Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

They're pretty much the only ones on the market I'm aware of. Are you going to mount the joints in parallel?

Kinda like this:

Triangle_205-309_Gr_A_ou_F2000.jpg

Nah, I did consider it, but it side-loads the rose joints noticeably under braking/acceleration. My plans to run the rose joints at the same angles they are on the IDF ones, but they'll be a 2 piece design, with a straight tube from the front rose joint to the ball-joint (which will be a 3/4" spherical bearing and a machined 'pin' to go into the hub to space the ball joint down). Then there will be a second piece going from the rear rose joint to meet the side of the first piece with a bolted joint that allows some pivoting. So the front rose joint will pretty much only adjust camber, and the rear one will pretty much only adjust castor.

that's how I understood Robins design yes Sam, something similar.

he did have some really nice solid work's Mock-ups of them also. I'm sure once we both have more time we'll carry on with the idea. Sometimes life gets in the way though!

What you need it my wheels, even rarer but not quite as beautiful and imaginably better on track.

Pierre should swap the 18's with me.

Baxter, you cut to the core of me...

Best see if Pierre wants the Rotas then haha :p

pft the Rota`s are better than heavy silly Audi wheel

Within the context of performance; probably. But Prawn is clearly missing the way his car used to look but still wants 17" wheels for performance, he can have 90% of the looks with 90% of the performance with my wheels :)

Im afraid Jason is right Jardo, the Avus are nice, but they're not even a patch on the rotas, which are never going anywhere, because they're perfect :)

Its a track car not a poncy showmobile. Moar aggressive wheels please.

I'd love to have the budget for lots of really nice track wheels, but I don't, so I just go round gathering up all the cheap half decent wheels I can find :)

TT comps were a result though, I've liked them for years, but didn't consider them thinking they would be too heavy.

When I looked into it though, it turns out they're Forged wheels, no cast, and the backs of the spokes are hollowed out too.

Weight wise, they're actually my second lightest set of wheels!

The Rotas are 8.2Kg per rim I believe, the TT comps are 9.8Kg, Oz SuperT's are 10.2kg, and S3 rims are about 12.5kg. The old Ronal TT's were 13.2kg per rim!

Makes the TT comps seem a pretty good find :)

Well you've inspired me. I've bought a AGU engine to re build if it's in good condition. I may need to pick your brains on what parts to buy for it!

Excellent!

Soon the whole world will realise that High CR Large port engines are the way forward, and AGU prices will rocket and I'll sell off all my parts and become a millionaire :)

On a more serious note though, good call :) , 9.5:1 CR, the head, it all adds up to something that's more efficient than what you have currently.

Bang some 20mm drilled rods in there, run a flex hone down the bores, and some new rings, and you're good to go :D unless youre going for big bhp and 8K, in which case the head will need attention!

Exactly the reason why I've decided to "improve" my a3.
Got a list longer than my arm, have just got to gather the money to make that list shrink, mine will be a slow and steady project.

Thankyou prawn for the inspiration

Ive said it already, but THIS ^^^^^^^ car is fooking AWESOME, i knew it was gonna be quick, its so much quicker than i thought tho, the only car ive ever been in that i can compare the A3 to is a 6R4 metro, and i mean in everyway, the buckets, roll cage, the sound and then the way its trying to find grip, but best of all, everyone knows a 6R4 is quick, no one expects an A3 to be quick, its Awesome and a total credit to you dude :)

It was great to meet you, BigAl and Jenny today, thanks again for dinner that was lovely

Cheers Phil, good to meet you too mate :) glad to see you're not grooming Jardo as we first thought, but I am a little worried now that he may be trying to groom you! Haha.

Was a good day, and I'm glad you liked the car. Was a shame it was such miserable weather and we find get a proper run! Wil have to meet up again before I head home :)

Oh man finally got to the end after 2 weeks of reading

Superb read and its helped me fill in so many blanks, sent me in the right direction for my own build / rebuild.

Already picked up and AGU head / Relentless v3 etc lol!

i will defo be keeping an eye on this thread from now on.

Just a couple of questions as always:

any make of pistons to avoid?

how come i dont see many of you guys running uprated cooling systems (Oil / water) those of you with 100% increase in power levels have gotta be producing increased heat levels?

that will do for now :)

epic read

Paul

Depending on your power goals, stock pistons are absolutely fine. Many people still run stock pistons at 450bhp.

