Good afternoon folks,

So i've had my 57 plate a3 170 quattro for just short of a month and I'm starting to regret buying it. Part of that is thinking I rushed into, as when looking back there are a few things I should of questioned the owner about when I looked at it (I was like a kid at xmas, what can I say ha ha)

The latest issue seems to be the clutch, or at least I think it's the clutch. As with all these things it is hard to describe but I will try my best. I have noticed a noise when I depress and release the clutch pedal, which it like a rattle/knocking noise, this noise is not there when the clutch is fully depressed or released, only at a certain point during pedal travel. It also varies how loud it is, sometimes its hardly noticeable but others its quite loud.

Also I can't decide if it's slipping, the rev gauage doesn't go up before it takes hold like other slipping clutches i've driven, but there does seem to be some sort of hesitation, especially in 1st and 2nd gear. It is going into an indy for a haldex service and brake fluid change, which I am very optimistically hoping will fix it (note, very optimistic ha ha).

Anyone got any advice or ideas? Hopefully one that doesn't cost a few hundred for a new clutch........ ha ha

Could be the DMF or clutch release bearing.

Don't worry bud, I thought it would be......like I said it's just my luck, replced the clutch and flywheel in my golf within a year of owning it!

I will have a word with the Indy when it is in, he seems like a decent guy who know his stuff. Obviously I would need to ask him for a quote, but is there generally a difference in price between the garage getting the parts and fitting, or sourcing the parts myself and just getting them to fit?

I don't see why there would be really?

Any good independent garage will get your parts at similar or sometimes better prices than you could,but there is nothing to stop you researching the prices so you know for sure what you should be paying.

Ye I'll do some research. When the flywheel went in my golf, I got a vw specialist to replace the clutch as well which came to £1000 roughly!

Hoping the Indy I'm taking it to can maybe better that by a few hundred! From reading things on here £650 including parts is reasonable?

I think that figure might be pushing it a bit,but no harm in trying as long as you're getting good quality parts.

Sounds like dual mass flywheel mate worth taking to a local garage and having them check it over whilst your there make sure you stay there as they will tell you lies and have you fork out money for no reason, but like others have said sounds like flywheel bud !

Another quick question, is it advised to change the clutch/flywheel ASAP when you know it's on the way? Obviously it's not going to get any better but it's a few weeks before my car is going into the garage and I still need to drive to work, but don't want to cause any other issues with the car until it can get looked at.

I'd be surprised if it's much cheaper,and get it fixed as soon as possible,as if the DMF lets go,it can be really messy.

Ive not come accross that problem with my car so i can tbe sure its deffo the dmf just going to have to take it to a trustworthy garage mate

Mine went not too long back, unluckily for me it shat itself whilst on the motorway under full load. Busted up my gearbox in the process. It wasnt a cheap repair, new clutch and flywheel, gearbox rebuild and load bearing, and labour came to £1800. Get it sorted asap.

Also, i didnt get a dmf. I went with a single mass flywheel kit, the clutch is heavier now but i prefer that. It feels like it can take the battering i give it from time to time. Smf kit will be alot cheaper overall. Plus dmfs are more prone to failure.

Ye well the indy that it's booked into seems pretty good and trustworthy so i'll have him look it over. If he does say it's the dmf and flywheel, I do have a mate who is a mechanic so could buy the parts and see if he will fit it with my help (i'll make the tea ha ha). Although with a garage there will be abit of a guarantee so could be the better option.

A very noticeable difference. But whereas the old clutch was super light and without much feel, this has way more feel so i dont mind the weight. Its heavy enough to make ur legs tired after a couple hours of driving

Hmm mine isn't super light at all, quite heavy. Would this be caused by the clutch and dmf on the way out?

Evening, sorry to thread hi-jack OP, but I've recently purchased an 06 Quattro 140-TDI A3, I'm getting a grinding noise when half way through clutch travel. I've uploaded a video to YouTube to show this:

Video was taking from cold start, I only noticed the sound when I moved the car to clean (It doesn't make a sound when engine is warm). This is my first Diesel car, so is this normal? or would I be also looking at a new clutch/flywheel?

Well that is a similar noise to what i'm hearing, although I don't think mine goes away when the engine is warm. However going by what i've been told by fellow members then I would there is a chance of clutch/flywheel, but then again I don't really know. I'll keep you updated as to what the indy says when he takes the car in

It's definitely not something you expect to do on an expensive car or at least at 37k like mine!

The noise is much more audible from cold start, I never got the engine up to 90 temp today, and the sound wasn't as loud as from cold. What ever it is, doesn't sound healthy! Will be interested to know what your indy garage says.
