Reesy's Big Turbo A3

Put it on.... I think there's some good potential with it....

I know, it's just a case of getting hold of the VVT unit, I'm also intrigued as to what difference it'll make.

Sorry to hear about the bits not turning up! Pics of the bumper?

I know mate, it's a pain in the ****, as is the master cylinder issue.. No pics of the bumper mate, it wasn't on for long as it looked good, but I couldn't have it.

Great work still lads. Nowhere got a master cylinder in stock that you can get this morning?

No real point mate, apart from the fact it's Sunday, so a rest day, the car wouldn't be good to go even if the master cylinder was fixed so there is no real rush

Hoping to get a clutch pedal back, Ben changed the master cylinder.

Pic shows the arrangement in bits and the start of a massive puddle of fluid that the car was ******* out. Changed it, re-fitted and pumped the pedal and still the clutch fluid was squirting out.

Ben reckoned it was this:

One of the bits of rubber had relocated itself. Put it back in the right position, still no decent pedal. Replaced this and the part that Audi simply call 'Tube' ( pipe with a circlular piece that attaches to the bulkhead) and I now have a clutch pedal again :o.k:

The 90 degree joiner arrives today. Downpipe bits, tip and dv silicone arrive tomorrow.

looking good mate! can't wait to see the results when it's finally mapped :)

Cheers mate, nor can I as long as I beat your BHP figure :arco:

Jardo mode off. I'm looking forward to driving it again, it had been getting slower and slower so hopefully this will bring it back up to scratch.

I ordered these yesterday at 2pm, they arrived this morning. Can't beat that for efficiency.

Reesy - you seem to be colour coding with the denim beast today! :whistle2:

Was it that valve i was on about?

Think it was that bit I posted a pic of above mate, but the pipework that includes this bit was also changed.

Thanks Jay. I miss it so I am forever in blue jeans until it drives again. :whistle2:

Or more likely I wear jeans to work. :beerchug:

Wednesday night:

got out of work late and Ben had been a bit of a champ and pretty much finished the downpipe, minus the final test fit..

It's not the easiest to get in and out and once the dogbone was tightened, the downpipe sat wedged the heat shielding, meaning it needed to be taken back out, cut and the bend modified. It was all going so well, until the mig ran out of wire and the gap is too great for the tig. Sad times.
tip and DV setup was sorted, as was the 90degree clip.

Spot the difference:

i shall finally have the car back tomorrow night.

Great process Chris. Did your VVT arrive in the end?

Cheers.

VVT should be available from Sunday, not sure when it'll get fitted though. Might pop up and see if Ben has time to fit it then as I know Dan is keen to see the benefits of it

Great progress fella, be interesting to see hows it goes. What figures are you aiming for?

My aim is a maf maxxer. Anything more then that and I'm happy.

Driveshaft and tip need to be fitted this morning, but apart from that its good to go. It starts and sounds just as it did before which is a good base to work from.

A fair bit of modifying took place in order to refit the brake servo pipe as someone has put a downpipe in the way, but with some chopping and changing and a bit of plastic welding, it fits. Downpipe was its usual fun self, but the old system fitted straight to it which was a bonus, although it seems to sit a bit low so I'll see how much scraping i hear over speedbumps and see if some tweaks need to be made. I now have a VVT unit as well, but won't be getting it fitted straight away as I want to see what the manifold does first, then see if there is a difference when the vvtech kicks in.

Dont say that! lol. Newbs will think it does kick...Used to get people on Yaris forum saying yeah my car has vvti i can really feel it kicking in or when is the cross over point...is it like vtec? FACEPALM

Go big turbo they said, it'll be fun they said.

Car went back together yesterday, started it up and it sounded a bit rough but after a few seconds was all good. Left it running for a while and it was fine, no leaks anywhere or anything like that. Decided to let Ben have the first drive (sure he secretly likes the car) just in case there was any issues, he came back in and said the downpipe was 'knocking its tits off'

Engine was moved as far to the n/s as it could be and we set off to the shop for snacks. Car is noticeably quicker then it was before which is good, but the issues aren't sorted yet unfortunately. Basically all the time there is boost, the brakes don't work as they should. As soon as the car is off boost they work again. Going to try and sort this today, diagnosis was that it could be a faulty one way valve.

