Hi everyone, I'm hoping to remove my Symphony II and retrofit a nexus 7 tablet into my 2004 A3 8P and was wondering if any of you could give me some advice in doing so?

Thanks

As in, remove the Symphony II radio and replace it with a aftermarket amplifier, pre amp, source selector and have a nexus 7 android tablet in-place of symphony

There is a guy who has fitted an ipad into the centre console of a B5 RS4. Think it's on audisrs.com or just google B5 RS4 ipad and it brings up a video. Not exactly what your after but it might help.

Head over to mightycarmods YouTube, I'm sure they fitted a tablet. But tbh it's better to just fit an rnse headunit

As said its a big job as it would require you to amplify all speakers/subwoofers and connecting a 3.5mm jack to RCA out on your amp. You would need a 3.5mm to 4xRCA cable seen it on ebay about £6-8, which would allow your nexus 7 to output the audio>amp?>speakers.

Apart from that usual wiring of speakers/sub to amp and powering the amp, not impossible but takes time and effort plus knowing how your gona mount the tablet e.g fiberglass custom fascia?

But i dont see it as a good idea in my opinion, sticking to RNSE or prob a cheaper alternative such as aftermarket headunit is better.

I know adding RNSE would probably be easier, but I think the functionality of an Android tablet would be better? Google maps navigation, I could add an unlimited data sim so that would let me use internet radio, netflix, sync music to the tablet over wifi when I pull into the drive. How much would a RNSE retrofit cost approximately?

RNSE (G) latest edition is about £350-400 for good mint condition ones, ? If you check as said above MightyCarMods on YouTube they did the iPad fit its the same process see the video and decide what you want to go for.

And yh it would be great to have a tablet fitted but again needs time/creativity and a few mods, but am looking forward to it to see what you would do.

Where can you get the latest RNSE for that price from ?

If you search eBay specially the auction section you could bid for some mint ones if not then have to go for the forum members here. My bother bought one for £390 free P&P last week, so shouldn't be a problem finding one.

get yourself a Pioneer unit...
bluetooth handsfree calling as well as bluetooth streaming
Music and video from SD cards, ipods, aux, CD, MP3CD, DVD, radio,
also supports Sat nav and can add a reverse camera and a tv tuner pretty easily
best thing the units brand new are about £500

Personally I would say that is very cheap. A little too cheap if you ask me. eBay isn't the most reliable of places to buy those units. Can never truly guarantee if it came from a legit source or not. You just need to read the sticky about stolen RNS units.

I also have to agree with Ash about the pioneer units they are pretty sweet for the money.

Im going to be attempting a mod sometime this unit to incorporate my iPad2 into the car whilst keeping the RNS present. I also have a guy building a Raspberry PI into the car that will be controlled using original car controls. Will allow for XBMC, DashCommand (OBD information on screen), SatNav etc etc.

If you insist on doing this, id recomend you buy the toshiba thrive / at100 or similar. It features a replacable back cover/battery, and full size usb/sd hdmi/mini usb.

However, I recently tried the android based asteroid parrot media system and the android platford let it down big time over a regular head unit. If you want to go this route, carputer would be the best option imo.

Some time ago there was a post on this forum of an A3 with integrated ipad, came in place of RNSE/Symphony...

DashCommand is a software used on iPhones and iPads?
Be interested to see how they get it working on XBMC.

I almost finished my install, just waiting on a keyboard and small USB cable.

Keep up to date with this mate.
Really interested.

All this is very interesting..iPad into car is pretty cool I must say.
the above mentioned pioneer unit...anyone know the model?
be cool to keep rns yet install iPad into top of dash and just flip it up to use....?

Any further progress with this? What pioneer head it is it that was mentioned above?

Holy bump, but what happened with this project?

with every car eventually they age and everything that can be done has usually been done except the esoteric mods. I think we have hit the limit on mods but always nice to see the attempts at new stuff. I have to admit, this forum supplied major upgrades to the 8P over the years. Some really smart people on here
