Should these two pipes be joined

By the looks of the pic, that would be for the breather system, that vents excess emissions back into your intake. They are known to break cause of the oil that weakens then plastic/rubber.

I could be completely wrong thou.

Yes... its part of the PCV system... I suspect this will also be giving you an air leak and allowing unmetered air in... get it fixed :)

What's missing?

A turbo

In all seriousness though, I don't think anything is missing, I think the hard plastic pipe in the lower section has broken off inside the flexible hose, hence them seperating.

Replace the plastic bit :)

Oi!!!!!!!!! Dave!!!!!!!!!! Leave my iPhone alone lol ok want to order the part ebay jobby what am I looking for I has been like this from I got the car, just changed the oil and filter ...prity dirty and used and engine flush......a lot of people don't recommend these because they recon they can cause leaks.......rubbish although when I put the new oil in there was a large amount found its way to the floor, think...hope I just misses the hole tho lol

there is no part missing Den, read my post above. the broken end will be inside the hose.

Part number will be on the main body, so the lower section.

Not convinced prawn on the Haynes manual the bit that's missing looks to be quite bulky

Ok will look for the part number later also the evaporative emission charcoal canister ticks,.... Is a faulty

Also this missing peace will it cause engine management light to come on

Potentially as it could be allowing un metered air (as I mentioned before) into the engine so the ecu could be compensating for fuel...

Never logged a 1.6 before so I don't know how intelligent the ECU's are on those...
