I picked my 2010 B8 1.8 TFSI A4 up about a week or two ago. It the two times I’ve driven it since I’ve noticed that when cold it’s really difficult to change from 1[SUP]st[/SUP] to 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] gear, you need to be really positive with the change. It is much better when it’s warmed up but it is still noticeably not as smooth as changing through the other gears (the car has 20k on the clock).

It’s a bit naughty of the Audi dealer to let a car go out with this issue but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they didn’t Know.

It’s also slightly concerning as the car had a sales banner in the door pocket on the test drive that was 2k less that the price they were asking when I bought it. Hopefully not a sign that they were trying to shift a bit of a Lemon (thought at the time that this was a sales trick to make me think I was getting a good deal).

I’ve emailed the salesman this morning but haven’t had a reply yet .

Does anyone have any experience of this problem and would a dealer be able to resolve it quickly or does anyone have any advice.

Thanks

TBH if I saw that, then I would also be rather peed of tbh, definitely take it up with them & take pics of the said sales banner if still in pocket, which fro your words may have been removed now.

As for gearbox, take it back mate simple as that, get it either repaired by them foc or refund.

Funny my 2010 B8 A4 is in Audi Belfast at the minute as it is really hard to get into first gear.

They rang today saying the gearbox has been stripped and they have ordered 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear to repair it and will update me Wednesday.
It also had a clutch studded 3-4 weeks ago on cold mornings but that has gone now.
They said they will check the DMF and clutch while it is stripped.

So far 100% happy with the service I have been getting.

Sorry NHN, I just read it back. It was the other way round. The sales banner that was in the door pocket was 2k higher than I bought it for. Hopefully they weren't trying to get rid of a car with a problem quickly.

I've called the service deparment and they are going to get someone to give me a call.

Ahhhh ok now get you, hey maybe they were feeling kind lol.

Maybe they were, I thought at the time it was a crafty sale technique “we’ve just discounted it”, hopefully not that they needed to sell it so the repair to the gearbox doesn’t get booked against the profit of selling the car but is covered by the warranty.

Sounds vaguely familiar to me, Does yours gear change feel clunky between 1st & 2nd? Because Im also having problems with my gearbox too. Seems to be a little rattle when pulling away from maybe gear linkage and a small whine in second gear. I have always found mine worse when cold but thought it was normal, now this rattle and whine has appeared in not sure it is.

It does feel clunky but I haven't noticed a whine. I've booked the car in next week at my local Audi dealer, not the one I bought it from so we'll see. They did say they would need the car for a few days though.

Hi Matt,
I have an 09 with 17k on the clock and i have the same issue. When it is cold it is sometimes difficult to get into second. Exactly the same as you describe. Then it is hard to go back to first unless you are stopped. It all gets better once its warmed up.
Let me know how you get on when you have been to the dealer.

Will do, it's booked in on Monday and I'm leaving it with them for a few days. I also noticed that the rear washer doesn't work last night so will ask them to look at that.

Hi Matt,
Any update on the gearbox issue? I had my car in at the dealer last week and mentioned mine was difficult to get into second when it was cold too. They said it was a known issue. Something to do with the viscosity of the gearbox oil.

I've got the car back, they said they adjusted the selected linkage. It is much better than before but it's still not 100%. I think I'll just mention it again at the next service.

I had a similar problem with my gearbox.Selection of 1st and 2nd was difficult, and when in gear the stick could move 5mm side to side. After having the gearbox stripped and a new 2nd gear fitted, problem was still there until they changed the viscosity of the gear oil.Sorted.But the stick still moves. The oil they put in was thinner.Soz dont have the specs.

The wife's A3 1.8T Black Edition has always had a "notchy" gear change in 1st and 2nd. I bought it to the attention of the dealer shortly after taking delivery with every time them confirming no fault found! I gave up in the end!

As we were looking to change up to a A4 Avant BE recently I test drove the petrol and diesel variants and can confirm that the gear change in the petrol is very poor, notchy and imprecise. It appears that the petrol gearboxes are quite weak.......For that reason I ordered the diesel 177 which by comparison has tighter and more precise gear change with no notchiness!

Some year back i purchased a B5 from an Audi Main dealer and when i collected and paid for the car the price was £1000 LESS than the price agreed at the time of sale. I paid the lesser amount and THEN asked the salesman why was I paying less than the agreed price the week previous. I was told it was the company policy to drop the price of the car the week before the car was sent to auction on those vehicles which had been on sale for six weeks and had not sold.It turns out my car was going to be auctioned off on the monday after I bought the car on a saturday and the dealer let me have the discounted price albeit I was unaware of their inhouse sales policy.
Guess what, five years late I went back and bought another used car from them and from the very same same Salesman.
SOMETIMES Maindealers are honest folks !