Don't go low compression whatever you do, if you've got an S3, i'd say a set of AGU 9.5:1 CR pistons would be preferable.

Cooling wise, I run a 16 row mocal oil cooler to keep the oil cool, and I fitted a brand new standard rad when the new engine went in, but otherwise, it's absolutely fine!

I'm fairly sure Tuffty and welly both ran standard cooling systems at 400bhp+ as well! The stock system seems very over engineered.

Sure Doug, it's a 16 row mocal oil cooler core, with the mocal press fit clipless fittings and an 80 degree mocal thermostatic sandwich plate.

Just looked back through the thread and found these bits of info from the install:

Ignore the bits about the PSF cooler, that's still on my shelf and not fitted!

Mocal 16 row oil cooler, 80degree stat built into the sandwich plate, all hose and fittings, and a 7 row PSF cooler, all for 140 brand new :)

Got the cooler mounted:

Vent holes cut in the arch liner for air flow, and meshed to protect it:

Made up a simple lower bracket in stainless to hold the cooler rigid:

Then got the mounting finished and bolted up:

Did a tiny bit more tonight;

Got the sandwich plate mounted and the filter back on, which gave me a chance to measure up for the hoses I need.

Cut them to length, then pressed the fittings into the hose with the aid of some boilling water and a firm grip:

These are apparently a mocal 'no clips' fitting. You just heat the hose in boilling water, then press it on with great force. The supplier did say that many people clamp them as a secondary measure too, so I decided to be safe rather than sorry.

Cheers dude :)

credit where credit is due!

I am running a 300hp bam motor in the mgzs180 body shell (uber light and handles like a civic :)

like i said i have the agu head which i intend to rebuild with as many of the supertech valves from the bam head that arn't bent!

will strip the bottom end once i rip the motor apart but its stock bam apart from rods and a baffled sump so not sure if stock but new agu pistons will go straight in or have to go after market JE etc.

is it worth gettin the head flowed?

i intend to flow your example and get it flowing as best a possible, its running 1.6bar atm and things are gettin to hot for my liking so if i can get it around 330fwhp and reduce egt's then happy i will be.

gotta look into wmi though, was impressed with your results!

happy xmas to everyone by the way!

cheers
Paul

Will reply properly later, but its been a good day!

And some incredibly cool and unique carbon fibre place mats and coasters made for us by RobinJI :)

proper MotorSport Christmas :)

thanks to everyone for an awesome day :)

and thanks to mum for cooking dinner :D

Just found out that you can do a 'one hit wonder' one off entry into time attack series, and the car is already 100% compliant to the club class regs........

hmmmmmmmmmm

maybe one day :racer:

You so gotta do that!!!

Glad you like the coasters/place mats!

Fire extinguisher's a very cool thing to have, and it'll be lovely having the piece of mind of knowing it's in there. Looked like a really smart system you've got for it too, absolutely ideal for your use. Good luck fitting it, it looked like it'd be fairly straight-forward and it seemed like you'd already got most of it planned in your head.

It was great to get a few rides in the car, shame the weather prevented any real power getting to the ground, I could still get a feel for how insane the car is though.

Shame we couldn't take mine out more, it seems to have fixed its self now but it's developed another fault now. The good news is that fixing this new fault will be best done by jumping straight into the mods I was talking about with the suspension and brakes.

Ive been away but now im back. Hows the beast? I still talk about this car to friends haha.

Im on the search for a new one.

Ahhh, now I get it. That's a sizable unit. Too big for placement behind the intercooler? Or is this just a more efficient location?

looks so nice! would be a tad off perfect if you have a little boot spoiler : )

Time attack sounds fun. Where did you get you solid sub frame bushes from as I'm thinking of fitting some when I fit my front ARB? Glad you had a good Christmas. I'm hoping to go to the RR day on Saturday it'll be good to have a look at your car then.

A mate of mine did this 2 years ago... He has since done 2 full seasons.
If you do think about it let me know I go to most rounds

There was some 034 ones on eBay from a UK seller.

Yeah, failing that 034 are cheapest.

How are these for NVH Prawn? Got those top mounts fitted yet? Soon I'll only have the tyres for rubber in the suspension haha