Know the feeling Reesy... the path to true power is a fecking rocky one.... :(

Mine still fights me for it... the beatch!

<tuffty/>

not so much faulty as installed wrong way round perhaps ?
worth checking

Definitely the right way round. Must be faulty as its allowing boost and vacuum to pass through it, not ideal for a one way valve! Lol

Not going to argue with that one. One things leads to another, seems like I'll have about 90% new parts on the car by the time it's done.

Good to hear the progress, sorry to hear that its not moving forward as planned. I am sure you are close fella.

^The reason why I still don't have a car.

This had melted to the downpipe. First thought was to get a metal one made up, but it'll still knock so that's not ideal, so possibly going to relocate the hole to get it further away from the downpipe and bung up the current one.

Should be fun.

Damn! All good fun this modifying lark...

K04 was a winner, the Garrett setup is a bit more complicated :(

Should have stayed OEM lol. Great find, hopefully an easy fix?

OEM for me is a K03s.

I'd have more fun cycling everywhere.

I didn't find it, I was still on the way from work, car was in and back out before I got there. Replacing it would be an easy fix, but it needs relocating.

Heatshielding..... the worlds most underestimated mod... :)

<tuffty/>

Would have helped, but it would have gone anyway, this was stuck to the downpipe where it had melted.
Relocation, relocation, relocation is the answer.

Wtf is it?

It's the brake servo take off fitting Karl, I'm guessing if it was melted to the downpipe Chris would have almost no servo assistance, so scary brakes!

Whilst I realise this comment will upset certain forum users, it is so true!

I wasn't driving it at the time it went wrong, but the words were 'Oh god no brakes, Oh god' whilst some heavy stamping was taking place. I can imagine it'd be like driving an original mini, but 2+ times heavier with 5+ times more power.

In the interests of making my afternoon a little bit more entertaining, I'll text Jardo now and point him this way :)

So gsf pattern clutch master cylinders are a crock of ****. It's broken after about 4 miles. Exploded and nearly set the car in fire.. This happened last night and so I still don't have the car.

The surgery to relocate the servo pipe was a success so I'll post some pics.

As you were:

so gsf are sending out an LUK one to replace this piece of ****.. Buy cheap, buy twice. Or in this case get the cheap upgraded to a genuine one as their one is crap.

Day 14. My car is back on the road. :arco:

Well, sort of..

Ben sorted out the clutch master cylinder again I took it out for a drive.. Unfortunately, very heavy fog and no fuel meant that I had to drive it very sensibly to the petrol station. I was majorly relieved when I arrived, as this is the site I was looking at:

2974CC65-4DB1-47B9-8497-B88643A639FF-837-000000C0F045E6B1_zpsb16572f7.jpg

A lot of smoke was coming out the exhaust, but it was only moisture so I wasn't too worried. There was a bit of smoke coming from under the bonnet as I walked out the garage, so I quickly moved it away from the petrol pumps and had a look. No issues that could be seen, so I left the garage and made my way back.

Not sure if it's because I haven't driven it for a while, but it seems louder then it was which isn't ideal..Also pretty sure the biting point of the clutch has changed, or I've forgotten how to drive and I ended up over revving a bit after a few of the changes.

Anyway, car is still at Ben's to fit some necessary heatshielding, and some tiger sealed engine mounts as mine are f***ed. The gearbox one especially has seen better days, and until they are changed we won't know how badly the downpipe is 'knocking it's tits off'.

Plan was to do some more tonight, but ended up spending most of the day standing around a dyno with Prawn and Ben, which made a change from trying to sort something on my car. I'm sure he'll be updating his thread later.

The few tweaks will be done on Monday, as well as some new numberplates. Then I've got a new lower section to fit to my front bumper, and the denim will almost be presentable again.
