hi all

i want to do some mods to my a3 but i have this little nig in the back off my head saying its not worth spend all that money as the car has 131000 miles on the clock but it drives like new should i just save more money and get a new car our spend it on mods

any ideas
 
will was going to add s3 rear bumper side skirts and change my front bumper and grill then remap lower it anti roll bars filter ect what i worried is i spend this money make it the way i want it then i blows up on me waste off money spent on it you now

I would sit down with a piece of paper and do 2 columns, mod and new.

Put in the advantages of modding in one column and the same in buying an s3.

Will you still mod the s3?
If so, mod what you've got, especially if its a good motor as mentioned.
IMHO of coarse. ;-)
 
Mods can come off and be sold easily, especially S3 parts, very high demand. I see why not. What engine have you got? If you're thinking like that then owning the car is a waste of money as well even worst buying a brand new car and moding is the biggest waste of money in my opinion.
 
The age old problem this one. For me, it depends on how long you're likely to keep the car. If you intend to keep it for years then costs of modding are spread out and you get to enjoy them for a while. If you're thinking of selling it in a few months, don't bother.
 
Don't waste your money and risk looking foolish trying to make your car into something it is not. This Forum is chock a block full of folk who I assume have an inferior complex about their basic banger faffing about adding bits and bobs from higher specification models yet finishing up with something in-between thatn is mobviously a compromise. Surely best to wait until you can afford the proper thing.

It all depends on how long you intend to keep the car, mods will not add value to a car, in fact some will even make it worth less as buyers will be either not interested in it at all or they may want to return the car to std.

I can understand retro-fitting options that were available from the factory as when you buy a s/h car you have to compromise on the spec at times, but these retro-fits will invariably add no value to the car… they may make it more desirable though.

A properly serviced and well treated engine will go well over 200k miles, drive it everywhere like you stole it and you are asking for big bills (and points).
 
It's dependant on if you want to personalise your car or do a stage 1 or 2 tune and leave everything looking standard.

In that case get a s3.

Or you could go the full on lowered, wide arches, new wide wheels etc, etc.

Went from bog standard to lowered, nistune ecu, stage 1 tune/ map,18" wheels and car PC running data scan software on board cameras, just went mad. Lol

How much would you spend extra for a s3?

Could that be enough for engine forged for big HP?
 
Cars are money pits which ever route you go down at the end of the day aren't they. The thing is you are the one that lives with it everyday so make your car how you want it and have it how it makes you happy since your the one who owns and drives it. I'd consider the full cost of getting a new car too, fuel, insurance, day to day running costs.
I could afford an S3 but instead I've got an A3 diesel, it suits my life better so I'm going to make it how I want it.

As above mate map it and get modding over time if the motor is sweet and you look after it that mileage is nothing stop worrying and get started
 
The other thing to remember is you know your car, you know what you've had done to it. You could buy a car with 40k on the clock and you could end up with a money pit get modding I say if the car feels good

At 130,000 miles everything's bedded in nicely, upping the power at this stage of its life is a recipe for disaster IMHO - something expensive is bound to dislike the new found urgency & break.

I disagree, completely. I've never owned a car with less than 115k miles on and all have been tuned. All have been maintained as well, which is the difference and the most pertinent point. If you change the oil every 5-6k and regularly change filters and keep an eye on temps then there is no harm in upping the power. Nailing any car from cold will kill it.
 
It's not just the engine thats done the miles though. Any car with over 100k miles shows it through the wear on the interior let alone the suspension. The engine should go on for ever in theory but it's if everything else can keep going too....
 
hi sorry for the late replay have read all your thoughts and i would say very thing you have said is very true to consider, life of the car is this it is a 2005 reg it was an Audi fleet car and i am the third owner but the first private owner brought it with 129,000 on the clock and drives like new you put your foot down and power hits right away not turbo lad nothing. full service history like i said i am just worried that i do mods and then engine goes bang, waste of money. will at the end off the year i have got about 8000 to spend on a car and my wife keeps saying a seat Leon fr tdi but i just don't now.
 
I would prefer an a3 over the seat any day mate but each to there own
 
yeah but i have looked on auto-trader for the money i have the cars and still high millage so all i am getting a high reg car but with high millage if that makes since
 
I see where you coming from mate I bought my 56plate s line with 110.000 on the clock apart from putting a turbo on it I am more than pleased with it but if you'd be happier going for lower miles seat then go for it from what I know it's all same running gear in all in the name really same as the soda tag eh
