Hi all,

I bought an S3 yesterday and was wondering whether to keep resonated or not? I only want to go non-resonated if I will get a performance increase!! I could consider a decat and keep the resonated system but only if I get a performance increase e.g. lower EGT and improved flow.

Currently I have a Relentless 3 inch downpipe with a 200 cpi Magnaflow sports cat with a 2.75inch Milltek resonated cat back system and was considering chopping out first baffle and replacing it with a piece of pipe or seeing if anyone whated to exchange the centre section on the cheap e.g. carriage only.

When I had the BAM in my MK3 Golf I had a non-resonated, decatted, Jetex system which was 2.5 inch with a 3 inch downpipe and that sounded fierce on throttle but.......

Though the Audi is more refined I do like the sound on throttle but not the done on the long A roads or motorway.

Anyway thoughts and comments appreciated please?

Because of the way the back box is on these Milltek's (for the 8L S3 anyway) they are quiet and not boomy as a non-res system. There was a pic on the forum somewhere where someone had cut open the rear silencer to see what was inside. The perforated pipe goes along the silencer and loops back and goes to the tailpipe. The silencer is doing a lot more than a convensional straight through box.

As S3 Dave said you would probably be dissappointed how quiet the resonated system is.

I went resonated as the non-resonated are far too loud.
The resonated still has a sportier tone than the standard OE exhaust and full boot sounds really nice.

Stop being a gay, I'll tig a piece of 2.75" in place of the resonator for some pennies on Saturday. No performance gain or egt drop from res/non res, especially at modest power levels.

Non res miltek is the best sounding exhaust for an s3 imho.

Organise a national de-resonating day Dave. Fire up the welders!

i was initially dissapointed with my non res it was so tame, but i like it now, it really isnt invasive at all.
With a cat id say go non res without a doubt

Non res on mine and now I've had it 6 months it's certainly louder than when I originally had it fitted. Sounds nice though. I still have the cats and the original downpipe. The badger5 inlet + cone filter is louder I think.

Stop making me jealous boys. might just have to fork out and buy the non res section from ebay and sell mine.

Just buy a 1/2 metre length of 2.75" stainless for £15 off eBay and get your local specialist to weld it in. Would probably cost you an hours labour.

Sounds like a plan, non-res it is lol

I went non resonated and was disappointed at how quiet it was and I am 42, so I ended up fitting a Relentless downpipe and that did make the car sound a bit more meaty with out being boomy inside!

Sadly for me it was never going to sound as good as my old VR6, god I miss having that V6 sound (But not the MPG)

Thats good to know!! I got to admit the sound of a VR is awesome on full chat.

Heres mine:

Cheers sounds sweet, yes I feel the need for non-res in my life now!!!!

Go to be non resonated, the wife couldn't get used to how quite it is even though got a Relentless manifold,
Down pipe and 120 sports cat, nice sound at high revs though, not boomy

Tomorrow, I'll go non resonated. I feel like I am losing my virginity.

Superkarl does the filter of your video have Parkinson's? I heard more shuffling of the camera than of your exhaust.

Whichever mine is... (the one with a baffle / the quieter one) is IMHO better... Biased :racer:

Well guys, I got to say Ben "skills" did an outstanding job, and thanks to Reesy for helping. I am now the proud owner of a non res Milltex system. Sounds awesome, sounds alive, they way it should be.

Am I the only one that thinks the standard exhaust is loud enough - and no it does not have any holes in it! Lol.

And yes that is a milltek resonator and yes it is being used as a backbox..

What restriction?

You nearly shot your beans when it came on boost.
