1.4 TFSi v 2.0 TDi

You can't change a leopards spots! One will like diesel, the other petrol... Personal choice...

It would be better to test drive the differing models and make a choice!


Loving the comments though!!

There is something that fascinates me about the simplicity and power of diesel compression ignition engines. I don't really care that a petrol engine is more refined, can rev the nuts of it or that it runs cleaner. If I could afford a RS3 I'd have one, but I'd still have a diesel too!

I do approx 11k a year which is mainly motorway, so I guess for the sake of it I may aswell go with the 1.4 as I wouldn't see the value for money in a diesel if i get what you guys are saying.

go for the 1.4 mate, you wont be dissappointed! Plus you should be doing about 20-25k miles a year to see a saving with diesel.

Not sure I agree with that, it all depends on the price of the car and various others bits.

I've currently got the diesel and easily get 600miles on a tank for fuel costing me £70ish. I've gone from filling my 118i every week to once a fortnight. If it was me and I had two cars costing the same used to start with, it'd be diesel all day long. Excellent savings on fuel, loads of interest in the used car market and still an excellent drive.

well im just going by what i hear people say. I have a petrol and i do about 18k miles a year and i still dont feel the need for a diesel.

Each to their own I guess, what have you got at the min?

My 118i was so down on on power and really needed working to get the best of it, unfortunately this kept it up in the rev range. The diesel I've got at the min sits at cruising speeds at half the revs and on a run I've seen 700miles.

I'll happily pocket the £120+ a month on fuel for the pleasure too :)

Just filled up after getting 620+ miles for £70 ish on my 1.6tdi, what engine do you have?

I do an 80 mile round commute a day, only reason I have a diesel, I do love it though! Think it goes without saying that anyone doing more than 20k should seriously consider a diesel. It's all about the 1.6tdi in the day and the TTS in the evenings and weekends :)

The 1.6TDi is a pretty a terrible engine though. Slow and loads of reports of poor economy.

I wouldn't use the word terrible, It's not fast, but that's expected. It's built for economy. Certainly is economical for me. Like I say, suits its purpose very well :)
 
I had this petrol vs diesel predicament when I ordered My 62 Plate Black Edition.
Spent alot of time finding info/specs/reviews/people arguing about the 2.0 TDI 170 and the 2.0 TFSI models... all in all it's just a matter of perspective.

In the end I went for the 2.0 TDI 170 because of:
MPG - 60 vs 39
Road Tax - £139 vs £195
Torque - 258 lb/ft @ 1700 RPM vs 207 lb/ft

I wanted something with power yet economical. Other than that I friggin' love my Audi A3! :yum:

what about

I've got a 2.0tfsi & a 1.4tfsi both the same s line spec & the differences if you drive like a normal person are minimal. The 1.4 is quieter & gives much better gas mileage, but you use the gears more. As soon as you want to get on a bit the 1.4 shows just how heavy the a3 is. I'm lucky to get more than 300 miles from a tank in the 2.0 in my 8 mile journey to work, my other half in the 1.4 gets about 380 - 400 miles & the majority of what she does is 2 or 3 mile trips. 2 years ago she had a 2.0tdi courtesy car while hers was being fixed & it doubled the amount of money she spent on fuel. For short journeys you can't beat the smaller petrol engine.
 
2-3 mile trips? You'd be better of getting a push bike.
And a diesel costing double the amount in fuel compared to a petrol on short trips? I highly doubt that. Even my little twin air fiat 500 does the same mpg on the short trips into town as my 2.0 tdi a3 does.
 
Push bikes no good for her to take the kids to school or take her elderly parents shopping or whatever they need to do. And yes the diesel did use twice as much fuel pretty easy to to work out when you go fill the thing up.
