ASR Retrofit?

ok, so someone at work got me thinking.

Would it be feasible to retrofit ASR to a facelift B5? I'm not talking full ESP, just basic traction control.

could it be as simple as swapping the ABS modulator to one that supports ASR, such as an S/RS4 B5 or a B6.
Looks as though the Bosch 5.3 unit 8E0614111G or 8E0614111AJ can be re-coded to be Non CANbus, So could be a winner...

AWD would be an option, if i wanted to transfer everything from mine to a TQS. audio/performance parts/CF trim etc... oh and NEW coilovers.... not really wanting to do all that...

There comes a point where you realise theres no point spending more time, effort and money trying to put sticking plasters over the flaws of a FWD car.

Seems like a big step, but in reality its a weekends work to swap the bits over, and you'll get most of the money back when you sell the old car.

i had a 1.8 b5 was going to do facelift conversion, wheels, i.c.e etc then came across the TQS and instantly wanted one was going to go scotland for one then actually ended up in southampton and have never looked back even though the car has had its fair share of my wage thats just the beauty of it all lol !!

It is another option though, and he did say he didn't want to do the quattro thing. Both ways have their respective pros and cons.

exactly. if it can be a matter of taking a ABS unit from another model, recode and at worst some wiring... it could be a simple (and porentially cheap) option.

if you're confident about doing it, and have all the info eg wiring diagrams then why not give it a try.

I've only ever heard people complaining about traction control systems getting in the way and being heavy handed.

Turning the power off just makes you slower.

You need to increase traction if you want to go faster. That means better tyres, more wheel drive, or a locking diff.

Probably, but if he cracks it then he's going to be well happy, and it adds to the knowledge base.

But as said, I'd go with alternatives, because as you said it would take many hours, and I've spent(spending) enough time on my car(s).

But also, what is the point having all that traction if you've got nothing to exploit it with ie power, and you don't necessarily need power, a sorted chassis is much more satisfying IMO.

Probably the best thing the OP could do is take a Driver training course,learning car control etc.

And they class us as ***** due to the fact that they no we are right when we say drive a quattro you will never look at anything else again !!

Take a FWD owner put them in to a quattro for a day, then back in there FWD by the end of the day they will be wanting to go and buy/own a quattro !!!

Auto Electrician moved 3yr ago onto a new role as an Automotive Electrical engineer for a uk based OEM following about 10yr exp, should muddle through... :icon_thumright:

Dont judge a book by its cover, as most of my work involves development of future models, i have been trained to a grade one advanced driving, under tuition of an ex police instructor

this is being done more as a "can it be achieved" technical exercise, keeping the grey matter working haha.

Kev, with respect, its my hole to have... I have spare time to be tinkering on the car... and if its a poor outcome, so be it. worst case is ive wasted a few quid and some time I would no doubt have spent watching the little grey box in the corner of the living room. As previously said, its more of a technical exercise, which will add to the forum knowledge and hell, we all learn best by making mistakes.

I will be having a word, of course. However as its an OEM option being added, they are usually fine.
