Been getting rattles at about 1800-2000rpm driving and idling
its getting annoying now and can't seem to find where it's coming from
could it be the turbo bearings? It is howling
It's like a tinny metallic rattle
Cheers

I've tried to look for that and doesn't seem to be that, it's deffinetly coming from somewhere around engine, it only used to do it now and again but it's all the time now, driving me crazy

I'd get your flywheel and clutch chekced as that usually makes a rattle when it's on its way out.. If it full goes then it can take the gearbox with it if you driving at the same time...

It's more of a tinny metal sound like a heat shield, clutch is holding good and no juddering
my dads flywheel is going on his passat and it deffinetly doesn't drive like that, but thanks for reply

Thats interesting as I have this now aswell on 1 of our dsg's, I'm due to remove the turbo this week & fit a different hybrid.

i had similar rattle was convinced it was flywheel related turned out to be arch liner rattling on strut would only do it on idle !

My tfsi gets a rattle metallic sounding like marbles in a can between 2800 and 3000 rpm. If I hold it between the revs it rattles? It must be something exhaust related down pipe maybe?

I had a similar noise when my gearbox changed, ended up being a small metal cover plate to the flywheel not seated properly.. Can access it underneath with the lower pan removed

I too have this noise, I have also just replaced gearbox and clutch!
Boon, how do I seat the cover plate correctly???

You should have PM Martin but just to recap...

From underneath the engine with the pan removed look towards the gearbox at the rear of the engine about halfway up (next to turbo almost) is a small cover running up & down. Has a bolt/torx at the bottom and slips/slots in the top... Mine needed a little bend to stop it catching the flywheel and replaced

I had an annoying one, was only at about 1100rpm. Turned out to be the fuel line in a channel in the chassis rattling away. Filled it with foam and not heard it since.

Heard about this one, did it sound like it was coming from the engine bay?

Sounded like it it was coming from different places because it resonated throughout the chassis. Sometimes i thought it was around the glovebox, sometimes the drivers footwell, the gear knob, behind the dash. Was a nightmare to locate. Once I took off the plastic guard underneath and found where it was it was obvious.
Check it out, even if its just to rule it out as a possibility.
Under the drivers side floor pan, there is a boxed in channel with small rubber access points. Fuel line runs along on the inside. Get someone to rev until you hear the noise, if its coming from there you can either shove a load of sponge in there to surround the line and suppress the noise or spray or a bit of expander foam in there.

Hope that helps. I hate rattles so much. If I ever crash my car it will be because I got my head stuck under the console shouting "what the hell is that rattling noise!?"
