Hello again peeps

Just bagged a 1998 TDi 110 Quattro

it's damaged on the front

It's my first B5 project.. but probably my 6th Audi Project

I have the option of putting it back to standard (pre-facelift) or upgrading to facelift or even go as far as a S4 front end

Is it straight forward to upgrade to facelift? Whats required?

Please jump in and give some guidance

I need to source the front end:

Front bumper
Bonnet
Rad Pack
Front Panel with Inner Bumper
Pair headlights
OS Front wing
Drivers door

Budgets are tight so if you know anyone breaking a Red B5 that will help mucho

There was a guy on eBay breaking a facelift ref saloon. Could maybe get a couple of parts off him.

I would definitely like to facelift it

which parts are different?

are the front wings different?

From what the guys on here have told me regarding FL goodies on a PFL car personally I'd start with headlights, you can get a good condition set for around £60-80 or if your lucky even cheaper! The only minor mod to get the lights to fit is trimming some metal back on the inside of the PFL front wing, there is a good DIY guide floating on here I think? Front bumper, PFL models didn't have front fogs fitted only FL models, again for about £50 you can source a FL front bumper complete with fogs etc. FL wiper arms is a staright forward and relatively easy mod, purely cosmetics, they just look better than PFL. RS4 look front grill, something I haven't tried yet but for £35 off eBay worth a try? If you go down the road of S4/RS4 OEM parts then as to be expected they do command a premium as not many are broken for spares and when they are parts don't hang about!

Hope this helps?

best off checking the SRS forum, a lot better chance of finding S4 bits on there. I'm waiting on a bumper coming off a car one of the lads is breaking because I smashed into a wall a fortnight ago :'(

Whats the going rate for an s4 bumper?

so lads, I have found a breaker willing to give me the front end parts I need for £300 - but they're a different colour and will need painting

anyway, something major has come up that I could do with considering

A mate of mine has a 1999 1,8TQS and is selling up

his engine is ok but has done over 200k miles.
His car has all the goodies of the TQS

Now, I can buy it off him and use his parts on my car

but we were sitting and wondering if it's straight forward to scrap his drive train and drop my diesel drive train into his car

has this ever been done? is it straight forward or messy?

You will need to transfer everything from one car to the other- a lot of work if you ask me ! Gearbox, rear diff, fuel tank, dash, engine wiring loom, etc. Will be almost straight swap as you have both cars complete but it will be a modified 1.8T quattro which most insurers won't touch !

Fuel tank? Really? It's a petrol fuel tank so will be nice and clean lol

They're both quattros, but do the diesel and petrol have different setups for the rear wheels?

And if I swap the goodies from the 1.8T to the 1.9tdi

will the white clocks swap over?

are the front panel and radiator the same?

The seats will definitely be swapped but seeing as the driver seat will be worn, has anyone swapped the front seats around?

yes after some deliberation and discussion with my mechanics, it's not economically feasible to swap the diesel running gear into the 1.8T.. adamss24 (above) was right

so sticking with original plan.. I have actually found a cheap 1.8TQS in the right colour - so will be swapping the parts onto the diesel and taking all the goodies off before scrapping it

The 1.8T is a good running engine which has had a fair bit of work including new cambelt, new turbo and new head gasket (as precaution) so will be up for sale in a few weeks - I will add it to the classifieds soon

I will want to swap the clocks - are they compatible? If not, then I take it they need opening to get the white dials out? any write ups?

and the half leather TQS seats are a given. But I want to fit the passenger seat as the driver seat (less worn) - anybody done this?

well they're petrol clocks for a start....

If the TQS clocks have an analog clock, then they might work, you'll have to try them and see, might need recoding to diesel engine.

If the TQS clocks have a digital clock, then they wont work without major rewiring.

The seats wont fit on the other side either, the mounts are asymmetrical.

Not sure I follow what you mean about analog or digital clocks?

And the seats.. I'm also an s2000 nut.. Our drivers bolsters always get smashed so many people actually swap their seat rails and put the worn seat on the passenger resulting in a rarely used seat as the drivers seat

see here: Seat cushions swapped and bolster repaired - S2KI Honda S2000 Forums

just wondered if anyone has done a similar thing on the b5

Here is my Project '98 TDI Q :

and here is my donor 2000W 1.8TQS. I just drove it 230 miles home! Drove fine and did the journey in £45 of petrol. Lovely half leather interior with white clocks and additional extras.

Now you will understand why I was thinking of swapping engines and keeping the TQS.

OK So... I am thinking to swap over ALL the facelift bits. Some help needed:

I noticed the door handles are different so this probably means full door swap? or is it just the handles?

The door trims are fatter on the facelift.. can these be simply swapped over?

The interior climate control and console looks different.. are these straight forward swaps? or different plugs?

Is there any difference in the rear bumper?

what else is different/better?

I need to have an idea what I can get back from breaking my donor car

How much can I sell the TQS engine and gearbox for? 1.8T (180bhp) with 150k miles.. last owner was a mechanic and maintained it fully. Recent cambelt and clutch. It's running well at the moment so any prospective buyer can hear it running before purchase.

Do people sell the Quattro box separately? (ie Haldex?) or is it sold complete with engine and box? Is it the same part as my TDiQ? I may hold onto it for spares if so.

My TDiQ interior will be up for sale. Much nicer than the SE interior. What's it worth?

Complete Airbag kit with Steering Wheel?

what else is there of value?

I'm keeping the seats, clocks, centre console, rear FL lights. The Complete front end is going on the diesel. And I might be keeping the doors - but the PFL doors will be available.

Swap the whole doors over, as that way you get the nicer facelift handles and the facelift trims.

Climate is a straight swap, you do need to add one wire though for illumination.

Headlining is different too.

The clock (time) on the dash cluster comes in two types, analog and digital. Your 98 car will have an analog clock. The TQS might have either. If its analog, then it will plug in to your car just fine, you'll need to see about coding it for the diesel engine though. If its digital its a big wiring job to swap it.

Engines go for 300-500quid, the gearbox contains the centre diff, its not seperate, but i'd probably sell the box seperate to the engine. Gearing will be different to your TDi box.

You'll get about 50quid for the steering wheel with airbag.

Evertyhings worth money, it just depends how far your prepared to strip it down.

Oh and as for the seats, if you actually take them out the car, you'll see why its not easy to swap them side to side.

The driver seat is not as bad as I thought so that's not an issue any longer.

However the electric lumbar doesn't work. I'm suspecting a fuse. But I will fix that when the seats are swapped.

Both instrument panels have the analog clock. And look pretty much the same. Ones black, one white. Will have to cross that bridge when I come to it. Also planning on replacing the dead pixel screen in the instrument panel when they're out. Who supplies the best replacement part?

Which climate control is superior? PFL or FL? Any write up on the additional wire?

Aragorn

just listed my engine and box in the classified & ebay as a complete item

What's my TQS gearbox code? how much is that worth? I am not after mega money - just trying to cover my costs

if you know of anyone interested please give them a nudge.. the engine can be tested running before removal

rear diff perhaps 50-100, gearbox anything between 100-300. Breakers tend to list them on ebay for £300 or so, but IMO thats overpriced.

ok well im well on way with this project

but we have hit a horrible snag

the rear doors

on the 98 tdi they were non-electric

on the 00 TQS they are electric

how do I get the electrics working on the rear doors? :(
