Just fitted an RS4 Rear Sway Bar - WOW!

Ive just asked my mate at TPS for the part prices, so fingers crossed this will all be done this weekend, and poss lowered in a few weeks :icon_thumright:

I got my bits tonight off my mate, £60.65 inc vat :arco:

I went for heavy duty bushes and clips as they were cheaper than the normal ones, the bushes were about 10p cheaper iirc and the clips about £2 cheaper...

part numbers I have are:

8E0 511 409 AL - Stabilizer

8E0 511 327 A - bushes x2

8E0 511 439 - clips x2

should get mine on by the weekend at the latest all being well, so fingers crossed I notice the improvment.

original post from Ricardesty stated the following parts:
2no A8AO 511 439 Clip @ 4.16 ea + vat
1no A8EO 511 409 AL Stabilizer Bar @ £53.77 ea + vat
2no A8EO 511 327 D Y34 Mounting Bush @ 2.44 ea + vat
4no AN 101 277 07 Z21 Bolt Hex @ 0.64 ea + vat (although can use old ones)

Above/later post from M7R states:
8E0 511 409 AL - Stabilizer
8E0 511 327 A - bushes x2
8E0 511 439 - clips x2

Any reason for the slight change in part numbers for the bushes (added 'D Y34')?
Don't want to start this job and not have the right bits to finish it.....

You know, before I read this thread a few times I was convinced my 2.0T Quattro cornered as flat as ****, now I can feel it leaning and its doing my head in !!

Ricard's numbers are slighty wrong, they shouldnt have the "A" at the start, all B6 and B7 part numbers that are for those chassis only "ie not used on multiple chassis" should start "8E0"

my bushes are supost to be heavy duty ones, as my mate said there was 2 sets, normal and heavy duty, and the heavy duty ones where a few pence cheaper so I went for them

I might get the bar on tonight if I get chance, failing that friday night it WILL be on.

Thanks for that Mr M7R, let us know how you get on - both fitting it and with the results.....

So can someone please CONFIRM the exact list of parts needed to do this job!! and anyone know if i will need anything different with my 3.0 tdi quattro?

my numbers are correct they are taken off the parts bags.

i dont see why they wouldnt fit yours tbh, its a quattro so the same running gear as a S4 / RS4 pretty much..

Straightforward swap.Mines been done about 8 months now. It's also a 3.0 tdi quattro.

you can if you want re-use the clips as they are the same part number... also the bushes are the same number, but its never a wise idea to re-use used rubber bushes

I have my car in the garage atm for new discs and to be lowered, so now would be the ideal time to do this mod.

Questions though, mine is not a Quattro, would this still be worth doing and if so, can I use the part numbers above?

Many thx

Thanks mate, just told the garage the part numbers.
Also getting it lowered 30 mil, so should have a different car come Friday. :arco:

I'll post pics when I can. :icon_thumright:

Hi can someone please give me a concrete answer regarding the RS4 rear arb thickness . Ice just got what I was told was a rs4 rear arb and it measures 20mm . I was told by the chap I got it from that it's a rs4 arb and that the ss+ had 22 mm and the normal rs4 has 20mm. Is this correct and what are people fitting when doing this mod . Is it worth changing from my s line arb to this so called 20mm rs4 one?

Can't remember the thicknesses but yes, change your s-line to the RS4 one! It's easy to see the difference when you have them side-by-side. I think the RS4 one is 20mm and believe the S-Line is 18mm.

It's made a load of difference, only problem is my rear tyres are approaching their worn limit so I can't use it to it's maximum yet.

Cheers anyone confirm theve used the rs4 20mm arb instead of the 22mm apparently there the same price and both rs4 ones . But I bought mine used for £20 thinking there was only one thickness for the rs4 . I just don't want to fit a 20mm if the 22 is far better . Can someone who has the 20mm rs4 version confirm it's still far better. Cheers

Yep, definitely is. You won't know the difference if you drive like a Sunday driver but I suspect from your posts that you like to put your foot down :)

There was a thread ages ago which mentioned a different sized bar and caused massive confusion. I got the RS4 bar (part numbers on other threads). I'm pretty sure it's 20mm and not even sure the 22mm actually does exist.

Anyone done this on a B6? i know they are largely the same car, but you never know?

Sooooooo many people. You will not regret it mate.

Hi guys, can I get some advice on this please?
This guide says to use 8E0 511 327 A - bushes x2

But every other guide I can see out there says to use the B version of that bush. Is there a difference? I'm asking because the guys I've got fitting my bar are saying it doesn't fit in the bush....

Just had it confirmed by Audi, the part number for the bushes posted up by M7R are WRONG for this 22mm bar... re-reading his post he even said he went with them because they were cheaper. Why didn't I spot that before.

" The 'B' bush was revised part number and changes to 'D' now.

A fits 18/20 mm bars & D fits 22 mm bars. "

Great.

I think I used A as per the thread and they were tight but fitted. I wonder if that's a potential problem brewing for those of us who used the "A" part?

