Hi all,

Has anybody Plasti-dip (spray) painted their window surround chromework while its still on the car.

I have some black insulation tape I'm going to apply temp to see if I like it - if I do I'll spray them up.

I plan to do the front grille too, but this will be removed as I need the headlights out anyway.

Any pitfalls or tips?

Also, a place I don't have to pay £16 a can would be awesome too.

Dan

I've got some plasti dip on order, hoping to do my B8 this weekend. From what I've seen/read, it seems a pretty easy job to do on the car

Awesome.

Please report back with how it went.

I only have a drive so it will have to wait for the good weather!!!!

Dan

PS - Where did you purchase the spray mate?

Or you could vinyl wrap the window strips

Hi Mac

That looks awesome.

I thought about wrapping, but I heard its hard to do on the car yourself without experience.

The plasti-dip sounds fairly simple as long as time is taken to mask off.

Ive read a lot over on audizine about plastidip, and doing the window surrounds, and what they were saying was that it doesnt stay in for long as its difficult to get it to stick properly on the chrome.
My choice would be wrapping it like mac suggested.

ive heard about this plasti dip, but if i was doing window trims id wrap them :)

Anyone know any good sources for getting vinyl to Wrap these?.
wanting to do this to my avant and tried Plasti-dipping but because of where the rubber Seals meet the chrome on the Back ment you couldnt get the overspray / peel your after for it to adhere well.
just cant find much in the way of vinyl tapes on the fle-bay etc to do the job.

I think it's something like boat tape or something like that.

I may forget the plasti-dip idea then and go for vinyl.

I'd paint it, but I want it to be removable.

Dan

Anybody have any close up shots of vinyl wrapped chrome surrounds? Considering vinyl wrapping mine in chrome as it has faded but don't wanna have a visible edge of the vinyl showing if that makes sense?

Hmmmm.

Just ordered my plasti-dip spray. I guess we will see what happens.

i emailed Fonzi a few months ago about this stuff, he replied with "we unfortunately don't ship to the UK or Europe due to the chemicals used". wich sucks as its £350 to dip a whole car!

350 to do a hole?
Doing it your self or paying someone?

The dip sticks well to chrome.
I don't have any chrome window trims but it stuck well to the chrome grill and badge.
To remove was the same as any other surface I've painted.

Really like that, did he cover both the Chrome and Rubber with that do you just have really dark rubber seal's on your doors.

My order hasn't turned up yet so unfortunately I won't be able to do mine this weekend now. I couldn't see a way of getting vinyl to work on the chrome strip on my B8 avant which goes above all the windows and curls around the rear hatch window in one continuous piece. It may be different on the B7. I'm planning on doing the roof rails as well, I've not seen many problems of it not lasting when applied properly but I guess time will tell.

I used plastidip on my grill about 6 months ago, still holding up well, I attempted to do my window trims, but it kept tearing when i took the masking tape off, so I wrapped those, well one side, still got to do the other side :p

I tried to pain the window trims with plasti dip but it's quite hard. I painted the whole grill and that seems to last pretty well.

What exactly is hard about the window trims mate?

My spray arrived today so I need all the tips I can get!!!!

I noted some people peeled the dip off when they pulled the masking tape off, but I plan to run a craft knife round gently first so that shouldn't happen.

Cheers

Dan

its just the a4 as the chrome wraps around the window when the door is closed.

The grill was very easy to do. remove the bumper, remove the grill and paint it on using 4 stages.

I spent 3-4 hours doing the chrome bits but its a bit of a pain just masking up. also if you get a run good luck to try and recover from it as I couldn't.

good luck with it and post it up if you have any success

Will do, slow & steady.

Gonna practice on something first though.

When you mask the area, leave about a inch or so so the dip covers that.
It makes it easier to cut and dip cuts it's self on gaps.

If it does not, just use a sharp knife to help it out.
If you remove the masking tape when the dip is wet it's easier and it will still heal (lack of a better word) it self if a little bit of dip is removed with tape.

Clay bar I'd good for removing over spray.

I know the car is pretty dirty, but you get the idea.

Amazing what you can do with 20 minutes and a bit of this......

So which one???

Gotta go with the chrome gone.... i'm so glad I did mine tbh

Yes mate, just a quick temporary job to make sure I like it before it gets painted permanently.

Only done one side so I can look at the difference.

Very effective for the sake of 20 minutes I reckon.

Think the mind is made up now.

Dan

It seems not mate, posted on another forum and there is somebody of the same opinion as you.

I appreciate all feedback, that's why I did a temporary job on it first.

Dan
