Stacey's Belated Yo Yo Build Thread

Looks awesome mate :)

What pads are you running up front? and what pads have you run previously?

Ferrodos in particular have a habbit of building up high pad deposits on the discs, all more track focused pads work almost entirely in the adherent range rather than abrasive, and adherent braking relies on a transfer of pad material to the disc.

Problems can often occur if you change from ferrodos to another more abraisve (less adherent) pad and the judder can be REALLY bad.

Also, the judder can often set in on a track day if you've not previously bedded the pads in fully. Please forgive me if I'm being patronising here, but unlike road pads, which require the standard few hundred miles of easy use, track pads require an absolute thrashing to bed them in.

typically, 20-30 HARD stops from 70-80mph down to 20 (do not stop the car), then drive around for at least 30 mins without braking to let it cool down. I tend to go out and thrash mine until I have smoke pouring off all 4 wheels, then take a drive up the motorway for a few junctions.
I've been in several cars with ferrodo DS pads fitted where the owners have 'thought' they had good brakes, but had infact never fulled bedded them in properly.

New discs, get some bad-*** pads, and bed them in the manly way and you should be sorted :)

£270.26 inc vat instead of £455.54 inc vat :p For the pair obviously

Have been running ds2500's all round for about a year and they've certinally seen some abuse and were best part of 2/3 - 3/4 worn before the track day so should be more than bedded in ;)

Have also got to search for some different pads as mine are nearly gone :(

Any suggestions baring in mind the ds2500's came in at £280 due to the size of the pad :faint:

DS3000's?

Sadly I suspect due to the calipers you have any performance pad will come with a premium attached...

I know this probably doesn't apply to you, but it's worth mentioning here for the benefit of others reading it,

Being 1/2, or even 90% worn down does not mean a pad is bedded in, if it's a track pad on a road car, it could have been operating mainly in the abrasive range for it's entire life, and never received the heat cylcing required to bed in properly and transfer a layer of pad material to the disc.

I've 'bedded in' Ds2500's for people that were already half worn, and the transformation in braking has been massive, even though they thought they were totally bedded in due to being half worn down already!

It does tend to scare people though when you have smoke and sometimes even flames coming from both front wheels

Also, a point of interest: track pads operating in the abrasive range (road use) tend to eat discs, but when used in the adherent range, disc wear is much less. I've been using the same discs on track for 16000 miles and they're not that worn at all! yet I've known people eat a whole set of discs in 10k using the same pads in road use :)

Pad cost was one of the main reasons i kept the LCR brembos on the track car and sold the Porsche 996 brakes along with the car to Pierre. the cost of Porsche track pads was HUGE.

Sadly, he's since found that Ds3000's for the 996 are CHEAPER than they are for brembos, and you get almost twice as much pad material on them.

Gutted is not the word :(

They have been put through many heat cycles in their time and followed the bedding in procedure reconmended by ferrodo, think it was something like 5-10 stops in succession from 70-10mph then let them cool and repeat the process :)

But have to admit I've never been able to push them to the point where you get bad brake fade on the road wether that is also down the the size of the pad and friction area...who knows

With regards to pads I think I may just run oem or simular pads on the road and then save the £££ ones for track but iirc ds3000's were >£300 which is why ended up with the ds2500's

Oh and Euros do sell Pagid R32 discs but they`re more expensive than OEM discs by £10 lol

Sorry must have missed your post somehow earlier

That sounds like a wicked price but am going to consider my options and see what is about ;)

Zimmerman do decent OEM reps. You'll probably quickly find it's OEM, Zimmerman or the ECS discs. Although finding OEM in the uk for a good price will be easier than here :(

Well not really to much to update

Got my head back from Andrew who has done a lovely job of it

Ive decided that this build will wait for IE cams now providing they materialise in the start of next year, if they dont i will more than likely get a set of piper cams

The bottom end is pretty much complete :)

Had a bit of a clearance issue with the pump and baffled sump, but was nothing a file and dremmel with carbide burr couldn't aid

Removed some off of what i pressume is a pressure relief just above the pick up

Had to remove some material directly above the left hand wire lock

Am starting to collect some bits in my US shipping account ready to ship over in the next few months

Would like to thank Cassidy at IE who has been very helpful and understanding as had a few issues with their black friday sale but managed to get an inlet at the full reduced price as well as a few other bits to go with it :yahoo:

Just a random pic of some new bits and a crank pulley which have drilled ready to be dowel pinned to the crank

Will hopefully be mocking up the head, manifold, turbo and wastegate with hopefully also my old box to see how the wastegate will sit with the transfer

No way! I added an inlet to my basket, took FOREVER and then it loaded at 715 :-( messaged them and they were like "oh you can pay 719". 599 is a good price really. 799 is a bit much.

