Hi, Just noticed today what I think looks like a bit to much Mayonnaise in the oil filler cap. Just wondered what other peoples look like? I know there will be some and this is normal. Mine was covering the filler cap and some around the edge of the neck. Thanks in advance.

Its the car saying stop using me for short journeys and get me on a run. It's common at this time of year due to the colder weather. A 30 miles fast run will clear it.

I had mine off today as the oil needed a top up and it was clean.
Car is MY12 and on 8K miles, does mostly short runs around town.

I have seen this on previous cars and it wasnt an issue though. Its oil vapour and moisture condensing at the high point in the engines as it rises.

If you had it on your dipstick then thats a different issue of course.

Hi thanks, yeah I have been doing short runs recently. Dipstick is clean, so hopefully sounds ok. Cheers

Bit of a hijack but how do you guys know when to top it up? I've always left my oil until the annual service but should I be checking regularly? Or would I know if it's running low somehow?

should always give it a good run now and again, although a small amount of oil "condensation" is no big deal, do what you can to keep it minimal

Its critical to check the dipstick every couple lof weeks as oil consumption can vary wildly between cars.
It should never get so low that the warning light comes on.

High revving stuff can need oil every week, HONDA VTechs etc are like this.

I have topped mine up twice in 8K miles.

As said, it's normal to get some at this time of year. Give the cap and neck a good clean to remove the residue and then check it again after a long run, should remain clean. The fact your dipstick is okay should mean it's not so bad, if you can get a look at your coolant check to seee there's no thin oil film on it, clean coolant is also a good sign.

Thanks - what oil do you recommend? Shall I just pop to Audi and get what they use when they last serviced my car?

Yep, ask AUDI what they used last time and pick 5ltrs up from a motor factors/Halfords etc..
At least then you will always have it on hand.

I am sure I read somewhere that if you are on a variable service regime and you run your oil levels low on a regular basis then the intervals are much reduced.

Bad for the car, bad for the wallet..

Cheers

Why is it bad if there is a tiny bit on the dip stick? I'm seeing this on mine and again only doing short runs I think I need to take her in a long run?

Happens.. Some attributed to poor quality engine oil.
Try taking the oil filler cap off and letting the car run for 20 mins to get rid of moisture in the engine's internals.

It's definitely not poor quality oil so it must be the short runs I'm doing, only 10 miles a day at the moment

I am doing 15miles-ish per day (2 short runs) no dip stick residue.
Never seen this on modern cars.

To the hijacker - I top up my oil every 2000 miles I use 1 ltr.

mate personally i change mine every 6 months wether i done 5000km or only 2 -3000kms keeps the engine happy
