My Adventures in Plasti Dip

I want my grille surround dipped :D and that plasic bit inbetween the front and rear glass on the s3 :D and all those grey bits on the s3 dipped grey again :D

Not used it yet. Can't think of any thing to use it on.

Any HVLP sprayer will be fine.

if you fancy testing it on my wheels i'll owe you one!...
on second thoughts Plymouth is a little far

need grill doing in black too as it goes, so if you've still got the gun out and doing the posting?

The gun won't be out for a couple of months yet.
Or untill the weather sorts it self out.
But I'm more than willing to do it for you.

Got bit of a back log of stuff cause of this weather but one good weekend and I'll be back on track.

thanks for reply - no rush at all!
keep up the good work and keep us posted

Hi Scott,

Hope you don't mind me piggybacking your thread, but didn't seem worth starting a fresh one.

Inspired by your antics I ordered a couple of cans, primarily to spray up my old A3 S Line grille and foggies, but also to have a play :)

Of course I decided to play first and decided to have a crack on an Xbox 360.

Before:

It's pretty easy stuff to work with although I did manage to spray some of my patio....oops. Lesson learned.

Next job was to put a couple of coats on the white iPhone connector I got with my Dension gateway kit. This was a bit tricky because it was wired into the car and I wanted to do it without stripping out the glovebox and cabling. I cut open a bin bag and spead it out flat. I then cut a small hole and pulled the cable through it and masked up the dash. I gave the connector a couple of coats and the end product isn't bad.

I'll probably rip it off and do it properly when it warms up a bit but for now at least it's taken the edge off as before the white stuck out like a sore thumb.

I'll have a stab at the grille and fog light surrounds at the weekend when I have more time to get a nice finish. Great product though.

nice its good to see people using it over here more and more
check out are facebook page

Looks good Tempy.

It is very easy stuff to work with, just spray and walk away really.
I really want to do two tone on my wheels but lack of good weather and time is not helping. :(

Welcome to the site Auto Dip.

Any one playing with Plasti dip yet?

Scott, I'm going to attempt coating the RS3 sign on my car, I've ordered the High Gloss black Audi rear rings and front end rings in High Gloss black.

figured it would be easier to replace the Emblems directly, do you think I could leave the RS3 Emblem on the car and mask around or am I better off removing the RS3 badge altogether.

not fussed about the front grille emblem as if I painted it high gloss black it would be lost due to the high gloss black grille.

final question for now, do I need to prep the chrome RS3 emblem; primer, sand it in any way.....

let me know pal...... After all you are the dark force in Plasti dip

From what I have read, it's a case of sanding prep if you want it permanent, no prep if you want to peel it off at a later date.

Leave the badge on and mask around it but leave a inch square around the badge (You can do the same with normal badges).
Do a couple of passes of dip, so its a solid black colour but thick enough for you to peel off.
When its dried a little bit, you could be able to pick at one corner that's on the paint work and peel it off.
The dip normally cuts it self if there is a gab between the badge and paint work.
By removing the dip when its just dried and not very thick, makes it easier to remove with out the need or knifes or pulling the dip off the badge, this would happen if you leave the dip on for a couple of hours.
It should only take it 10-20 mins depending on the weather.

From what I have read, it's a case of sanding prep if you want it permanent, no prep if you want to peel it off at a later date.

You don't need to sand it at all or any prep apart form making sure its clean. something like APC works well. That's what I use.
Even by sanding the badge or what ever you're spraying will do nothing to help the dip stick, the only way to do it is to buy the PD primer and paint it on that.

Hi Scott,

great advice, comprehensive and to the point sunshine..... Would never have known that I could do it that way, I will of course follow you're advice.

Will attempt to do this in the next couple of weeks, will post up my mod...... Check me out, I've come over all 'street'

cheers Pal.

Weekend's full, my son's birthday...... However I've ordered my first can of Black Plasti-Dip of the net.....:eyebrows:
Next weekend is going to be...... experimental, could end up just being mental.
Would love to have the time and skill to spray my alloys, thinking of getting the car detailed around April
time and could ask the detailer to try it for me.
:ninja: My entire car will end up Matt black at this rate......

It will be fine.
I did the chrome on my grill (I think pics are in here) and its fine with a pressure washer.
It will peel if you hold it 2" away at max pressure but none of my dipped sections has peeled due to jet washer use.

Haha.
Go care full, it will remove all hair when peeled.
So I heard from a friend.

Lol...The possibilities are endless

I showed my mate the pics from my Xbox in this thread and he asked if I would Plastidip his iPhone 5 lightning adapter. For some reason Apple only sell them in white despite selling iPhones and iPads in both black and white models. Almost all speaker docks are also black, so out came the Plastidip :)

Looks pretty good I think. He's happy anyway. This is dangerous stuff though. I keep looking around the house for things to spray.

Nice job Robbie. One the car yet?

Tempy, I do the same daily mate.
But I can't justify the wasting the price of dip on something that the wife will just tell to pull it off.
Plus I can't dip in the house with gun and the weather don't help.

Come on warmth and drynes, I want to dip my car.

I've never understood why apple has refused to update the charger and various accessories?! They don't even sell a white macbook anymore (I don't think) yet all chargers are white. It looked good when the product matched it, but surely they can change it to black now. I'd rather have a black charger to go with my aluminium laptop than a white one!

I really need to get some plastidip sorted. I am still slightly tempted to do my car matt black too. If I had 18" wheels I think i'd get it donw, but I think it might be a bit bold of a statement for my 17's :D

My insurance is due this month, and I think I'm going with sky insurance as they've given me a decent quote. When I ring them o confirm I'm going to ask what they say about temporary colour changes. If it doesn't affect premiums I may well be up for this :)

It's a long drive, and Laura will hate it...but I'd love it.

You got kids, I'll come to you with my garage.

Nice job Robbie. One the car yet?

Weather's tragic again.... Too cold and wet, snow forecast tomorrow wtf:unsure:

That's been my issue all winter.
Not touched the stuff.
Need to get back on it. Got a back log of jobs.
