Jardo's 'Journey to quattro' - My Story...

The car has just done something REALLY weird.

I tightened up all the boost hoses, found a couple which were a little weak so replaced them.

Went out for a drive and got a couple of miles down the road, long enough for the car to get to 90. Put my foot down and it felt the same as it did before; not a very linear throttle and whilst it is smooth it is jumping up 10psi and needs a lot of throttle to go above 5psi.

Did two pulls, and thought I would video the third to show Prawn. Full throttle from 4K and it sounded like an SR20, screaming its tits off so loud I assumed the back box had seperated or fallen off. Let off after 2000rpm of this and it was still very boomy and noisy, and there was a very loud noise coming from the front of the car, it sounded like a screamer pipe.

Anywho.

Drove it on for a mile to the next roundabout and came to a stop, and it went quiet again. Pulled away like normal and the car was fine, perfectly linear boost delivery and driving really well. Unlike for the last week...Drove it home and all fine, the exhaust is a little blowy (it wasn't) and there was the usual "short run" amount of mayo in the filler cap.

So, something stuck in the actuator maybe? Sticky actuator? What shall I do?

What DV you running? Rubber seal missing?

Brand new genuine Bosch DV, didn't do anything strange before. I swapped it for the Kerscher one on Phils and it is the same.

Whenever I depress the throttle the TB clicks and runs a reset/adaption. I just video'd it because I noticed the clicking, and I was depressing the throttle not knowing it was adapting and it is making a really bad grinding noise every time I depress the throttle when it is trying to adapt.

Shagged TB?

will it run an adaption cycle on block 060 in basic settings?

Yep.

Joy of joys, PAS started ******* fluid out of the hard pipe to res' join this morning.

Jesus really does hate me.

Today is a good day.

Phil fitted the polybushed lower arms and the fully bushed dogbone.

Car feels epic now!

I readjusted the preload on the actuator; car is driving beautifully and all is great.

:)

Thanks Phil :)

Glad to hear mate, shame the rear bushs arnt castor ones though haha, sorry couldnt resist.

Is VVT a cold start feature?
I thought it was something else.

On ko3 based engines VVT is just used during cold start yes Scott.

On ko4 engines it's used when up to temp as well to optimise performance low down I believe, and recent developments have shown midrange gains from tuning the VVT change over point on VVT equipped engines

Ahh cool.

Thanks.

**** it, I just gooned the tits off it on the way home and realised Prawn is right.

Far too much time and effort has gone into it for me to sell it on. And besides I am never going to get anything as fast, well spec'd and generally awesome even if I did get 3k for it.

Looks like I just committed March's pay to rods :/

See jardo thats what friends are for. Well done nick for getting him to see sense.

Glad nobody talked welly out of selling bumble so easy :)

***... I got all excited for a bit there!

only joking glad your sticking with it mate ASN wouldn't be the same without you!

Not even going to attempt reading through this thread, mission lol. The car looks great though! How does launch control work in a manual car? I presume its manual... Were you on swdubs a while back? Recognise your name.

As you have an S3, launch control works a bit like this :)

****** hell, last time I saw you I think you had a Mk1 with a check roof and many lows and lights.

I was on SWDubs, the main man off there bought my last A3 and then went about telling everybody how I had ripped him off despite him paying less than the coilovers, front mount and S3 bumper were worth for the whole car with 9 months mot and 6 months tax...then he banned me for telling him is was moaning haha.

So you've got an S3 these days then? You're Salisbury way aren't you?

Yeah it's manual, very rare to see an auto 1.8t Sport. Basically it creates a second rev limiter at a lower rpm, but it only drops the rpm by 50 rather than the 200 it normally does. It works more in the way that an F1 cars launch control works than the conventional pops and bangs most people are used to seeing.

Using the speed sensors and clutch switch it creates a limiter, then once the clutch it released or a certain speed is reached you get full revs.

