My A3 told me "service in 1000 miles or 229 days" today, hoped I wouldnt see this message for a few months yet! It needs oil/filter/fuel filter. Quoted £195 for the whole job at a local Audi specialist.

So I can check I'm not getting ripped off, what would be a recommended oil?

2009 Audi A3 2.0 TDi 170 - 6sp Manual - 2wd

Thanks

Lee

No problem always happy to help.

Favourite that link, your car falls nicely into all those prices.

Interim service is oil and oil filter.

I think you'll find that price won't include the fuel filter as i was charged extra for this when mine had the fixed price major service at £299, also charged extra for pollen filter so it didn't work out all that cheap in the end!

I've read the internet and it says..

Audi UK said:
Our fixed price jobs, interim service £159

Audi UK said:
Interim and major service INCLUSIONS: Air filter clean or replacement (if necessary), Fuel filter (diesel only) or Spark plugs (petrol only) replacement

Audi UK said:
Price includes parts, oil, labour and VAT. Offer may be varied or withdrawn at any time.

So I would assume, fuel filter included..

My local Indy charged £120 for the oil change, oil filter, fuel filter and pollen filter and coolant change.

I am in Cornwall.. competition for Audi main dealers and independant specialists isn't high and I will only use a specialist or main dealer since I don't trust just anyone to work on my car. If it wasn't for the dealer stamp in the service book I'd be doing all of the servicing myself as I've done on every car I've ever owned previously.

On the positive side of taking it to Audi main dealer, which is 44 miles away, they might let me try the Audi A5 TDi that I'm thinking of upgrading to later this year.

I'm also in Cornwall, Really haven't been impressed with Truro Audi other than the quality of loan car (last time new TT 2.0TFSI). My boss also didn't rate them and now takes his RS5 and his daughters S4 Avant to Exeter as he gets a better deal. May try them next time!

Well, made a mistake.. fuel filter is an additional £66+VAT as confirmed on the phone. You aren't the first person to tell me that Audi Truro were poor.. so total cost for service is £226.00 and its a 44 mile drive with a £15 courtesy car usage per day.

AVS VAG specialists in Redruth have come highly recommended, £195 for the same job and free courtesy car and only 15 miles away..

Where abouts in Cornwall are you? Redruth would be even further for me to go than Truro, not much time wise in going to either Plymouth or Exeter Audi.

So far i've blagged a free car with Truro so far as they've kept cocking up so i've always had a complaint lol

£226 isnt exactly expensive though to service the car with a fuel filter aswell, when you consider they use decent oil & oem parts, I think its fairly good value for a dealer tbh & if you're that anal, a dealer stamp.

I'm down in Penzance.. quite far from everywhere! If I had a Ford I'd be ok since dealer is less than 1 mile away

Am not familiar with servicing costs since in the past I've always done it DIY.. just thought that its alot of money to pay someone to undo one bolt.. sit down and watch it drain... do up bolt.. fill with oil..

I'm the same, ****** ford garage up the road but who wants a ford! lol

I bet Cornwall is the only county in the UK that only has the one Audi main dealer, which i find rather odd considering the number of Audi's you see on the road these days

Yep, I know!

Decided to just to the fuel filter myself, seems alot of money to have it done for me, will only take me 5 minutes. Get Audi to do the oil service, get my 'anal' main dealer stamp..

Happy Days!

5W30, its what i use in mine.

could use castrol magnatec, Mobil 1 or shell Helix (i have currently shell helix as that is what Audi Leicester used in my last oil service.

Thanks for replies.

Have decided that I don't want to pay some 'technician' not mechanic.. watch oil drip out of my car and charge me £xxx for a stamp so I'm going to do all of my own servicing. I intend on keeping my A3 for at least the next 5 years so as long as I document my servicing and keep receipts, I've got the history for the next owner.

Not fussed about the longlife oil thing anymore.. I'll do annual servicing.

Went for the Shell Helix oil, OEM oil filter and OEM fuel filter.. job for the weekend. Now off to search how to reset the service indicator!

I wouldnt put anything but edge 5w30 in my car considering what it actually does, annual or not.

Oil is oil..

Shell Helix 5w30 is apparentely what Audi were going to put in..

Ok, if oil is oil, go put some cheap halfords oil in your car, good luck with that.

Audi do not use Shell helix Oil, they use Quantum or Castrol Edge.

As long as it has the relevant VAG requirements and DPF compatible, so VW507? then I'd have no issues using cheap Halfords oil.. I've used Halfords own brand oils in all my motorbikes for years. 450cc enduro and 1000cc+ engines..

Yeah thats true :)

Although in there Demo Cars they use Shell Helix most of the time.

I would rather use Water than Halfords own Oil in my car ! Just saying haha :keule: ;)

Quite a brand snobish point of view, probably shouldn't expect much more from typical Audi owners, I can understand why there is such a massive Audi bashing following on Pistonheads now. Oil has to meet strict guidelines, if it meets those then why not use it?

Congratulations, cause now you're a typical audi owner.

Yeah probably as strict as the guidelines for tyres & many other things that get accidentally ignored, something thats cheap, usually has a reason for being so imho, thats not to say I would buy the most expensive item available, as I pay a fair price for my Edge from audi tbh, but I'd rather, when considering the importance of the product, use something tried & tested as being reliable & quality.

Maybe some of us choose the better oil because we want our engines to last longer, run better, not need swapping out more often, etc, thus saving us further costs going forward.

I rate there tools as I use them myself, but I wouldnt use there engine oil tbh as I dont think its as good quality as the Edge product.

If you prefer pistonheads attitudes, then feel free to use there forum, but lose the attitude on here please.
