With regards my last post a week ago, I took my car in on Monday to have my brakes fixed. Typically as per Murphy's Law, both on Sunday when I drove it to Sheffield Meadowhall Retail Park for the Yorkshire/Humberside Group meet. Then on Monday when I drove to my dealership my brakes didn't make any noise. :banghead:
Audi drilled some holes in the brake discs and also sprayed them with some solution, which they had the car for the whole day. Now I gave them 45bvtc's fix and pointed out this does work as has been working for three other people, although I do understand if the mechanic still wants to try Hull Audi's fix, but if he could look at the fix I provided and consider using it. I also said that Audi Customer Services would contact me 2x days later & if I still had issues I would request for this fix to be tried as it has already be offered foc.

I took my car for a two hour test drive on the Tuesday but could I recreate the brake squeal.... Could I B@ll&*ks!
The last time it was definitely noticed was when going down my short drive, so I tried various ways to get it squeal again inc. excessive braking, driving forwards and backwards and braking and also braking at the last minute, but to no avail. As 45bvtc mentioned earlier the damp conditions are possibly masking the fault.

So when Audi Customer Services rang on Wednesday, we came to the conclusion to defer my case - put it on hold until next Tuesday to give the car a bit more chance to bed in. So to conclude I'm not 100% sure it's fixed but until the weather improves, then I think the results for me are inconclusive as the noise didn't seem to be there before the fix. A bit like going to the doctor with an ailment for it to seem to have cleared up when you visit the doctor.

Did the tech show where he drilled the holes in the brake discs? Seems strange he'd do that???? I would be questioning that if the that was my car....

Copy of letter received from Audi after road test last week, omitted car details, chassis number etc. but you all know it's mine.
Just to reiterate the document below, be patient and hang on in there; the fix is very likely 1st quarter 2013.........

That's really great and I'm sure/convinced Audi are trying (as per HullRS3's report).

However, surely the brake squeal issue with the RS3 is from 5 to 0mph (and NOT 0 to 20mph)?

Is this where Audi/Brembo are getting confused/mistaken, or are they trying a braking procedure that us mere mortals are not aware of: and YES, I do occasionally (ok, maybe more often than occasionally) use LEFT-foot braking with my RS3.

It really does pi##! me off if the 'Audi Technicians' can't report the problem correctly i.e., how does that translate into Italian?

I'll lay my money down NOW!

An Audi Technician DID NOT drill the brake disc!

I had to laugh at that.

Think maybe the 5mm holes were drilled/cleaned out??

Sticks - how's the car feel now? Wind noise? Cheers Mate.

Never mind squeal, what are you guys doing about the warping and judder?

word is the crappy discs on our cars will be changed to a different manufacturer, as soon as left over zimmerman stock is used up. Last I hear it was around 20k sets of those one sided discs. Whether the ones being made by a different manufacturer will be one sided or not also, I do not know. But I think audi are doing this due to the amounts of warranty claims and bad press?

One sided as in they are nearside/offside specific? Are you saying that may be the fix? As in new discs? It thought it was generally accepted its the 4 pots on the back of the pads making the noise? Thanks for the info :)

The discs arent in the fix, but its a major flaw in that one side always gets alot hotter than the other. Im running 8 pots and they still squeal at times but it doesnt bother me. They do have copper grease fitted on the back of the pads.

IMO the official "fix" wont solve this.

Hi poverty you running the 8 pot supplied by dave brown , i,m sure the new loba uprated rotors with new pads should sort out the brake squeal?

Im still on stock rotors, will upgrade to the daveb disc setup once the car is back on the road.

I believe people with the AP discs still get squeal, but the majority of people who run those discs also run aggressive motorsport biased pads.

There might be one or two guys over on vagoc who are running more everyday pads in a bid to quieten things down, but I cant remember off the top of my head how successful they where.

I will find out tomorrow if there is a fix on the cards ,always good to get new pads rotors and disks ,but i,m not holding my breath ,if this doesn't get sorted i will nip down and see dave, love your new turbo by the way ;)

Just to take the heat off the brake issue ,hears povertys turbo;)

Its something else that turbo ,must be good for over 600bhp..:)

Never mind squeal, what are you guys doing about the warping and judder?

I gather you mean pad deposition on the discs causing judder rather than warping? Curiously I haven't had the issue on the 3's discs like I did on the 4 and then that was cured with a different set of pads with harder construction. Very hard to warp discs unless you are doing some serious track time and not letting them cool properly.

