Greetings

Ventured over from the A3 section as myself and a friend are after some help with the 3.0 V6 TDI.

Basically is anyone in the South Wales area who owns an A5 3.0 TDI V6 on or around the 07/57 plate mark who would allow us to take some logs of the car with VCDS?

Or does anyone on here have VCDS and can give us some logs of MAF, Boost, Lambda readings too

Basically we are trying to track a possible fault with the car (poor mpg) but we don't have any standard figures to compare it against :(

We've done some logs already but the figures are confusing us mainly because they read completely different to my A3.

If anyone can help it would be most appreciated :)

Thanks
Rhys

Rhys,

i have access to a 11reg 245 car?

whats wrong with the MPG? The 3.0tdi's aint great mate.

Hi mate

Well in standard form it seems to be fine. My mate Huw can get upto 40+mpg on a decent run.

However we mapped it and it dropped considerably! Ive done a couple of V6's, mostly in Touerags and a Q7 and the mpg has improved significantly on each one.

Priot to mapping the thermostat was changed as it was never reaching operating temperature on the gauge but Huw did not report a significant difference in MPG which you would expect if the car was running cool all the time

We think its a sensor but without info to compare it too we are a little lost :(

What gets me is the MAF readings. The ecu obviously has a specified amount but when logging it never seems to quite hit the requested?? We have even tried a new MAF with the same result

Its been smoke tested and no leaks were found. We have done various full throttle logs and the turbo isnt working overly hard

When the smoke test was done the mechanic made a comment that he thought the lambda reading was a little low but again we have no data to compare it too

If you could grab a couple of full throttle runs that would be really helpful!! :)

Who did the map? This will be a EDC17 Tri-core and being 11plate it might have been a TP car as well. So guessing you didn't buy a cable from EBay and do it yourself.

Have you looked at what it thinks the ambient air temp is? Does the car smoke under load? Do you have soot on the rear? Is it as bad if just cruising trying not to use boost? What was changed in the map? Just boost and fuel or smoke tables and injector timing?

It might be the car but has it been ok on fuel since the remap?

The car in question is a 57 plate so no EDC17 Tricore on these ;) Well not the tricore model anyway Its T8UPS who has access to the 11 plate car. It was flashed with a CMD Flashtec box via OBD :)

No smoke from the rear under any condition. Cruising is slightly better than booting it.

Don't know the entire ins and outs as I don't write the maps myself but I know it wouldn't have been just boost and fuel as that's not the way to do things!

As in my previous posts I have done several of the V6's and none of them get worse on fuel after a remap. The car is currently back to standard to ascertain what might be wrong. Its when the remap was on the MPG got significantly worse (approx 50-100 miles per tank). Prior to the remap it was achieving between 400 and 440miles to a tank

Ambient temperature is one thing I've not looked at though so will have a look at that; thanks

What do you class as "ain't great"? Since I bought it I regularly get anything between 39 and 46mpg the higher obviously being achieved on longer runs with motorways involved. The odd thing is I'm sure it's better after first starting in the morning. After I stop and then start again I'm sure mpg is worse. But it could just be all in my mind desperately clutching at straws!

By the way it's my car that's being the problem. Rhys has gone above and beyond expectations to find the problem.

I've come from high power (all 400bhp - 550bhp) jap petrols but a decent map has always improved mpg under normal driving conditions, boot it of course and you can forget decent mpg but just driving in built up areas or cruising on the motorway has usually seen quite impressive increases in mpg. My A5 went backwards, it got worse mpg in all conditions, I'm thinking it could possibly be the car more than the map but fair play to Rhys he's determined to find what's causing the issue.

Real top notch service, would thoroughly recommend him :)

I've got a 3.0TDI A5, if you tell me how to do the logging i can do it at some point next week (car is at the stealers till monday :( )

Ok so its the EDC16... Do you have the file or did they load it for you? Quite a lot of the earlier cars didn't need anything other than the LDR increasing as the additional fuel is already there. Were the other cars the same software version I know of at least 7? or just the same type of car?

It could still be harware and something that's causing the over fueling but if the car was ok before the remap and I would be looking at the map, unless you have been really unlucky with a sonsor going down.

Its EDC17 just not tuning protected. couple were same software version so i know the issue isnt with the map otherwise I wouldnt offer it. Equally every map is written starting from the cars original file. No copy and paste going on here

Anyone got a standard car they can log so i can compare?? :) trying to work out whats throwing a hissy fit

So if you put it back you stock do you get bad fuel economy still? Is this a case of a car that's happy standard but something is getting out of bed when it pushed? Or have you just been unlucky and something has gone since the map was put on...

Back standard and it appears to be happy again.

The weird thing we noticed was when remapped there didn't feel to be any more top end grunt, low end was noticeably more powerful, especially in the low gears ( i assume it's normally torque limited low down in early gears) but top was hard to see any difference.

But what i would say is the damn thing is so smooth It's gonna be hard to tell unless you're talking big increases top end.

After tuning, the overall sound of the car changed for the better and turbo definitely spooled up quicker (could hear it more to) It was still extremely smooth.

If it wasn't for the obvious drop in mpg i'd definitely be a happy camper. Let's be honest, low end is where an increase is most useable. I've had cars with stacks of top end, to use it you chance. Breaking the law so what's the point. It's as if something isn't quite working as it should when tuned, something doesn't like the higher tuning. Either that or these things just don't react in the same way as my previous cars which were all turbo petrols.

I'm hoping it's something that can be tracked down and replaced or map tweaked to compensate :)

I do indeed.. Getting the car back Monday evening so might get a chance to do the logs when I get home from picking it up.

Cool!

Can you log
Maf - specified and actual
charge pressure control - specified and actual
intake air temp
engine coolant temp
lambda

If yours is setup the same way as Huws then you can only access these through advanced measuring blocks under the engine control module

Can you do some full throttle runs in 3rd gear from 1500rpm to the redline??

Appreciate your help :)

Thats the same thing we are finding with Huws A5; requested NEVER matches specified this happens in both standard and remapped form

You able to do some more logs of the list i posted above?

Thanks :)

I have a 2012 3.0TDI and i have got just over 48 mpg on a steady 15 mile run to work, it has not been remapped.

do you all drive with slippers on? my overall average on my a6 3.0 tdi (asb engine) is 31mpg :)

When you said it has been mapped did you write the map yourself? From what you have said about the topend it sounds like an eco map, What maps did you change?

Is the MAF genuine? How old is it? Have you put a multimeter on it?

If you still can't work it out you can email me the .ori and .mod map and I will look at them for you to see if you have made any silly mistakes.

map is written by a chap with 20 years experince of tuning VAG diesels and has done lots 3.0's, all of which have gone better than Huw's. we dont offer eco remaps lol

i cant remember if Huw bought a genuine MAF but no we havent put a multi meter across it

what im asking is, is if any one has got logs of the MAF in a standard car
