[2.0 TDI] How to know if your cylinder head will Crack (if it hasnt yet)?

yes it's a C

Also mine is an A and i have 160000km and never cracked nor had any issues with water leasking!

Im in the process of looking at a 53 plate 140 TDI, goign for a test drive on monday and already read up on a few other common faults.

Now from what ive read ive got a feeling the engine code will fall within the faulty ones as it is a 53 plate, its got FASH so im going to go through and see whats been done as its only on 60k

mine is a 53 plate, just been and checked and its an A:(

I do have 145k on the clock, i got the car when it had 106k,

it runs sweet as a nut, is there any way of telling if it has been done, dont loose no water at tall, some times have a bit of smoke on start up, smells of diesel thought and i think its me being a bit quick on the start up (not looking for the glow plug light if it has one lol)

but all that said top engine and love my a3

We have a 54 reg golf tdi and its a type A and its done 45k miles but no signs of leaks or cracks smoke etc.

Will changing the coolant regularly minimise the risk?

I would of thought changing the coolant would only do so much, if its going to go its going to go :p

Just because it's a code A doesn't mean it's 100% going to fail. There are millions of these engines around in different cars and they're not all packing up. If they were, it'd be causing uproar and the dealers would be changing heads everyday.

In answer to your question a3glenn, it's highly unlikely yours has been changed, otherwise it would have a later code on it. They wouldn't have replaced it with an old type head that they know has had problems. AFAIK all head changes get the latest version of the revised heads, which are code C or D depending on when it was changed.
There's nothing you can do to stop it happening, if it's going to happen that is. It's all to do with how the head is cast.

Unfortunately mine just cracked :( and i need to change it, i think i will change the entire engine if i will find one at a decent price. is a normal bkd engien from a manual gearbox - seat altea compatible with my car? Will it be a streight swap?

Thank you

Hi
Have a 56 plate Seat Leon with a BKD engine, not sure what the code is as it is in the garage having the head pressure tested. Oil in coolant was the symptom with mine and lots of oil being burnt. Garage replaced oil cooler first but that didn't solve it hence the head being sent off for testing. Is there any come back for those of us who have had this problem as it is obviously a poorly made engine? How much would a ball park figure be for a replacement head (the garage want £200 to get it off and test it)?

im now getting mine done 1200 at audi been lookin else were but hard too find a good 1

Found out mines a C! Is oil in the coolant a definite sign of the head being cracked bearing in mind the oil cooler was changed?

Hi, I'm looking into getting a 140 and stumbled upon this. Does anyone understand the numbering scheme used for the years below? In general I think .5 means Sept to Feb cars but then there's .55 and .6?

03G 103 308 A years 2003 to 2005.55 allmost all cracked - 03 to a 55 plate?
03G 103 308 B
years 2005.5 to 2006.6 only a few cracked - 55 to 56 plate?
03G 103 308 C years 2006.5 to 2007.5 none cracked cracked - 56 plate to 57 plate

Just checked mine and its A  should i be worried?? my car has done 116.000 miles dont lose any coolent but there is abit of white smoke in these cold mornings? other than than it seems fine?

Right! Its a "B"! Hopefully the good one.

Apparently not!
I'm looking for a replacement head. On the first post all codes for BKD end with 308 A, B or C.
I found a few on ebay but although the title says is for BKD, the codes are ending with 351 and a letter. Are they for BKD or not?

Johnny, ignore previous information which was not necessarily accurate.

The cylinder head part number from Audi for a BKD engine (140) 2004 onwards is :- 03G 103 351 B

Part ex number for head including valves and camshaft is :- 03G 103 264 GX or FX depending on chassis number

Silly question.. but is this covered by some sort of warranty that the engines
with this fault should have been re-called? If not I am going to be extremely
P*ss%d off and I am tempted to take Audi to court over this. I went for an Audi
because of the so-called reputation of them being reliable and having an
excellent build quality. MEH!

My cam belt tensioner snapped a few months back.. and of course had a fight with the engine! My cylinder head cracked slightly and they sent it away to an engineering company to have it reconditioned. what the fk they did to it I dont know but appeared to have worked. god knows how long that will last

Not a silly question but one that has been asked dozens of times.

Audi never accepted that there was a problem even though they revised the head ! There is no recall and although loads of people (relatively speaking bearing in mind there are millions of BKD engines ) have tried to get Audi to pay for a new head, none, to my knowledge, have succeeded.

You are welcome to try and take them to court but it might be cheaper to buy a new head, or car for that matter !!! lol

Good luck !

I had to replace my cylinder head on the A4 cost me £2500± :(

This was a 2007 170 though.

Hi Guys,

I know this is the A3 section, but it appears my head may have cracked on my B7, engine code BLB. Does anyone know if the A, B and C heads are on the A4 aswell?

I am one annoyed Audi owner!!

Cheers,

Chris

Quick question mines a 2004 and have to top up the water every 4/6 weeks its only goes down as low as min everytime no white gunk on the header tank lid either and ive had to put oil in it once in the 8 months ive had it, there is a little white smoke on cold mornings but soon goes after a mile or so. Would this be the head or is this normal comsumption of coolant we do abou 100 miles a week in it? Another niggling problem is it starts first time when cold but when warm it takes a few turns to start, any ideas?:meeting:

White goo would be on the underside of the oil filler cap not header tank. There is no 'normal' consumption of coolant but could be down to lots of reasons. If you have a cylinder head suffix 'A' then it could be to do with a porous head.

The warm start problem is almost certainly the starter motor. The ecu injects less fuel when hot than it does cold and the starter motor needs more 'ooomph' to get it going ! This is a common problem.

I assume you have a 2.0 litre tdi BKD engine code ?

Just checked no goo under oil filler cap pulled off engine cover but cant see part number? Is a new starter expensive? Have just replaced the battery today aswell!

Part number is under the fuel pipes.

Not sure how much a new starter is - search forum for 'hot start' or 'starter motor' and someone may have posted a price.

I had a warm start problem and changed battery and starter and lot of other stuff. I ended up getting a remap with the hot start fix mapped into the software that was over a year ago and has start first turn of the key ever since

Care to elaborate on the map ? May help others

Just had a quick look to check mine. I have been putting off for a bit....just in case. Looks like it's a C from what I can tell. I take it this is the numbers/letters we are looking for?

I've been saying that the hot start issue is software related for a while now and as mine suffers from hot start issue & I am getting a remap on Thursday I'll see if they can story this out

Reason I've thought it was software related is if you un plug the temp sensor it will fire up instantly regardless of engine temperature

Oh dear, my head is an A and I have the hot start problem!

Can I simply clean the starter out? Interested in the map solution!

Hot start problem is in most cases caused by a worm starter motor. I had exactly the same issue with a 2005 Golf 2.0 Tdi (BKD) which was resolved by replacing the starter motor using a recon unit from ECP. Replacing the starter motor is a 30 minute job abd can be done on your driveway just remember to discount your battery first.
