2013 Audi S3

Yes the GTi certainly looks good.White works well with the dark rear glass and the gti styling. Wonder if those are standard wheels or option? I was at Audi dealer again today as i heard they had A3 Sportbacks in (if i had S3 it would be the sportback) aswell as looking at them outside - still wrapped awaiting customer preparation - I had 15 mins sat inside a Sport A3 3 dr just to take in the cabin details/quality. I was very impressed indeed. When I drove a new Golf GT in January the cabin was a very slight disappointment. Cannot wait to see inside a GTi and see what it feels like. PS I off to Geneva next friday but my ticket is for all day next saturday.

Nice one !

The alloys shown on the Golf GTi are the "optional" 19" rims ... don't they look fantastic though !!!
Will be interested to hear what you think of the GTi - inside & out and general opinion etc.
If the GTi can look THAT could good, it does make me wonder how good the Golf R will be, when that is released next year.

Yeah I have been inside a new shape A3 too (it was a sport spec) and also impressed with the interior.

Seeing as I am unlikely to see an S3 until September, according to my Dealer (that is when they advised me they would have a demo) your 1st hand feedback from Geneva will be invaluable.

So you got an idea what spec you are thinking of for youe S3 sportback yet ?

So you got an idea what spec you are thinking of for youe S3 sportback yet ?

Have got a reasonable idea, but until we learn exactly what base spec will include I am not certain. The couple of things I would definitely want are:

Phone Box, Technology pack, Advanced Key, Bang & Olufsen, Heated seats, Elec Lumbar, Comfort Pack, Privacy Glass, Parking system plus and rear camera, and adaptive cruise and as per the other thread - those stunning LED headlights!

What about your thoughts on equipment/options? I know you like those Sport seats.

NB: Also to mention when I popped in to dealer on friday to look at Sportback, salesman offered to take a £500 deposit and get me a place in the queue. He pretty much ruled out any deals on the price as its a brand new model and the A3 cars are so popular. He did concede they would be happy to do other things like a better px rate (although i prob not px'ing) or throw in things like lifeshine, service pack ? He said the deposit could be conditional - so if the pricing wasnt as expected or spec not what I thought i could cancel and have refund as they would use the booked slot anyway. He says the S3 sportback builds just go in amongst other sportbacks and they are already queued up till September so clearly autumn is realistc if ordered soon. I was sorely tempted I must say especially as it can be cancelled- but if no discount on car price I would need some sort of deal - (eg lifeshine, 5 yr warranty and 3 yr service plan thrown in) Anyway food for thought, but for the sake of a week, I will wait for Geneva and see S3 in the flesh and hopefully get inside it too.

Hmm, interesting.

I hadn't considered booking a place in the queue. Might drop in to my dealer during the week and see what they say.

Just been looking at www.bettercardeal.co.uk where I bought my current S3 through. They are offering about 8% off normal A3s with a similar amount off options.

For me, it will be a three door s-tronic:
Possibly Estoril blue,
Technology pack,
Comfort pack,
B&O,
LED lights,
Leather and Alcantara seats,
Reversible boot liner,
DAB,
Folding and dimming mirrors,
Tyre pressure monitor,
Hill hold,
Non smoking pack,
Interior light pack.

yes Splathead I quite liking that Estoril Blue Crystal effect too. At present unless other colours are revealed I would have that. Your list also reminds me - yes would want the folding mirrors, tyre monitor and interior light pack too.

.

Yes I have just checked this site out and as you say reasonable discounts there on the current A3 models. So you used this site before to buy your current S3? I presume you got a reasonable discount for that one? and was it a good smooth process?

Yes. I got 11% off my car. I ordered it at the end of January 2008 and picked it up at the start of July. I spoke to the owner of the site on the phone (just to make sure that he was real) and actually placed the order a few days later on the phone. About 20 minutes after I put the phone down, I had a call from Audi Wimbledon confirming the order and requesting Credit Card Payment for the deposit. Very, very easy. Amusingly, the day after I placed the order, my local dealer phoned to offer me a 7% discount (previously, they had refused to give me anything at all). It made me smile.

