Quattros in the Snow

I'ts great how the Quattro responds to the snow, its a pleasure to see why owning one of these is a must.

You can de tour around the side roads to cut out the main road traffic with confidence.

Gave mine a good workout today in the snow,the grip with good winter tyres on was amazing,so controlable ,i thought i was hannu mikola,lol.Empty wide mountain roads before somebody gets on there high horse,lol

Went out in mine, all I came across on the moors was a few land rover defenders and a fiat panda 4x4, and a couple of 2wd cars that were stuck.

Yeh it just shows how the Quattro is all weather aswell as AWD. Seen a a few Mercs and BMW's struggling

What are they like with summer tyres, I have eagle f1s....

I've taken my old B7 2.0T, a B7 3.2, and now a C6 3.2 out in the snow (all three were Quattro) and all with summer tyres. No problems whatsoever with traction. The handling of a sliding Quattro is also very predictable and easy to control. But remember Quattro doesn't mean you can drive fast. You won't stop or turn any better than any other car on ice.

With snow tyres too you can i cannot recommend them enough,you can steer brake no problem,if by being really aggressive the car slides you just back off the throttle and it pulls back straight,the depth of snow helped too more control in the deeper snow.I think i had more grip than most big proper chelsea tractors,lol as 1 range rover driver found on the news when he hit another car through a wall down into somebodies garden about 15ft below!

i had a mtg to go to in Bournemouth yesterday, so left Reading at 7.30am.. i got as far as Winchester (about 30 miles) before turning round and coming home.

60 mile round trip took 6 hrs.. a couple a code-brown moments on the M3 but other than that she was a very reassuring place to be.

The Quattro is truly amazing - if you're lucky enough to own such an iconic car.

Any Audi quattro is pretty damn good in the snow too - I've owned them for nearly 13 years and never got stuck yet.

P.S. The capital Q is only used on the original Quattro, all other Audis with Haldex or Torsen 4WD systems are "just" quattros...

Just been out and very impressed, didn't feel any wheel spin at all and seemed very composed, had to go looking for deeper snow near home and had no issues. Happy days

sounds like a BMW lol or a merc. I feel sorry for them guys in a BMW even a 1 series can get stuck in the snow on perfectly flat car park lol

I have to say I'm a tad jealous, contemplating a 3.0 tdi Quattro at the moment!

I was thinking about a 3.0 TDi Quattro but if anything I was worried about the fuel bill as they don't do many miles to a tank. I have a 2.0 TDi S-line Quattro and its very bad on fuel compared to my FWD A4

X3 lol it slides but its fun if you have a manual and want to have a bit of fun. the back end will just kick out if you just floor it. but just make sure you counter steer it and do it in style lol.

Don't forget that the undertray can act as a snow scoop and get ripped off in deep snow........................

No fair. Stuck with my 2WD. Interestingly when I did my insurance renewal this year, the quattro version of my car (2.0T FSI) would have been £40 cheaper to insure. Grrr.

haha! I wouldn't usually do it just incase I ended up sat on the pavement with all 4 wheels folded under the car haha, but the car park was that big that even I couldn't get it wrong. Must say, very easy to control by a couple of blips of the throttle and she's off

Am well jealous of all you quattro owners especially in this weather, however, I have been pleasantly surprised at how the FWD 2.0t has been behaving up here in Swedenshire this Winter. I do benefit from having studded Goodyear winter tyres on 16's but the old bus behaves really well in the ice and snow. Would love a quattro of course, but wonder if the running costs would be a bit of a drag, tyres, fuel etc. Has any Forum members done a running cost analysis between the petrol fwd's avant versus quattros with the same engine?....now that would be an anorak question if ever I heard one.....I'll get me coat!

Lol ....dont be jealous, just consider buying one you wont regret it... I have owned a few fwd Audis over the years and had to revert back to a quattro as it just seemed the best option.... this is my 3rd quattro -

Today the weather got worse with the snow getting thicker and had to take a few relatives home who live on hills, the quattro just climbed up no problems...In a nutshell Big Difference..you see, its all weather, summer, Rain , Snow. you can't go wrong. Running costs a bit more but hey...why not...Time goes by when you wonder...Just do it

We hadn't thought of changing, but saw a stunning blue TTS on eBay . The good lady loved it, and as its her day to day chariot, decided to change.
As for the comparison , well the TT is faster, but feels a little skittish. Sure we'll get used to that. Also. Bit more road noise than the A4, but the TTS is sitting on 19" rims as opposed to the 18"s on the A4.

Just got to sell the A4 now!

Just got back from a play in the dark. Empty roads were great fun. Although I have overtaken 4x4's in the snow on summer tyres a couple of years back, I always have winter tyres fitted from late October to about Easter. The sooner this country follows the Germans on winter tyre regs, the better as far as I'm concerned. I won't have to put up with being stuck behind people with summer tyres slipping all over the place.

Loving the smattering of snow we had in NI on friday/saturday. Turns out if you turn the ESP off on the 8l S3 and boot it out of a junction (Really wide road, no traffic for miles) It is a big fan of fishtailing. Biggest grin ive had all year!! The grip is so predictable too, really confidence inspiring and gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. Still doesnt mean you can do ridiculous speeds though but even goin at a snails pace is fun and relatively safe. Much safer feeling than my old Escort Cosworth, which was tail happy but again huge amounts of fun!

There's an interesting post here from a BMW owners point of view. And although I'm aware A4 Quattro's are not the best handling cars, these guys are so blinkered - and very happy to slate me for being an Audi driver!

First snow for me in the 3.0TDI Quattro and I have to say how impressed I am. Even with very worn summer tyres the grip and traction is quite simply amazing. My previous car was a 2wd A4 which continually got stuck in snow and had to be towed in and out of my drive way by a friends tractor! I’ve never known a car to be so poor in the snow. The handling was terrifying and I had got to the stage where I literally dreaded winter coming. The Quattro feels literally like a different vehicle – it’s like driving a sports tank. Overall I can’t recommend it highly enough and will certainly never be going back to 2wd.
