Just purchased a Ross-Tech cable from somebody on eBay but am now wondering if it might be a fake. I haven't received the cable as yet but it should arrive in the next few days.

Is there a way of telling whether it's a fake by looking at the picture? Thanks

It looks like a genuine cable, but if you want absolute confirmation send a copy of that pic to user NHN as he is a supplier of genuine cables on here. :) x

Thanks for your speedy reply Sandra, my mind is a little more at ease now and will be fully at ease if NHN confirms it as being the real deal.

Looks the same as mine, you may have to re-register it as normally the software is downloaded and will work with that cable /original laptop it was registered to. pm NHN as he is supplier.

Does your cable have a number beginning with "HC" as mine doesn't? Mine just has "Rev.B" but no number beginning with "HC" next to it. Cheers

If its genuine it should've cost you at least £200

It looks genuine, but only way to confirm is to download latest version from RT website directly, test & show me a log of your scan on your car with this cable, just remember to get support on a 2nd user cable you must pay a $99 fee to RT.

Thanks NHN, will post a result of the scan once I receive the cable.
I take it I can still fully use the cable with all features without paying Ross-Tech as I don't need their support?

Will I need to ask the previous owner to remove the software (if it's installed on their machine) before I can install it on mine?

Cheers

You can fully use it yes, if its functioning as it should.

No they dont need to remove from there machine as the activation of the software is in the cable itself.

Well, the cable has arrived and I can't even get the VCDS software to recognise the interface.

I've installed the latest version of VCDS (11.11.4) and then plugged the cable into the laptop. It came up with "found new hardware" and automatically installed it stating "your new hardware is installed and ready to use".

I opened up VCDS and tried to test it but it states "interface not found":

I then checked Device Manager which shows it has been installed:

I uninstalled it and also tried to manually update the drivers by pointing to C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS but it states "the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed"

I also tried performing the test using port Com4:

Do you think the cable is dodgy or is there anything else I can possibly try? I have to say the cable does look very genuine.

Its a fake cable, counterfeit etc, send it back & request refund, buy once, buy genuine :)

As NHN and Santos have told you, it is a clone. A good clone - but it is a clone. The master thieves copy almost all details on the outside. But on the inside ..... well, let's say that is where they fail.

OK many thanks for your input and help guys. I've sent the seller a request for a refund and am awaiting a reply.

As NHN states, buy once, buy genuine! I should have done this in the first place but now I've got the hassle of returning it and looking for another one. I did, however, think the cable was genuine from its photo.

Thanks again

I have an original vcds that works well on my S3 8L. I have since bought a 07 Golf, so I've bought another from ebay. It has VAG 12.12 on the label and HEX+CAN Dual K & CAN <--> USB, Rev B. www.ross-tech.com.

Looks like I've been duped with a fake ross tech vcds :-(
Paid £190 for it too. :-(

The cable came with it's own software - I scanned it and it's infested with trojans.

Fake by sounds of it, claim through ebay/paypal for refund, report the buyer & buy genuine.

Why on earth would you risk this for £190 when genuine from me isn't massively out of that price range :)

Haven't worked out how to send PMs in this new forum sw ...

How much can you supply HEX & CAN USB VCDS for ?

60 squid saving ... if it was the real deal.

2nd etc owner/used cables don't come with warranty or support I'm afraid, so its not a saving overall I'm afraid, support on used cables requires a license fee, which is why imho, buying new is a great deal overall as all this is included.

If it's the auction that ended at 9.18 yesterday morning then i reported this as being fake to ebay & the seller, i never got a reply from the seller strangely enough :(
