Hi all ,
have a 03 a4 avant 2.5 tdi quattro with 80000 on the clock which keeps going into limp mode (sounds like a tractor esp light on). Light goes out sometimes when driving and also after being switched off and then left for a couple of mins..Can seem to coast about for a few miles before it goes back into limp.

Fault codes read 00550 017 sporadic fault. Any ideas of what i can check ,guys at the garage say the pump could be stuffed .

cheers Jon

Fuel pumps errors can be an issue on the 2.5's. Most people source a refurb unit if it comes to it.

Up date on this... do not let wombats loose on your car "my brother is a vag expert blah blah " After vag test came back with its dirty fuel or stuffed pump had tank drained and new filter. Still no change so started looking for a pump and got some free advice given by diesel bob ("check timing fella computer test not accurate enough, timing needs to be checked properly.Someone has to get their hands dirty ") Found a small local independent chap who has had plenty of dealings with the 2.5 tdi .Timing checked ,garage who done the cambelt used tipex to mark the pullies !!! A4 now runs as sweet as a nut getting nearly 40mpg....Too many people will take your hard earned cash without a second thought so be careful

Glad you got it sorted and it was a 'minor' issue. Definitely worth taking your motor to someone you can trust and who knows what they're doing, too many cowboys out there!

Nice to hear the 2.5tdi is back to normal jonba. Your quite right Az there are a lot of cowboys out there and it is harder to find someone who knows the v6 well as there aren't so many 2.5tdi's about.

I cant believe some "mechanics" think its ok to still use the old tipex on the cams method for the timing!!

40MPG from a .5 quattro? If i had known this was possible i would not have bought the 1.9
Glad to see you finally have it running well now, not good when muppets give you the run around with crap workmanship

Don't be too despondant, it's very much dependant on road type. I do permanent A/B roads and get 33mpg, if I drive like miss daisy then I get 37...
