I read the brochure, seen the videos etc. but I'd like to hear the opinion first hand from people who tried both MMI Touch plus navigation on the new Audi A3 and have also used the SD-card based navigation with MMI Radio.

So far I only know that the SD-card navigation doesn't have the 3D view of cities and mountains, that the screen is smaller and lower resolution, but I'd also like to know what other differences in speed, features and comfort there are. Thanks! :)

You also don't get the touch pad handwriting input with normal SD nav. That's a deal breaker for me.

I don't care much about the touchpad (especially since it's an expensive addition), but if there's another serious feature missing from the SD-based navigation, I'd love to know.

you dont get speed-sign camera recognition without MMI plus touch, and no option for Audi Connect, no Google Maps etc.

I don't know if MMI plus is the same as the tech pack we have in the Netherlands but in that case you would get a 7" screen vs the standard 5.8" inch. Personally I detest screens with a wide bezel so that alone would be a reason for me to get whichever package comes with the larger screen.

Of course no matter what MMI version we buy it is a complete rip-off because all that computer related technology can be had outside a car for a couple of hundred pounds/euros/dollars. It amazes me how much Audi can charge for this sort of stuff. The profit margins on tech options must be enormous.

I wouldn't say it's a deal-breaker for me personally but it is handy at times. Frankly I use the voice for entering stuff more than the touch-pad. It's also worth noting that it's not just used for writing letters to enter addresses and so forth, but is also used like a track-pad for moving around the map.

There's no option for Audi Connect or Google Maps on the A3 full stop at the present time.

There is in sweden. I tested a car with Connect this weekend, a3 SB . Its configurable in the online configurator

For me, the single biggest annoyance with my current nav is inputting text by rotating a dial. Very very distracting and I can't do it while driving. The new system works perfectly. It was the main reason for me optioning the tech pack. Different strokes n all that...

For anyone who might be interested, there's a video ( New Audi A3 2012 - YouTube ) that shows a guy fiddling around with SD card-based navigation (around the 4th minute) amongts other things. I took another test drive to check the quality of the 5.8" screen and decided that it's adequate thanks to the fact that Audi are using anti-aliasing on text and graphics. So I decided to stick to SD-card based navigation as opposed to changing my order to include navigation with MMI touch.

I was trawling you tube thinking that by now there must be some video of the different MMI systems for the new A3. I am very interested in the optional MMI touch Nav Plus system. I was hoping to find a good video of the various features of the system being used and explored. Including all the set up options for car, sat nav, phone book/contacts display, media/playlist/album artwork etc. The best I can find is this one but it is in German but otherwise would be close to what I was trying to find.

Audi A3 (2012) im Test: MMI Navigation plus und Audi Connect - YouTube

Has anyone else managed to find something similar but in English with UK car? Thanks in anticipation in the meantime I will get a German dictionary! :)

I have ordered the tech pack and noted that the radio may be a different quality . It mentions phase diversity and triple tuner I think but does not mention these on the standard radio , also it has a DVD player and TMC pro . Maybe more

Thanks for the offer, it was really a general demo type video clip of the screen display working through the various icons/ features/settings/options as they are being explored. I found the german clip as detailed in previous post but it would be good to see similar with a Uk spec system. Wouldnt need commentary. If that was possible it would be appreciated. :)

Sorry to bump such an old thread but I'm looking for a video review on the SD card based navigation and the links above doesn't work anymore (apart from the HDD base german one).

I see an A3 I'm interested but it doesn't have sat nav, so would like to see a demo if possible.