I actually had 2 out of the 3 in my baskets as donme it on the iphone and works computor but due to site crashing and attempting to complete the checkout for nearly an hour i eventually lost them and i did take a photo of the screen for my own sanity but when contacted them they could see that they had been in my basket on my account and honoured them ;)

Ive also gone for the hemi throttle body which shall be interesting

They're still gits :(

I'll wait for a SEM I guess. Loads of RMRs about but look like an **** to fit and don't flow as well. You flogging yours? ;)

interesting on the sump issue!

May i ask how you discovered that? When we dropped mine on at B5 it dropped straight on and pressed down nicely, there didn't seem to be any clearence issues at all.

Head work looks fantastic mate. This is going to be an absolute monster when finished!

Just couldn't get the sump to butt up flush to the block as have fitted it various times without sealant just to obviously protect the crank etc when trying to shoe horn it into my work cupboard

Am hoping will be a monster and a nice all rounder with decent spool and still plenty of poke, am setting the goal posts quite high and will aim to break the 500 mark with cams....who knows though as builds can massively vary and I'm certainly not an expert with engines

Yeah is on ebay at the mo and willing to knock off fees etc if dealt out of the bay as robbing fckrs take 10% fee up to £400 value, so final selling fees would cost £40

His excessive + AEB inlet. There's a couple of RMRs on vwvortex but fitting and flow not as good as SEM and IE. Be good to see the excessive.

Need to start stockpiling for my build...

oh of course, your custom large port inlet!

Why you selling that dude? Going SEM instead?

Shame it's the wrong way round for me!

He was lucky enough to get the IE inlet at 25% off! I had issues when I added it to my basket. I should have photoshopped a screenshot haha

Also completely forgot to mention the fact the car is currently off of the road due to PAS pipe springing a rather large leak

It all started with a whine for a couple of days but steering was functioning fine, so when i got 5 mins i topped it up and when started it and wound round lock to lock to bleed the air out to find i lost the power steering and it had emptied its contents on the floor :(

Rung around a few that were breaking on thursday and found one that would part with both PAS hard pipes for £50 and he'd try and get them to me for saturday if not monday....well i contacted him last night and he's still not even sent them yet and will try wednesday.....what an **** i'm currently sharing the Ka at the time being till it arrives

Got to admit its probably my fault that its failed as when i removed the OEM hard boost pipe that supports one of the PAS pipes, i as a quick fix just cable tied it to the oultet pipe off of the pump with intentions to make a bracket but all got forgoten about

Will put up some pics when i get round to repairing it

On another note this also turned up which will hopefully be wiring up in the near future ;)

Sorry stacey I was very rude, your build is coming alone nicely, keen to see the vids when its done!

oh god :(

I used to love the idea of a WOTbox, then I went in a car with one fitted, and now I don't any more!

That said, if not abused I guess it's OK. Hobden set his up so it banged like feck on request, and destroyed an exhaust, 2 actuators, and seemingly even a set of exhaust valves!

Lol iv popped like a million times, its my party trick here! No issues yet? My other mate has had one for 2 years and also no issues? I love the shifting with it but hate the launch control!

lots, and lots of engine failures on 1.8T's with WOTboxes over here. Throwing rods out of the block on standard maps and all sorts.

Adam had one fitted on a built engine with rods, pistons, and valves, and whilst it didn't kill his rods, is destroyed an actuator, bent an actuator bracket, ****ed up the wastegate inside the turbo, ripped his exhaust clean apart, and on strip down they found damage to the uprated exhaust valves that they had never seen before, which it's assumed can only be down to the evil blue box of doom.

they also kill 02 sensors, a guy we know with a leon with a wotbox has killed 3 02 sensors since fitting his wotbox due to all the unburnt fuel and explosions in the exhaust, and blew his back box clean open splitting it down the seams!

Not cool!

i've been reading abit about wotboxes and '2step' antilag/launch control. seems theres lots of different types and set ups. and in some cases the myths of destroying engines arent true.
off to read some more.....:readit:

Very nice headwork there, One day ill source a Big port head for my build , still waiting to see the results of NA cams vs FI.

Fantastic build here!

With regards to the WOTBOX, are the features of the wotbox not the same as the No Lift Shift anf Launch Control that can be done on the stock ECU (ME 7.5) ?

Strange all the UNITRONIC guys and a lot of the REVO guys here use it, myself personally I have not heard anything bad about it until now with you you guys!

Got to admit as much as i love the lok of the IE mani i wouldn't have bought one if i hadn't got it for that price ;)

You will make 500 easy with your spec. I know mine needs some work but I'm going for 600 bhp now with a few changes

Am hoping so but will never know till the faithful day as may find a bottle neck or restriction here or there

Only just seen the sig as usually on tapatalk....love it :racer:

tell me thats not a wotbox

Shall i not tell you then ;)

To be honest i knew that it will be hard on hardware but not heard of horry stories like mentioned in the comments, but in fairness not done a massive amount of reasearch

I knew the obvious the unburnt fuel would have to ignite somewhere post block but just hadn't heard of the catastrophic damage mentioned.....well at least its all going to be v-banded so will be easier to rip apart....only joking

Will be doing lots more research before it gets spliced in
