Hi all,

I've got an X reg quattro sport. 180bhp model, I've had a look on the sticky thread on tuning these engines. And as far as I can tell I've got an ARY engine and I think it has the ko3s turbo. Can anyone guide me as to weather this is the case and what sort of max power it would handle without dieing. The cars done 112k, and I don't think the turbo will have ever been changed. I'm just looking to get it remapped for the time being. Will get a panel filter but that would probably be as extensive as I can afford for the time being.

Any advise would be appreciated

Hi mate,

I'd guess that yours is classed as a facelift model, being an X reg (same as mine but mine's a 2wd), and therefore you most likely have the K03S (others will confirm soon enough). Have a read of http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-forum-8l-chassis/169074-good-bad-idea.html#post1683263 and http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-forum-8l-chassis/174679-these-worth-doing.html#post1735029 whole threads to gain some idea/inspiration, and Jardo's http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-forum-8l-chassis/130554-jardos-new-man-boooost-toy-22.html thread.

I would go for the TIP (turbo intake pipe) (£80) first and panel filter (or Honda S2000 filter). Don't bother with a 007/008p diverter valve, the OEM one is fine as long as it doesn't flutter, if so replace with another OEM (£35) which are a 1/3 of the price of Forge DVs.

With a decent remap, front mount intercooler (FMIC), 3" downpipe and cat back or decat and system you'll see 220-230bhp. You could just get a generic remap that will get you 190bhp or add a few more ponies (210 possibly) if you get the bolt-ons that I've mentioned. I'm in the same position as you (see sig) but want a custom map and need an FMIC next. My car is in for its MOT so I'm waiting to hear that it's all cool for upping the power as my mate runs the garage and owns an S3 so he is a VAG nut. I have a slight leak on the radiator too so I'm not upping the power just yet until it's all running sweet. Check when the cambelt was done last before you get a remap.

So, price wise it would look something like:

TIP (£80 eBay Creation Motorsport)
Panel filter (£35 or £20 for S2000)
OEM DV (£35)
FMIC (£200 inc pipes)
3" DP and decat (mine was £85 but they are £100 on eBay, add £100 for sports cat instead of decat)
Cat back Milltek (£350 - I'm keeping my OEM one)
Map (£350-400 for custom, £250 for generic I think)

Cheap way would be £635 for around 205-210bhp or nearly a grand for 230bhp.

Sweet thanks for the reply wasn't expecting one so quick! Yes its a facelift model, managed to pick it up cheap with a horrendous rattle in the engine. I took a punt and fitted a new oil pump and chain tensioner and it was fixed! Ive got a decent car for about half the price its worth or there abouts. Im just looking for a little more power! Well I can get a generic one from a friend of a friend, for a decent price. So I was just thinking a panel filter and the map for now. Not sure how much a custom would be. And I don't want a noisy exhaust because it's my family car. My partner uses it as the daily with our daughter so it needs to stay quiet for now. And the fact I don't have a lot of money's. I'm just trying to get a bit more power without having to spend too much money's and not blow it up at the same time.
The DV works fine as far as I can tell. It just a quick puff of air as far as I can tell. The only thing I've done so far to the car is drill some holes in the bottom of the air box for bit more induction noise, and fitted some HIDs.

Cool man, that's kinda what I want a motorway cruiser and a roundabout bruiser for when I'm by myself in the car :)

Just get a remap then; I wouldn't bother with anything else - it's an easy 190-195bhp with the K03S (I've heard). I'm just greedy and want to hit as close as 200bhp per tonne as possible.

Agree with everything other than the Creation TIP. They are ****.

Forge or SFS are the largest and best flowing on the market, and SFS have just introduced an over sized high flow TIP which is said to give another 3/4 bhp over their standard one.

Fairy nuff :) He wanted to save some pennies and CM's are £80 whereas Forges are a good chunk more.

Add Simon Colyer on Facebook; he can supply a supersize SFS one cheaper than a new Forge.

The difference is huge, this is a Forge vs a CM. -

These little things all add up to a huge difference in the end result, which is why two cars of the seemingly same specification can have such different figures.

Have you tried one? I have nothing against the forge or the SFS one, but i thought i would test the CM tip and its been fine so far...

My Creation Motorsport one looks like the Forge one at the bottom of the pic. £80 eBay bought after Xmas. I think they've changed since that skinny one.

A restriction is a restriction, on a little snail like the K03s flow is everything. Niki at R Tech has done back to back tests against a selection, Forge flows better than all.

The restriction after the first bend is one thing, but the internal diameter of the turbo entry bend is another issue.

I believe CM did change their design; but only after comments from tuners about their products. The turbo entry bend is still restrictive though as it is in not enlarged to allow equal flow. The other issue is the location of take offs at the turbo entry.

The SFS superflow tip will hopefully change the game for K03 boys, I am going to be doing some actual testing against the old and new SFS tips. So expect an in depth write up soon.

On the face of it the SFS will be a huge benefit to anybody looking to buy/replace your TIP. If you already had one I probably wouldn't bother until it is further tested.

Ah ok, I didn't know niki had already done tests. He is remapping mine next month so I will find out how much of a restriction my cm tip is. Not sure whether mine is a revised tip or not... I will keep an eye out on your write up mate as I didn't even know there is a superflow sfs tip!

thanks guys sorry its been so long, well although yes i am restricted on moneys im making a few savings each month so i may be able to get a tip as well as a map in the next month or so.

but its good to know the info, as 16Klappw says small differences can make big differences on the end result

I have a non face lift quattro 1.8t, so i can only assume mines a ko3 not an S. Im really quite confused as to whats best to do as apposed to upgrading a turbo. Would a ko3s be a good upgrade and is it litrally just a bolt on affair or do i need to upgrade downpipe to 3" etc etc
Id love some help on this as im so confused as to whats best :S
Thanks, and i apollogise in advance for hi-jacking your thread Sticky lol

Depends what you want to do; however I can talk from first hand experience in saying you will need a K04 (S3 turbo) at a minimum to even be as fast as a FWD car with a K03s. A K03s just isn't enough with a quattro if you want performance.

IMO sort the suspension, brakes and chassis out then do a K04 conversion.

Sorry to comment on this post but not sure how you work this as i am new to this. i have a audi a3 turbo sport but the turbo has gone on it and needing a new one asap, just woundering if any of you know anyone selling one as i need the car on monday. many thaks :)
