Hi guys, my name's Robin, I'm 23 and based in South Somerset (Chard). I signed up on here a while ago as I've got a few friends heavily into their A3's, (a few of you guys will know Prawn and Jarrod) although I've not posted much so far as I don't actually own an Audi.

I've just finished a 20vt conversion in my mk2 Scirocco (Alpine white 1988 Scala), so as this seems like a decent forum it seems logical to start using it a bit more now I own something relevant, even if it is only the engine!

The car's running an AEB engine taken from a B5 Passat, and turned around with manifolds/turbo and gearbox off an AUG A3 engine. It's running a hydraulic clutch set-up using a classic Mini master cylinder and the Audi cable shifter mounting inside the cabin. Mods wise at the moment there's just a Toyosport front mounted intercooler and a custom made (by myself) full 2.5" exhaust system with a 3" downpipe as well as a silly blow off valve. (It's all I had lying around, and with no cat to kill it'll do for now, will be replaced with a proper recirculating type when I've got the cash spare.) It's using the full Bosch Motronic M3.8 management including the dials and immobiliser. Absolutely all the work was done by my self.

Future plans are for either a k03s or k04 to get the power up a little but most future mods will be aimed at handling with this car, in a 900kg car even with the standard 150bhp it shifts along pretty well so there's no rush for more power, and although the handling's good, I know there's room for improvement, at the moment the only handling mods are TA technix coilovers and 280mm front brakes.

It may interest a few of you guys to know that I'm planning on making a small production run of rose-jointed tubular lower arms for the 8L chassis at some point in the near future, hopefully including some roll-centre correction through dropped lower ball joints. Prawn will be getting the first prototype set and we'll see how things go from there depending on demand. The plan will be for their adjustment to start at the standard camber/castor for an LCR/S3, with all the adjustment increasing from those values.

I'll get some shots of the Scirocco up soon but I've not got any of it since it's been finished, I need to give it a damn good clean and get my new wheels (16x7.5 Azev As) back from a mates before it'll be looking how I want it, then it's just tidying up the old and slightly beaten bodywork.

So yeah, please be kind to the new kid!

Thanks Sandra. I'll stick up a couple of the photos I have got for now, but I need to get some more recent ones sometime, and some closer ones of the engine conversion.

This is it last summer before its old engine died and it sat in a barn for a year (playing with camera effects, no photoshop used):

The engine conversion mostly finished, still needed to fit the loom at this point:

I'm planning to give it a quick polish/clean this afternoon and I'll pop out to see if I can get some pictures after. It only hit the road with the 20vt in it last friday though, and I'm waiting to get my new wheels from the seller as those BBS were sold while it was off the road, so it's all a bit of a work in progress at the moment.

I'll definitely check out the other sections of the forum, thanks for the links.

Hi Robin, thanks for the pics, that is a lovely car, if you want to do a build thread, put it up in the project section, the guys will all love reading about your progress. Thanks for sharing your pics. :) x

I have read it robin, its totally awesome, one of the best i have read tbh. Thanks for sharing with us. :) x

Why did you choose an 058 block over the more common and possibly easier to fit 06a? Given you ended up with all of the ancilleries for an 06A anyway?

Good question. Price basically, I tried (and almost succeeded) to do this all without spending any more money than I sold the Passat for (£800), and I needed to find the engine ASAP, at the time I couldn't find a transverse engine much the right side of £500, and most were missing bits that would be vital/useful for the conversion. The Passat motor was bought from a guy who'd removed it with the intention of fitting it into his mk2 golf, so had all the donor car parts I'd need, and he wanted barely over £200 for it. I wouldn't really have considered it, but then Prawn offered a deal I couldn't refuse for all the bits to turn it around to mount transversely and it suddenly made a lot of sense. The way I see it a Passat's more likely to have been driven sensibly too.

The Scirocco uses mk1 Golf underpinnings, meaning that a lot of parts have to be custom made that in a mk2 Golf are bolt in as long as they're from the right donor, making it less important where the engine comes from. The only A3 bits I actually used were the box/shifter/starter, both manifolds and the k03 turbo, the rest's custom or Passat/A4 parts.

When he says a deal, what he means is he stole every single part I had lying around my donor AGU for my own recent build, my spare shifter, spare gearbox, spare flywheel, starter, alternator, and basically all my other spares, because I'm nice, and I REALLY wanted to see this car get a 20vt, and it didn't look like it was going to happen due to time / money contraints :( I couldn't let that happen!

REALLY happy to see this running mate, I think it's epic. You've also helped me get a load of crap out of the garage, and unless I happen to break any of the above parts in the near future, it appears that you got them all for free :racer:

I want a ride over christmas though :)

Welcome to ASN dude, we need some more technically minded people to keep some of the 'others' in check!

I'd best get a gearbox 'in stock' then I guess? You really should look at doing something about your box killing tendencies, maybe I could pay an 02j worth towards something a bit tougher?

You're more than welcome to a ride, in fact you're more than welcome to take it for a spin if you can wedge your self it in, the seats and driving position are more suited to little people like me than someone with your 'full size' stature. (Runs and hides). I think you'd really enjoy it, half way between your Mini and A3. (I do need to get the steering sharper though, that's no where near the mini at the moment unfortunately.)

(For the record, I didn't have the alternator in the end! All the rest though, yeah, that was kind of me.)

oooooooooooh, did you leave the alternator at mine? or take it but not use it?

Anything you didn't use I'll have back if you've got no need for it matey. I prefer to have a spare of just about everything possible, and georges old AGU had stocked me up nicely on just about every bolt on part I might require, but your cause was greater than my 'what if' reserves!

It's something I'd like to consider, but I just can't help feeling that I shouldn't need it at my level, despite the apparent on-going issues :(

The solution, I think, would be an LCR 02M box with a wavetrac diff, this would give me bigger ball and cage type inner CV's and a much bigger diff, but the problem is it would also require a new (and expensive) larger single mass flywheel, and a new paddle clutch setup, internal slave cyl etc etc, it's a fair bit of work, and a huge expense.

Don't think I ever got the alternator off you in the first place. I remember considering whether or not to get you to bring it to badger 5 and then deciding not to bother. I'll have a dig through the rest of the bits and let you have everything I've not used, if there's any AEB bits you'd want as well then let me know, I've got spares of everything. What's the deal with the inlet manifold now? I can ask Tristan how much he'd want to do the finish welding on an AEB one to enlarge the plenum and move the TB to the end if I did all the prep. I'll do my bit for free but he'd want a small sum to do the final welding. (I need to practice my TIG welding a little more to be confident.)

LCR box makes sense. Why would you NEED a larger flywheel? to engage with the starter or just for the clutch splines to match?

I'd rather go down the custom plenum route if we looked at an inlet manifold dude, there are universal plenums available for sensible money that can be made to work well, but it's all money at the moment, and with an impending session at the paint shop to finally put my talent fail behind me I think it'll have to wait.

I would like to lay claim to one of the AEB manifolds though, just so it's there for when the time does come for an inlet to be made.

With the 02M box, I'm fairly sure it's all different clutch / flywheel wise, they use an internal concentric slave cylinder and a 240mm clutch plate, vs our 02J setups with 228mm clutch and external slave, I think the starter and ring gear are different too.