If I do get this I'll be changing pads and perhaps also going to the Loba front disc set up.

Never mind squeal, what are you guys doing about the warping and judder?

CAUSED in my view with the brake pads being fast/seized in the caliper and therefore unable to move AWAY from the brake disc.

NOT ALL cars suffer with any of these problems - mine was brake squeal only!

However, JonnyG and 8PARSY will support me when I say they were both amazed when I had to 'knock' (with some force) the brake pads out of the brake calipers on their cars...

And since lubrication/addition of self-adhesive anti-squeal shims have been 'quiet', I should add.

I do believe that those cars suffering brake squeal and/or brake disc distortion and/or vibration (caused by the heat soak from a fast/seized brake pad) will have fast/seized brake pads in the caliper.

Where the brake pad is relatively loose in the caliper then none of the above will occur.

That's what I think anyway - Audi UK (Sanderson et al) please note - and I've now solved a few...

Having said that again, what do think 'poverty'.

Audi UK/Brembo haven't come up with a 'fix' that works for 12-hours yet!

And Audi UK/Brembo are the erm... experts?

SEARCH on-line and you will find that both Audi and Brembo, or Brembo and Audi even, have worldwide 'form' when it comes to brake-squeal (not so much brake disc distortion, however).

MY brakes chattered and f'kin squealed "poverty". We had to belt 'em out. Thanks Audi.

Local dealer yout' said they all do that mate.

Now quiet with 45bvtc's 'fix'.

Thanks Audi, not.

Nope, & that was definitely the STORY they told me. Car was already outside for me to collect. This was similar story I got when I took the car in before Xmas.
Well, today is exactly 2 weeks since I closed my call with customer services - I rang Customer Services this afternoon as the squeal returned. I noticed it last night when slowing down approaching my driveway, then this morning approaching the traffic lights to the Park and Ride I use for work. Here is my Customer Ref AU-2013/01-032521...

C.S. are ringing my dealers tomorrow to arrange for my car to be taken in again, then when it is in and assessed Audi will take it from there. I guess I will need to find out what the flock Hull Audi fobbed me off with re: the repair and this alleged drilled holes. Also, will again push the issue that I want 45bvtc fix applied. If they refuse then speak to Lancaster or Carlisle and see if they can do it for me as I am up that way this weekend in Cumbria.

How come Preston Audi contacted you ?

Ive registered my brake fault there months ago and no one has been ***** to even keep me appraised! I think i'll be popping in this morning to have a chat about this and tell them if its not fixed they are getting the car back...... Its pathetic this now!

ok, so WTF did Hull Audi do with my RS3 for a whole day? Surely it doesn't take a day to spray some solution on the discs?

Sorry, not getting ****** at you guys, just with Audi!

I WILL CONFIRM (again) that my brakes remain 100% quiet!

And I've even tried to get them to squeal...

I mean, 250-miles around those fabulous Welsh roads last Monday (on bone-DRY roads i.e., the worst conditions for brake-squeal) and all we could hear was the sheep 'baa-baaing', the water-falls 'falling', and a 2.5litre 5-pot roaring!!!

Note: I still have faith that Audi will deliver on this issue (maybe Brembo already have?) but if only as a temporary solution - and mine's been temporary for 12-months now - IWILL happily help and/or assist anyone with this problem e.g., I will:

(a) Send you a set of instructions so that you or your local independent garage can apply my 'fix', or

(b) Offer to apply the 'fix' here in my own garage (providing it's not too cold).

This really is the BEST I can offer you guys other than my assurance that my 'fix' will resolve this annoyance - as it already has for others...

Take a quick pic of one of your discs and post up here?
Hope you get it sorted..

I did not speak to our dealers I complained straight to Audi UK by slagging them off on their FB page for the way they have been handling this issue, they contacted me straight away and they booked my car in (at Preston Audi) for what turned out to be a temp. fix, but the problem returned after two days and only 50 mls done.
Complained again for the useless fix and the waste of time and so they rang me, full of apologies and after offering some good will gesture :yes: they assured me that the proper fix is going to be out sometime in march though, let`s wait and see..

PS: not seen you on forums for a bit, have you done anything else to your car?

