New A3 sportback S-Line ride too firm & noisy

My new A3 is an sline with sport suspension. Even though its got a shorter wheelbase and larger wheels I find the ride to be as good as if not better than my old 8p SB. Its also much quieter inside.

As someone else pointed out, comparing an A3 to a 3 series isn't fair. Its like comparing an A1 to an A3. For me, the new 3 is a better driver's car than the A3 but to configure it to the same standard it costs much more.

From the brochure the Sportback wheel base is 2636mm and total length is 4310mm.

(The 3 dr A3 wheelbase is 2601mm and total length 4237mm).

In view of the discussion about the suspension set ups and rides can I ask if anyone has knowledge of the magnetic ride? My interest (as a potential S3 owner - which apparently will have magentic ride as an option) - is will this nicely soften the ride on one setting and revert it to the normal S3 feel on the other setting? Or would the suspension just get even firmer once activated?

Just wondered if there are people with actual experience of this option?

We often find it odd some people assume a bigger car is 'better' than a smaller car... I often run into people who think by choosing a smaller car it means we can't afford a bigger one, or have overlooked it.. why is it so hard to believe we prefer it! :) If we lived in an area where parking and road sizes / congestion weren't such a problem, maybe we might change our minds..

I'm with you 100% on this. I've gone from A4 down to A3, but considered A7, X6 among others. Some don't understand why I haven't bought the biggest car I could afford. The A3 is a perfect size and has all the tech I need. I don't have any issues with parking space at home or at work, but for 90% of the time, I'm in the car on my own.

Firstly, you're comparing the 8P A3 which has much harsher suspension than the new 8V. Secondly, you're comparing apples with oranges. The 3-series BMW is an entire class up from the A3 and 1-series and intended to compete with the A4. As such it's a larger car with a longer wheelbase which will always ride better than a shorter wheelbase car.

I disagree. We are comparing two cars. Yes they are meant to be in different 'classes' but, I don't really get that argument. The OP had test driven both cars and was trying to make a choice between the two.

For the argument on size I show below the difference between the new A3 sportback and the new 3 series touring

BMW Audi Diff (BMW over Audi)
Length 4624mm 4310mm + 314mm

Width (rear) 2031mm 1966mm + 65mm

Width (front) 1811mm 1785mm + 26mm

My point is that although the length is just over foot longer I don't really see any difference from the drivers seat where I sit most of the time in terms of space in the cockpit. So both cars are pretty similar in size and I would argue the extra 314mm length that the BMW has is for luggage space and perhaps in the rear seats where the occupants gain an extra few mm. However, look at these differences on a ruler in terms of where the driver sits in cockpit space and you'll see that a different class means what - somewhere between 26mm and 65mm?

I accept I drive both the old models that the OP has been looking at but, I just thought I'd share my views having lived with both cars. Don't get me wrong the Audi is a nice looking car both inside and out. But, the BMW is what they say - a drivers car. I do nearly 25,000 miles a year and doubt I will go back to an Audi has my main driver.

My view is that the OP is going for looks and gizmos over the driving experience and I can see why the Audi is going to win every time in these respects. This is why there are so many different makes of car on the road as people expect and what different things from their cars.

Finally, one lesson I have learnt from buying new cars in the past is that I would do all I could to avoid buying a new car and instead look at ex demos or cars under a year old. Why? Well my current car specs out at over £45k list - too much for me. Found an ex demo on via the BMW used car selector for less than £35k which after a bit of haggling meant that I 'saved' the best part of over 25% for taking a 'second hand' car with 7,000 miles and 2.5 years of warranty remaining. This is were I've found Audi to be quite canny in 'marketing' and to a certain extent restricting the supply of vehicles to try and maintain what I see as 'false' demand which means that cars less than one year old which are 'fashionable' or in demand seem to be not far from the price of a new car. We saw this when looking for a Q5 when first launched. Hence we now have the S3

BMW Audi Diff (BMW over Audi)
31.4cm longer
6.5cm wider

I don't really see any difference from the drivers seat where I sit most of the time in terms of space in the cockpit. So both cars are pretty similar in size and I would argue the extra 314mm length that the BMW has is for luggage space...

*sigh* pluves1, you're still missing the point..

We don't want a car that is big on the outside. We live in an area with small parking spaces, narrow roads, and congestion, and we have a small driveway.

I'm sorry but using the cockpit size as an argument the way you have, is the most ridiculous thing we ever heard.

''come on BMW, this cockpit feels small, so I'll just force you in!'' [hits other cars and walls and everything else in path]

Why is it so hard to believe that some people who can afford more just want/need a decent smaller car? We will be happy paying more for a golf or A3 than for a 3 series.

As I said we test drove the 8V. The thing with ride though is its all personal opinion but then that's what these forums are all about. Bantering around those opinions. Fair point though on the 3 series being a unfair comparison in regards to size but this was about ride comfort. Even on run flat tyres, the BMW rides better. On the basis of the S Line suspension set up, Audi have lost two long standing customers from our household.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to persuade you to buy a 3 series over an A3. All I'm saying is the size difference is minimal on width. Granted length is a foot longer. Personally, I regard my cars as being of similar size.

You've already made up your mind by the sounds of it with all the options you 'need'. This is where 'drivers' differ from those who like options and all the comforts. So you seem to be basing your car purchase primarily on the options you need - which is cool.

I agree with this, because the price of the A3 and Golf means they are far from being cheap cars. For high spec models, they are early £30k cars. It all comes back to personal opinion on what matters to you and where you want to spend your money....

Appreciate what ur saying audicruiser, but why not get the s line and deselect the sports suspension?

I currently have the A3 3door Sline spec, 18" alloys and full Sline suspension and love the car. My previous car was the A4 slain full spec and now fully believe the A3 is the better car, more spacious and overhaul driving position.
I think some guys are splitting hairs here between VW and Audi, purchase what you believe in, as for dash and interior looks the A3 is clean and free well set out. My Q5 has the extra toys but are not required in the A3, but in general a very good car. My sons want to get rid of there Golfs for A3 also

Lets face it, A3 sline has the better exterior and badge, golf GT has the better comfort and interior

interesting, the new golf has a 3.6cm longer wheelbase than the new a3. Does anyone know what the wheelbase length is of the new sportback?

The Golf is 2637mm. The A3 Sportback is 2636mm, so 1mm shorter whereas the A3 3-door is 2601 so 3.6cm shorter than the Golf as you say.

Looks like both the A3 and Golf 5-doors are the same length, within 1mm. For the first time, the A3 Sportback and 3-door have different wheelbases, obviously possible due to the new MQB platform.

You're comparing two cars in different classes. Firstly the BMW costs significantly more than the A3 for an equivalent spec. Secondly the BMW has a wheelbase a full 20cm longer than the A3 which will make any comparisons of ride comfort or harshness irrelevant as a longer wheelbase car has an inherent advantage here. It's unfair to compare a shorter wheelbase A3 to a longer wheelbase 3-series.