Wow! So do you floor it with the clutch down first then just take your foot off the clutch? Your S3 Loves to rev doesnt it! A lot more than mine does anyways.

Ooops didnt refresh the screen before posting!

I did have a mk1 yeah! A bare metal one. Really? No way! Who was that? I cant think of any of the mods that have had an a3.... Or do you mean it was one of the main members?
Nah im from Honiton way. Love the S3, nice putting my touch on it.
So when it hits the rev limiter the revs dont drop as low?
I dont get the second bit haha.

Basically :)

You fit rods first though, otherwise bits of your block end up in a different post code.

I think his name was Matt? His Mk2 is the one in the main photo on the forum.

You'll have to come down to one of the Plymouth meets, or SOS next month?

The rapid shot limiter is awesome, if you bounce yours off the limiter it goes "vroooom vrooom vroooom vrooooom" where mine goes "va va va va va va va va va" and rather than bouncing down 200rpm every time the revs are cut mine only drops 50rpm.

Oh yea I know matt. I wasn't aware he was having problems with it.
You go to the SOS meets do you? Went to the last one in my well old skool s3! Til we realised the police were there and my mates r32 skyline doesn't have much tread on the rear tyres (shocker), so we left pretty soon haha.

Yeah a long story, maybe best forgotten.

I didn't go last month because it was for some reason on a Friday not a Wednesday. I will be going next month for sure though and I have been to pretty much every other meet for the last couple of years.

Mine has a few extra mods to achieve this rev capability dude lol... rev limit is 7.8k currently :)

The launch control on mine is a little different to Jardo's setup... if you look at the video it hits a rev limiter and boost is non existent but then the bangs come in and builds boost... its a coded feature in the mapping... on some cars I have seen around a bar of boost, mine sits at 0.5bar currently but reckon I can tweak it up a bit in the mapping...

Well, I've been doing some research.

Rods and high comp pistons are next obviously to ensure continued enjoyment, but I am hugely considering trying an eBay special K04-001.

The specifications have been posted up on Vortex as
Inducer: 51.5mm
Exducer: 44mm
Tip height: 6.4mm
Blades: 11

Which would make the Tuning Parts Bay K04 unit slightly larger than an OE K04-001, and at £200 if it's **** then it's still a worthwhile investment whilst I get the K03s hybrided or sold for a K04.

Niki has seen 250bhp made easily without meth from a 001, and it is a straight bolt on with nothing extra needed.

It's hardly the most economical step up in terms of performance but once I have LCR Brembos fitted I think it will be the perfect balance at around the 255/300lbft mark. As well as only being £200 for an extra 10/15bhp.

So I need to tie up about a grand into the A3 over the next couple of months and then I have tried and tested another route. And had fun along the way...

:)

High comp pistons? in yours?

You've confused me there....

Yeah, Dani B has a set of AGU pistons that he wants 13p for so for the sake of it I will have the rods built up with a second set of pistons and have the rings fitted then Phil and I can swap them over in a weekend without waiting on having my old pins pressed and the pistons and rings connected to the rod.

Phil has an engine builder who can do those bits before hand to keep the swap as cheap as possible.

Flex hone the bores and swap them in. Simple as that.

Haha. That's one thing i don't like about the S3, its a bit boring, its quiet, and so planted. I loved my mk2 ABF, was so lairy.
Thats a very good offer! What if i turn up in a taxi off my head? lol

Then that makes two of us haha!

Thats one thing I love about the A3, its quiet and refined until 30% throttle and 10psi. From there up it is a lairy 200bh/ton hooligan.

Can't believe I was thinking about selling it haha.

You a3 guys slate s3 's for been boring, i really need to let you have ago in my s3, youd be surprised by how much of a asbo car it is, id dare say ots the most modified s3 in terms of handling going :).

If you're serious about getting rods, that's the time to swap the turbo out, as the head will be off and it'll be easy.

Yup, will all get done at once in April.

Unless you have got any other suggestions on turbo route?

*thanks PT.