Fella try asking to speak to the Techie that worked on your car, or ask to speak to the Engine driver and not the oily rag...:angrymod: ie the main man at the dealership..:sos:

Well just heard from Customer Services. Hull Audi do not want my car in until Audi release the "Official" fix, and have no other fix, and are refusing to apply the Copper Seal fix. C.S. are giving me one option....
1) Wait until the "Official Fix" comes out from the factory and have this applied
2) If this does not work, then they will work with me to try and get an Audi dealership to apply the Copper Seal when I find out what it does and which dealships have applied, despite me saying countless times Lancaster & Carlisle have fitted.
3) Have an independant dealership apply the Copperseal - which I need to get the opinion of Autotechnica first. Failing this a drive to Stafford the first week in March as I am on Annual Leave then.

I will probably be going for option 3, but I first need to discuss this with both parties, as I have had enough of this arseing around.

First week in March is GOOD for me John, coffee on.

Just get the shims off eBay - I already have the Copperslip.

I love these cars so much I'll do anything to help, and I'm OLD (LOL) - Martin Sander please note!

TIME to harangue these Audi UK guys in the press...

Note: big moan from Chris Ebbs this week on an RS5 issue/owner, so AUDI UK Customer Services are already being kicked! Is that a surprise? Err....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK, since writing this (and I've now edited to show) I have in fact written twice to Chris Ebbs at AutoExpress:
FIRST was on 7th Feb 2013, and SECOND yesterday 21st Feb 2013: and here's 'what I wrote':
ON 21st Feb 2013 @ 11.40 GMT I wrote:
"Hi Chris (AutoExpress), while the RS5 case study (in this weeks AutoExpress) is interesting, sad even; you really do need to look at the brake-squeal issues being experienced by RS3 owners here in the UK, and the appalling response to owner complaints from Audi UK, Martin Sander, Director of Audi UK included.
And brake squeal affects the TT RS too - same brakes of course.
Very best regards
ON 7th Feb 2013 @ 16.31 GMT I'd previously written:
"Dear Mr. Morgan (AutoExpress), here's one to get your teeth into: owners of Audi RS3's have been complaining throughout 2012 (I know because I complained about mine in February 2012) about low speed (5 to 0-mph) brake squeal and Audi UK to date (Martin Sander (MD) included) have yet to provide an effective resolution i.e., the problem remains.
Note: the same brake squeal issue applies to the Audi TTRS, too (same Audi/Brembo brakes)
Now, while Audi UK claim they are waiting for Brembo to produce an effective 'fix' for this issue, Brembo themselves are advertising a replacement brake pad/solution; the advert actually says: "New Brembo Sport Pad For Audi TTRS & RS3. Fed up with squeaking factory front brake pads on your TT RS or RS3? We have an answer for you: the Brembo Sport brake pad set! Tried and tested cost effective pad upgrade available from APS.
Maybe you might ask Audi UK what if anything they are doing to resolve this issue on what are relatively NEW cars.
For reference, see the following Audi-sport posts (I'm 45bvtc by the way):
http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/rs3-fo...l-please-register-your-frustrations-here.html
http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/rs3-forum/178759-finally-brakes-fix-out.html
And, as if the above isn't bad enough: Audi UK actually gave Jeremy Clarkson a NEW RS4 to review for his Sunday Times column and guess what Clarkson complained about? That's right, low speed brake squeal: see http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/rs3-forum/175762-audi-uk-gives-clarkson-new-audi-brake-squeal-evaluate.html"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ON 21st Feb 2013 @ 13.04 GMT (smack in the middle of lunch and purposefully tongue-in-cheek) I sent to Martin Sander, MD of Audi UK:
"Dear Mr. Sander, my apologies, I should have sent a copy of my e-mail to AutoExpress magazine to you, too.

Regards"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Within the hour I had a telephone call from Craig Westwood (Customer Relations Manager, Digital Communications, Audi UK Executive Office) to "thank me" for writing to Audi UK with my/owner concerns...
An hour later I concluded that (a) Audi UK do know of the brake-squeal problem, (b) they are working on it, (c) they've no comment on the Brembo product currently being marketed, (d) there are only 600-RS3's here in the UK so it's not high priority, (e) they are only interested in providing a 'permanent' fix, (f) a permanent fix is being developed, and (g) have a nice day.
I did propose Audi UK prepare a definitive statement so that ALL RS3 owners were on the same hymn sheet, err...
So, that's the information/understanding I have from Craig Westwood, and he did sound positive, sincere and appreciative.
But writing to AutoExpress certainly rattled someone's cage!
Hope this all makes sense guys...
