De iceing your car

So now has come the time of year when it's raining even more then usual, going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark and my personal favourite - de icing the ****** car in the morning!

When your tired and depressed at twenty past 7 in the morning when leaving the house to work and trying to be quick so your on time for 8 what a better thing to greet you every morning then your whole car iced up so you have to give your car door the falcon pull to get it open to then start the car, tell the polar bears in your car playing back gammon to get out, put it on full heat and blowers to run back inside and get some luke warm water or stand outside freezing your tits off while you use a little farty scraper so you can see to then still have to wait 10 mins when your finished shivering inside your car waiting for the window to de mist!

(please note this puts me in an even worse mood when my car nearside engine mount hadn't actually been secured properly, bolt fell out and the engine drops 4 inches shattering the nearside inner cv joint and obiliterating a drop link after a 200 mile trip on your sunday off which gives you a tasty mechanics bill for xmas after you spent an hour the night before in the FREEZING cold dragging it to outside the mechanics with a tow rope)

Unlucky mate!

I went with the stay in the car and demist for 10 minute option this morning, but after 30 secs, the missus came out with a jug of warm water and de-iced the whole car for me!

Well the neighbour parked half across my drive last night and I struggled to get in last night when I finished work got home at midnight off the back shift so not wanting to make a fuss about it and chap the door to get it moved I just got on with it and got my car in the drive.


Then I went in the house and got a 5ltrs bottle of cold water and poured it on his car before I went to bed about 2am I could hear him shouting this morning when he couldn't get his doors open never mind clear the windows.


That will teach the inconsiderate pr1ck.

Number of times i have left the lock de-icer in the glove box......... More so on a Monday after you decide it would be really clever to wash the car on a sunday and then it freezes ready for monday morning.... Lovely....

It baffles me how so many people faff about with scrapers and credfit cards for ten minutes or more when a jug of warm water poured slowly and steadily will clear the windscreen, rear window and all six side windows in about fifteen seconds.

If you can put your hand in the water and hold it in there quite comfortably without any discomfort, it's unlikely to cause any problems with breaking glass.

Luke warm mate, and the idea is to swipe the front wipers as soon as you melt the ice before it turns back into ice, if it's cold enough outside.

Thats what i do, i find it most satisfying knowing that as your unloading your last night dinner that your car is warming itself up, i also spray de-icer over the windows and let that do its magic,

also you can put cardboard over your front windscreen to save on the frozen glass and wipers game!

wouldn't dream of putting water on my screen, TBH.
i use the halfords/tesco "night before" stuff, the windows ice over but can't get a good bite and can be scraped off no bother. i fire the car up, put on the heater rear and the screen blower and she's fine in no times at all - the only slow down is when it's pure ice rather than frost. the 2.0 really seems to get warm fast and the blower's doing a great job in a minute or so, compared to some of my other cars.

the only thing that annoys me the wipers - even when chiseled off the glass they tend to be frozen and don't flex and therefore don't swipe properly.

On many Audis since the mid 90's, they have a heater element int he drivers lock barrel. If you lift up the handle for about 15 seconds with the door locked it activates a heater element inside the lock to melt the ice and free it up.

I know my B5 A4 2.8Q had this (I had no remote fob just a key on my first one), i'm not sure if modern remote central locking cars have it too.

I follow the mpemba effect (hot water actually freezes faster than cold ) , and just use cold water.... done in a few seconds and all is good...

2 points about leaving the car running... a) your insurance won't pay out if it's stolen...although how much is the risk you could argue... any person would still need to scrape the windows first! :lol: and b) the last time I checked, it's actually against the law if done on the 'highway' (i.e. side of the road)...

2 more pics taken just as we were leaving work. He had a terrible time trying to get in the drivers door ended up climbing in via the passenger side. Great to watch.

Use to do this all the time when i done night shift, this is the last thing you would want to see at 6am when all you wanted was your bed.