Thank you - That's good to know then - I would be happy to travel to collect a car, so this would be worth an enquiry.

You have to be prepared to play hard ball with the Dealers if they don't offer any discount.

Heard it all before that its a "new model" or its an "s" car so we can't discount !

Yes you can ... and if you want my order you will !

If you need to, walk away and see if the Dealer either:

a) Collars you before you walk out the door - and gives discount

or

b) Telephones you a day or so later and then offers a discount, if he sees he is losing a potential sale

They can give discounts on any cars, but they will try and make out they can't on new release cars or S or RS models.

Basically, any excuse in the book and some people are eagre to hand over cash / agree a deal and if the Salesman knows you are 100% sold on the car, again he will be less likely to give a discount, if he knows you are gonna place an order regardless.

We gotta be cooool customers :)

Wise words indeed Snake! My two previous new car purchase negotiations have gone well (VW), as soon as a printout has been introduced from an internet car broker/supplier the salesman has yielded immediately and improved the deal. It was encouraging to read Splatheads success on a previous S3 as this could be a good lever for a local dealer or just a cheaper deal overall.

However at the Dealer's I must try and curtail my enthusiasm and interest in the S3 !!

Hey mate,

You all set for Geneva on Saturday then ?

Hopefully you got your list of questions fully prepared now.

Looking forward to your pics and feedback on the cars.

Hey, if you get chance would appreciate some feedback on the Merc A45 AMG too mate if you get chance.
That's my wildcard car, if Audi don't play ball !!

Yes nearly ready! Will compile a few notes tmw from this thread! Camera on charge so hopefully get some shots too. I just hope I can get to sit inside the cars.

I will pop by the Merc stand too! I had considered the new A class but was not at all impressed when I drove the lower AMG one. The A45 AMG certainly makes interesting reading on paper though!

:)

Chers mate have a great time.

hope you can sit in them as interested to know how comfortable the S3, Golf and A45 are re seats.

Yep ... My dealer said full price & spec released and available to order in April with first deliveries September.

Quick update from Geneva!
Manically busy motor show but excellent. Spent fair amount of time looking at the only S3 (sportback) they had. Got inside it too several times. It was misano red with the option 18" wheels. Audi exclusive interior I think. LED headlights were special!
Very very impressed indeed :)

Lots of photos but I cannot upload them until I am home. Spoke to several Audi people including a so called "S3 Specialist" but I knew more than her from my own research! No English brochures. Got a french one but it's the same as the German one on the other thread. No audi cars on display were in Estoril Blue which was shame I was hoping to see that colour.

Snake - I also had good look at Golf GTi inside and out - vw staff much more knowledgeable about their car. I also got inside Merc A45 AMG.

S3 for me was the best.

Cheers mate appreciate the update and sounds like you having a great time at the show !

i popped into Audi and Merc dealer yesterday and saw a nicely specced s line a3 and an a class engineered by amg.

Both really nice cars and hard to pick between them so looking forward to your further feedback on both cars.

Oh my Audi dealer still saying September for S3 hitting the UK so if I order one it will be blind, but that is the same for the Merc too.

Looking forward to your pics and detailed thoughts when you get chance to post mate.

So out of the Golf (albeit GTi), Merc A45 AMG, and the Audi S3 ... totally unbiased you prefer the S3 - what separated it from the other two would you say ?

What were your feelings on the Merc A45 AMG as that car really does appeal to me too.

So, the S3 then ...

Tell us as much as you can on on your thoughts and especially the full LED lights - how did they look and did they really stand out ?

pictures.... pictures....... c'mon

Sorry for delay it always takes me a while to sort my photos. I have so many that instead of posting individually I have created several sets on my flickr account.

