ignition. Not sure how this works if you have the comfort key but presume it's much the same.

Thank you for your answer. I do not understand why I can not get this confirmed from the dealers. It is certainly not mentioned in the brochures (although an interesting feature). But not mentioning it in the brochures is also the case in the UK, I believe. Now, lets just hope there is no difference between UK and continent versions. Audi sometimes moves in mysterious ways....

As opposed to unfold with ignition on?
