Hi Guys,

Just had a guy come and code my MFSW and CC. CC went OK but had problems with the MFSW.

The buttons are coded OK but he said it was throwing an error with the steering wheel angle sensor and said he thinks I may have the wrong ECU. The parts I installed were as follows:

MFSW - 8R0 419 091 FTNA
Steering Wheel ECU - 8P0 953 549 F
Air Bag Harness - 8P0 971 589 AD

I purchased these parts as per the advise given on another thread:

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/181163-2006-audi-a3-s-line-2-0tdi-steering-wheel-upgrade.html

Can anyone confirm if I have the wrong part or another reason why he gets an error with the steering wheel angle sensor?

Thanks guys

If its on MK60 ESP then it just needs the steering taking from lock to lock to calibrate it, the VCDS procedure is only for the MK70.

You have the correct parts. Does the guy who came to code it know what he is doing ?

The steering basic settings need to be carried out after a change of ecu.

You should follow these instructions :- VW Golf (1K) Steering Assist - Ross-Tech Wiki

I thought I had the correct parts! Thanks for confirming.

He seemed to know his stuff, he does mobile car audio installations for a living and has used VCDS coding for a while on other jobs. I will see him tomorrow hopefully, so will chat with him about it and show him the link.

Could the ecu be faulty? They company I brought it from confirmed it was fully working when taken from the car but is 2nd hand still. I have 30 days warranty on it but I need to confirm if it is faulty or not.

I may take the unit out of the car and re-install just to make sure all is fitted ok.

How do I know if its an MK60 or 70, will the VCDS tell me/him that?

Sorry but complete knoob when it comes to VCDS.

Oh and I have tried lock to lock myself but no change and then drove for a bit and tried again but no go.

When he had the VCDS on the screen and tried the moving the steering wheel the angle would not change on the screen, if that helps?

Just follow the VCDS instructions in the link for basic settings. There will be no fault with the ECU.

I had the same problem when installing mfsw and had to go through the process. You may need to do it a couple of times but it will sort it in the end.

You will have a MK 70

Good luck and please report back.

Spoke to the guy that did my coding this morning, he said he did try to complete the basic settings on the steering but it would not let him, he tried a couple of times but it would not let him complete the set-up.

He now cannot come and look at my car again until Friday, which means driving around with very little power steering, my arms are gonna be pumped! lol

I will take the steering wheel of today and double check everything is still connected up ok and nothing has dislodged. Only have an hour for lunch, so won't take the ecu out as it was a b***h to get out last time but will remove the steering wheel, slip ring and steering angle sensor and re-seat them, just to make sure.

Is there ANYTHING else is could be?

Thanks for your help guys, appreciate it.

The process needs to be followed EXACTLY as set out. Pay particular attention to when to switch ignition/engine on and off.

If you take the slip ring off make sure it is taped first. Presumably your man did this ?

It can take a few goes so keep at it. I thought I had messed up when I got no power steering but, by carefully following the instructions TO THE LETTER and trying two or three times the steering just kicked back in.

Needless to say you need to be very careful driving without power steering !!!

EDIT : also check basic settings in brake system :- http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1J)_Brake_Electronics_(MK60)

When I retrofitted my MFSW, I had a bit of problems with the power steering,

Mine started working again when I went full left lock for 30 secs then full right for 30 secs, instead of just going from lock to lock straight away.

I only tried going lock to lock. I will try left lock 30secs then right lock 30 secs and what happens. I will report back shortly.

OK, tried locking each way for 30 secs but no change.

MikeFoster, I installed the parts myself and yes I did tape down the slip ring BUT it did move slightly when I removed the tape as I knocked it slightly, is that an issue if the slip rings moves?

Does anybody no anyone in the Hampshie area that can take a look at this for me and give me a second opinion.? I live in Liss, Hampshire but can also travel.

I have checked out the VCDS Map and messaged 4 people in my area but none of them have got back to me apart from one guy but he is 2 hours away and was hoping to find someone local to me.

I have done many if these upgrades, and as Mike said, the Ross tech procedure needs to be followed exactly for the Steering module to adapt to your ABS and to also recalibrate the steering.

Here is a bit of helpful advice, there are different ways people say and tell you to do to get your power steering back, but what I have found which now works 100% of the time for me is, in a quite road, drive the car no more than 10mph then proceed to do a three point turn, locking the wheel completely to the right, and then when reversing, lock completely to the left, then continue to drive the car back in a straight line.

This should solve your steering angle fault and have power steering back.

Do the 30 second lock each way whilst doing the basic settings with VCDS, it won't accept it after the basic settings have finished calibrating & as said follow it to the letter & it may need trying a few times

There won't be any thing wrong with hardware - it just needs the basic setting completed correctly

as advised, the problem is that the angle sensor needs to be reset. you need to resst the steering angel sensor and the ABS sensor. once this has been done follow those instuctions to the T and it should work. if he still doesnt manage it come to me and il sort it out. done so many of these

Tried your recommendation but still no change in the power steering.

I still have both the ESP Light (orange) and Steering Wheel light (orange) on my dashboard as well.

I'm not going to see him till Friday now, so will have another go at coding then unless I can find someone else near to me.

OK, I'm going to show the guy this thread and get him to read it over and then we can try coding again on Friday.

If he still can't manage it, then I will ask for a refund (50%) as I paid him to code both CC (which he has) and MFSW.

Are you available this weekend and if so, where about's are you located and what do you charge?

Thanks

Mate, don't waste your time keep trying, it will only work when VCDS is connected and logged in with security settings, but the ABS sensor has to be done at the same time.

Don't bother about the other bloke, as I doubt he still won't know what to do. Just get someone like Ash to it, or if your anywhere near Reading tomorrow evening, as I will be there doing a couple of cruise installs.

I've got to give him another try as he is very local to me and I have already paid him to code both the CC and MFSW. I also want to avoid driving far as I have very minimal power steering and tbh, its a little dangerous to drive if I have to swerve quickly!

I am not in or near to Reading tomorrow, unfortunately. I work from 9-5:30 Mon - Fri, only have the weekends free to get this done really, unless they can see me after normal working hours.

I'm sure Ash can do it as well, he seems to know his stuff but again, he is in Kent, miles and miles from me.

If this bloke STILL can't do it on Friday, then I will have no option!

Fair enough mate, but if you change your mind, I will be in Reading around 9 tomorrow evening.

Good luck with it mate, hope you get it sorted.