Hope you can view them ok, please confirm it works! The motor show was absolutely packed. I had to use my wide angle so people weren't infront of me. Although I have run lens correction software some shots may still be slightly distorted due to the very wide angle - but i am pretty pleased with most shots :)

S3 Shots Lots of shots here of the only S3 on display - sorry i got carried away.

Gti Shots 2 Gti's were on display with differing options - both a lovely Onyx white? - also a red GTD.

Merc AMG A45 This was in an interesting sort of matt metallic grey.

My other Motor Show shots this will grow as I sort more photos. initially it just has a Scuba Blue A3 G Tron as I wanted to see how the blue looked.

Fingers crossed these work!

Gosh Snake where to start! - yes S3 is my personal favourite and seeing it up close really brought into focus that it (for me) feels so "special" and absolute high quality. I just didnt get that feeling with the Golf. Not in any particular order here are my thoughts.

On the Golf it was mainly the inside that was no match for the S3. That plastic around the screen and air con controls and extends towards the dials - it is quite extensive and although it wasnt quite the gloss piano black that is in the GT - it is still sort of shiny even though they have a sort of carbon fibre type pattern. It just doesnt look the part to me. It shows lots of marks and dust. The main upper dash quality again just fell short of the S3. The vents in the golf above the hifi/nav screen - to my eyes just aren't stylish or attractive.

The Golf seats were good, on a par with the S3. The steering wheel was good too, and it had the cruise functions in the wheel not as a separate stalk like on the audi. This is a very slight niggle as I cannot see why audi havent incorporated the cruise into their wheel too? The dials on the golf just dont look special to me - is it me or could they be the same as any Golf?, whereas the S3 dials really do look good.

The Golf looks pretty good outside except for me around the back end. The Golf twin pipes only look ok from a certain angle and it just looks a bit awkward otherwise. I do like those 19" GTi option wheels. But those option alloys on the S3 are so good too. I also like the Gti headlights but they are not as good looking as those LED headlights on the S3. They really were eye catching indeed, I didnt see them in dipped headlight mode or main beam mode just as the DRLs and indicators. Very special.

As we have said before I know its not an absolutely fair comparison as the S3 is such a step up from the Golf, but for me as a current Golf owner who was so set on the new Golf Gti, until seeing the new S3 - it is just the route my car choice "process" has taken. Perhaps it is more about me wanting a change, and that may be another factor - perhaps the new Golf styling is just too similar to my current Golf and I need more of a change. Thats no criticism of VW at all I think its just more about me!

Finally the Mercedes - I drove an A Class AMG Sport in January. Clearly this is way short of the new AMG A45 - but I was not impressed at all. The ride just didnt feel good. The rear vision was shocking, it felt like being inside a postbox looking out! It felt small in the back and boot. The styling is certainly bold and in some ways is quite good it does grow on you a bit.
Having seen the AMG A45 at Geneva, it was an impressive car. The sort of matt metallic paint really looked special. It looked good although I am not so keen on the back end. Inside the seats were good. The hifi/nav screen is just stuck there, I guess I cannot fault this really as once the audi screen is up it also is just "there"- ! but for me the interior design just doesnt quite work - it is clearly a different design concept - carbon fibre effect, in your face vents (pardon the pun) that have a racy red piping around them. They felt imprecise and spongy when trying to alter them. Its quite a full on "racy" design. Steering wheel was good.

I know you said unbiased - really my views can only be my views! and are therefore personally biased to some degree or other. I have tried to look at things objectively but find that ultimately it does come back to where I am coming from and what I want.

The AMG - its clearly all about the extra power and the (racy) bold styling. That just doesnt do it for me. The S3 certainly is more subtle and discrete yet has a very special feel. The GTi is very good but not special like the S3.

Final couple of things I noted about S3.

The boot floor was not adjustable like the A3. I can only guess that the rear axle/diff take up some space that means there is only one level. This is shown in one of the photos with the sub woofer in the spare wheel well. I gues thats the price you pay for Quattro !

