Hi,

I've just brought a 2009 a3 black edition, what is the best way to go about getting a spare key cut/programmed etc?

Ideally I want to avoid the dealers due to their ridiculous prices!!

Cheers

Steve

I messed around with my key a few weeks ago having the car for only 4 days and it immobalised my car :( got it towed to audi, my key became deffective or something like that and i didnt have a spare. It cost me £249 for a new key and for it to be reprogrammed. Just an idea of how much audi charge lol. This was 3 days ago.

Problem is that there is a 'secret' code in the immobiliser chip inside the key which Audi Germany hold. A dealer has to get that code from Audi before they can program a new chip. The chip can only be programmed once so any key off ebay will not work.

You can get a suitable key off ebay and program the transponder to lock/unlock but not start.

You may be able to find a specialist independent who has the equipment to unlock the 'secret code' and therefore produce another key for you but you are looking at £130 - £150 minimum.

The only people I'd trust with key information is Audi themselves .. ;)

Depends where your located as I know of someone local to me

I'm based in Bedworth, just outside Coventry...

Where is your guy located?

google theres a few good locksmiths out there
some can even come to your car if you lost the key
and cut reprogram there and then at less cost than audi

my pay uses them he sells cars and always sells with 2 keys
he says they do there job well
he had his key box nicked last year 34 sets of keys went.
1 day and they were all sorted.

I recently bought a 8L with only 1 key, I got hold of a 2nd hand key for free, bought a blank blade off ebay which offered cutting by picture for 5 quid, bought a replacement chip off ebay for 6 quid and will get it programmed eventually for 30 tops but for the time being at least it will unlock my car should my good key get stuck inside (again).

Not sure for newer Audi's but I can buy a complete brand new key for 40 off ebay then have it coded, still a bucket load cheaper than Audi.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info.

I contacted a local locksmith who wants £200 and said even he would have to go through Audi!

I'll have a look on ebay for a blank and cut for now..

Cheers
