Hi Guys,

Recently purchased an Audi A3 2006 2.0TDi Quattro S-Line 3 Door and I am in the process of upgrading a few bits and bobs. I am looking at getting a MFSW from a 2009 Audi A3 (PART NUMBER: 8R0 419 091 FTNA) but I am not sure if the Multi-Function part of the steering wheel will be compatible with my car (car currently has a non-MF steering wheel). I read on some forums you need the 'highline' ECU version for the MF's to work, is this correct? How do I know if I have the highline version or not? Also, the new wheel does not come with an airbag but from my understanding, I can use my current airbag, true?

A few details of my car, I have DIS, RNS-E Head Unit (Upgrade from Symphony 2 Unit), Non-multi-function S-Line 3 spoke steering wheel, 2006 registered vehicle, No cruise control (would like to add it though).

Please let me know if you need any further details from my car to better answer my questions.

You're correct, you'll need a highline steering ECU for the MFSW to work. You'll probably have a midline ECU but best way to check is to do a scan with VCDS or take the wheel off and look manually.

I've just fitted the same MFSW to my 57 plate and my airbag and slipring were fine for the new wheel, so think you should be ok. Hopefully someone confirm 100% though.

And if you're fitting the MFSW yourself, you may as well fit cruise at the same time whilst the wheel's off.

So you have fitted the same wheel to your car, how did it go, any issues or anything I should look out for when installing mine? I am a little worried about the airbag, don't want it going off in my face!

I will take of my current wheel and see which ECU I have, will is state 'midline' or 'highline' or do I need to look for a certain part number relating to 'highline' versions?

If I have the 'highline' ECU, will that not involve any coding to use the MFSW buttons? (coding recquired if 'midline' version?)

Oh and I don't have the Cruise control unit yet, hopefully in a months time or so, when I have saved the penny's!
 
I had no problems really, other than getting the spline bit undone as it was on ****** tight. I followed this guide http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/111696-cruise-control-retrofit-guide.html. Before you start messing about with the connectors on the back of the airbag, the battery is disconnected so you don't have to worry about it going off.

It won't state highline on the ECU, you'll need to look for a part number. The number you want to see is 8P0 953 549 F, not one beginning with 1K0. Although, if you car is DSG it will probably have it.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. A MFSW just won't work with a midline ECU, whether it's coded or not, you need a highline ECU. It then needs to be coded which is pretty easy tbh.

You'll also need a new airbag wiring harness for the MFSW, part number 8P0 971 589 AD (or 8P0 971 589 AB) can't remember which but it's around £41.

thats the highline module.
If your car is a dsg then it already has it, slim chances of it already being there in a manual car

you may as well put in cruise at the same time as the MFSW.

Are you sure that will fit my car as it states 2008+ and my car is a 2006 model.

My car is a manual, so most likely doesn't but will double check anyhoo.

I think I will fit it when I get the Cruise Control kit, seems like the logical thing to do.

yes it will fit your car, its listed wrong.

as you can see leeds2592 has said that same part number as i have, do a search on the forum for that part number and you will see that this is the only module for MFSW to work on cars before 2009, after that they changed to a steering module with the part number ending in K

Is that part number definitely correct, I found this on eBay with a very similar part number (see images for part number as description is incorrect)

If not, do you know where else I can get one from?

Oh, OK thanks for the heads up. I will keep hunting then!

Any idea where I might be able to get my hands on a second hand one, other than eBay?
 
Easiest just to get a brand new one from Audi like I did.

I'll confirm whether its AD or AB when I get home, just at work at the moment.

Probably would be easier but trying to keep costs down as much as possible, any idea what Audi charge for it, knowing Audi, EXPENSIVE!
 
Just checked mine an its 8P0 971 589 AD you want, cost £41 from Audi.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to say many thanks for the advise/info above for my steering wheel upgrade.

Installed the new MFSW and Cruise Control on the weekend and all went very well. The guides I used on this site were brilliant and helped hugely. Easy to follow and experts on call in the forums if you get stuck.

Just a small note for anyone else attempting this, when I did mine, I had to replace the steering ecu and subsequently after the install I had very little power steering input, no esp and no abs untill I get them coded (tonight), just a heads up guys. You may want to have coder ready and waiting when you have done the install.

If anybody is about to complete either install, PM if you need help or advice.