As it was a little bit cooler today, I've backed the Quattro onto my ramps and swapped my standard rear sway bar for an OE RS4 version......

Here's how they compare off the car (bearing in mind the top one looks loads thicker in real life!):

And on it:

arb2.jpg

And boy does it make a difference in corners! She sits a lot flatter, and turns in far better. No surprises there to be honest - I fitted something similar on my last car - and it came with a warning label cos it transforms the handling that much:beerchug:
If you wanna have a go yourself, here's what you need from your Audi Stealer:

2no A8AO 511 439 Clip @ 4.16 ea + vat
1no A8EO 511 409 AL Stabilizer Bar @ 53.77 ea + vat
2no A8EO 511 327 D Y34 Mounting Bush @ 2.44 ea + vat
4no AN 101 277 07 Z21 Bolt Hex @ 0.64 ea + vat (although can use old ones)

Total 79.96 inc Vat

Here's a quick how to:

You'll need:
a 13mm ratchet spanner and extensions
a 16mm ratchet spanner and extensions (for top bolt on arb drop link)

Removing

Remove rear underbody trim - where applicable.

Cabriolet models only

 Remove rear diagonal strut

Vehicles with 2 rear silencers

- Undo rear silencer bracket bolts and alloy system to hang loose.

Vehicles with heavy-duty suspension

Remove stone deflector from trapezium link.

All vehicles (continued):

 Remove bolts -1-.

Remove bolts -2-. Counterhold joint with open-end spanner (although mine didn't need this)

 Remove bolts -3-.

 Remove anti-roll bar with bushes.

arb3.jpg

Installing:

Rubber bush must make contact with collar -arrow- on anti-roll bar.

arb4.jpg

Fit bolts -3- and initially tighten hand-tight only.

 Fit and tighten bolts -2-

 Fit and tighten bolts -1-

Lower vehicle onto its wheels and bounce suspension several times.

Tighten bolts -3- to specified torque.

Vehicles with heavy-duty suspension

Install stone deflector and tighten bolts

Vehicles with 2 rear silencers

Re - install and align exhaust system

Cabriolet models only

 Install rear diagonal strut.

All vehicles (where applicable):

 Install rear underbody trim.

Enjoy!

All over this!! think its the only thing that lets it down really, bit of a loose rear end (if there wasnt a better phrase for it)

weekend task!! :)

I paid tps £55.80 plus vat for the arb yesterday ..just rang with the part no. And they gave the trade price .. Cheaper than Audi .fitting at the weekend....

Cheers.

anybody think it's an issue?

The bar is designed to share load between the two sides of the rear suspension hence the more torsionally rigid bar tightens up the rear end. Over constraint of the bar at the chassis mounts limits the bar from transferring load to the opposite side of the car thus not allowing the bar to function as it should. The bar should be able to rotate in its mounting points.

Having the bush grip the bar too tightly will restrict its movement and will inherently stiffen the suspension, but not in the way its supposed to.

Thanks mate. That's exactly the technical explanation that justifies the nagging doubt in my mind. I've felt that there was something not 100% but having changed all front arms at the same time wasn't sure if something's amiss there.
For the sake of a fiver or so i'll change them over soon.

Hi guys, sorry another query about the bushes for this job.
Fitted the bar yesterday (8E0 511 409AL - 22mm) with bushes (8E0 511 327D) and clamps (8A0 511 439) but before fitting tried bushes in clamps and when fitted the hole in the bush goes oval.
Fitted bar, bushes and clamps to the car and bushes are spreading out the side of the clamps. Has anyone else noticed this? Torqued clamp bolts to 25Nm and link bolts to 45Nm.
Didn't take pics as it was 9 last night when i finished, will try pictures today. All part numbers are correct and checked against parts before fitting. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, Just resurrecting this thread and some really useful info on here.

Want to change the RARB soon to the 22mm RS4 type, would like the improved handling for little money.

Can someone just confirm the correct part numbers for me as there is a little confusion over 20/22mm and heavy duty bushes. Mine is a 03 2.5tdi quattro sport avant and if anyone could recommend a good supplier as mine is the usual "stealer"!

Parts:

8E0 511 409 AL - Stabilizer

8E0 511 327 D - bushes x2

8E0 511 439 - clamps x2

Thanks

after Reading all of this it seems like "The thing to do" just wondering would the RS4 ARB fit a 2WD? is there any difference or are all RARB's the same? if someone could clear this up for me it will give me something to do this weekend :)

I bought the RS4 RARB and it's 22mm:

S-line = 18mm
S4 = 20mm
RS4 = 22mm

I think with the B6's the S4 and RS4 were the same (not sure if they were 20 or 22mm though?)

Also you can reuse the links and the stabalisers, you just need the new ARB, clamps and bushes.

Audi main dealer is about £100 for all parts inc VAT, you won't find it cheaper anywhere else

All RARBs are interchangable, quattro, 2wd, diesel, petrol etc etc. You just want the RS4 one