The spec sheet beside the show car (in the photos) shows the S Tronic as being standard? It might need a bit of google translation but the standard items are listed under "equipment de serie" and options under "options exposees".

Cheers mate - thanks for the superb pictures and excellent write up !

So we have a clear winner with the S3 then ... and I must confess in the red and option alloys exactly as photo's, I must say the car REALLY suits red and those wheels - it looks seriously cool !!!

Those LED lights also look the business don't they - I gotta have them :)

The S3 looks 'right' ... inside & out.

It looks a quality car and for sure more 'stylish' than the Merc AMG which is clearly going for a slightly more 'racey' look - both appeal but for different reasons.

So has the trip made up your mind on the Audi then and you ready to hit the order button next month when prices are confirmed ?

i would like to see and drive both the Audi & Merc before ordering but that won't be possible - coming from a TTS I know to a degree what to expect with the S3 including superb Dealer support in addition to a cracking car.

The one Merc dealer I did visit so far was terrible by comparison.

Love the S3 wheels! Although they'd look even better if they were 19's.

.

I have half day test drive on thursday with a Sportback - a 1.4 Sport - but its more about having more time in the car and checking out its equipment/options as clearly it wont be anything like the S3!

But yes my mind is pretty much made up now, but I really want to hear the final Uk spec and also I would feel I have got to work some sort of a deal! As you said before stand firm and be prepared walk away. Now I have seen it, I hope to use my knowledge of the Gti - as a potential contender - in any negotiation on an S3 to see if that will make them work a bit.

Gotta agree ... the above picture is stunning, as are many of the other shots you took.
A very VERY stylish car for sure and even makes my TTS feel bland, the new S3 is so fresh & modern.
My Dealer is on stand by to give me a call as soon as the official UK price is confirmed next month.
Then we will crunch some numbers and see what the price to change is like (the not so nice bit).

Car looks amazing; so glad I chose red in the end...

interesting to see the two light options against each other ....

Yes thats a good direct comparison. You may recall in an earlier post I recall saying I wasnt too fussed about the LED headlights, when it was thought they may be £1200.

But having learnt that (in europe at least) they are about a £670 option - and having seen the video and seen them up close, these are a must have for me now. They would add another "special" factor to the S3. :)

In trying to find some good images of the audi estoril blue crystal effect paint I found this youtube video which is also in a good HD resolution. The video shows an S5 in USA and it looks pretty darn good. Don't know if anyone else has seen it but though it was worth sharing. (Might be me but i dont think there is sound with this vid)

Damn .... I 'thought' I was set on solid red but seeing estorial blue in natural light like that I'm having a re-think !

Gotta say it looks stunning !!!

Audi blues are difficult to judge on photos/videos.

My current car is Mauritius blue and I love it. After seeing many pictures of of scuba blue I decided it was not for me. It appeared to be missing that deepness of Mauritius. Things changed yesterday. I was at the dealers to have the summer tires fitted and when they were done they parked my car out front right next to a scuba blue A1. This was the first time I had the change to compare colors directly and in day light. That scuba blue looked stunning and deep!

the estoril blue S3 in Audi Piccadilly was really stunning

Keep thinking about estoril blue now !
That S5 footage really does make it look a stunning colour.
That may be another £500 notes added to the bill (red was free) :)

No more news at the moment.

As much as I would like this project to move forward, frustratingly, until Audi officially release the price for the S3 I can't do anything more ... other than ponder over colour and options !

Come on Audi, get the details released. Let's hope it early April rather than end April.

Demand appears to high for the A3, so wonder what delivery time will be quoted for the S3 ?
Dealer said they are not expecting a demo till September, so it aint gonna be quick that is for sure and gonna be a LONG wait.

Yes, its like watching the kettle boil !

My local dealer last week told me it was early April (poss 3rd or 4th?) so hopefully just about a week to go for the pricing and full spec.

He also said no S3 Sportback demo cars until September but 3dr S3 demo could be June. (He had previously told me that demo S3 may be ready by May.)
