New member, upgrading to an A3, but which one!?

Everyone is saying they love there 2.0TDI 140, and it makes me think I should just get one of them. At the end of the day when I have the money in Jan/Feb, I will pick the best car I see available with the best price/mileage/condition/specs etc..

Also what is DSG & Paddle shift? I see this all over but no idea what it means.

Just test drive some, everyone will have their own opinions and they are more than likely different to yours!!

DSG is Auto transmission and paddle shift is two flappy paddles behind the steering wheel to 'change gear manually' (just like a playstation steering wheel!)

I will do mate and wow, will have to get myself one with DSG and paddle shift then, may as well if I'm spending all this money! :racer:

Regarding that 1.6 S Line, I would not touch it.

I've seen that for sale about 4 months ago.. If you take a closer look to the car, i've found this:

The two tail lights are the 2008 ones, but on a 2009 reg? The wing mirrors have come from a 2008 model too. The inlays in the interior, not sure about this, were they on the S Line model - They look like a sport 2008 again.

Front bumper is also of a standard model, and doesn't have fog lights - All sports and S Line's have fog lights. What on earth is that sun band at the top of the windscreen?

Reg checking the car reveils it is actually a 'Technik' model, not an S Line. To finish it off, the car is a Cat C.

This can has been heavily damaged as the rear and front has been changed with the incorrect parts - Is it really a good job, if they have used wrong parts? I wouldn't touch it mate, and judging by those wheels and 'bosch' brakes.. it's been ragged to ****

If you do test drive a 140 tdi, it will be flat as a pancake and have no power past 3000 rpm. I came from a 1.8T a3 2002 and thought the tdi was slow, sluggish and boring. I had it remapped last month after 2 months of driving it standard. Now, it will blow the 1.8T out of the water and seems to throw you back into the seat more than my friends 200bhp remaped 1.8T.

Never looked back on the remap and it just goes and goes and goes when you want to and returns stupid mpg figures when you want to cruise.

I wouldn't of touched it anyway mate you can tell it's been ragged around.

Didn't notice all the different parts though as I am new to the Audi scene I wouldn't of had a clue lol, I also did a quote on that reg and was suspicious about the "Technik" coming up.

If only the winning bidder on the car knew all of this!

How much better is your car on fuel after the remap then mate as I would be interested in remapping mine if I got the 140 TDI?

Has your friend got the new 1.8 TFSI or the 1.8T? We have the 1.8 TFSI in a TT and a A4 1.8 T.

The 1.8 T is a poor engine to remap and only gives 20 ish BHP more, making it 180, and the torque isn't brilliant either.

However, the 1.8 TFSI is running a K04 turbo, which is the same as the Golf GTI. Remap figures from Revo shows that it gets atleast the same torque as a remapped 140 throughout the rev range and 220BHP! Amazing!

Haha :) I know mate! I'm 19 as well, good luck with the car purchasing! Are you at Uni by any chance?

Fastest quote i've had is a 2.0 TDI S Tronic !

Cheers mate, nope I'm not at Uni, I have just recovered from a operation on my knee from a Bike accident I had, hence the money that's coming in to fund my new car :ninja:

Haha ouch! Okay, have you ever thought of a Ibizia Cupra 1.4 TSI? Try insurance on one as the main driver and put your parent's as named - there about 2600 to get insured on!

I paid £1100 on my Golf 1.4 last week for another 12 months, when I do a quote online for the A3 TDI 140 I get a quote of around £2000 so I would only have to pay around a grand to upgrade to a A3 TDI, even the petrol versions are not far off, I think the 1.8T A3 was like 2200. I am not a fan of the cupras though :(

About 8mpg if not driving like a nutter. It's worse if you use all the extra available power though.

It's the 1.8T from the older a3. You've never been over to the 8L section have you? 1.8T's are remapped to 240bhp on the ko3s turbo over there mate. Who told you the old one was rubbish to remap.

Not bad, how much did you pay for the remap?

If you get a 'T' car, you have to remap it, it's the law! Seriously though, the first choice you need to make is whether you want Diesel or Petrol. Once you figured this out, you can then look at what sort of spec you want.

If I was you, Id be looking at either a TDI 140 (or 170 if you can find one) or a 2.0 TFSI. If you got a smaller engine, you'd probably regret it after the initial 'buzz' has wore off.

So far mate my heart is saying the 140 TDI sport. Then get a remap for better performance and MPG.

As for specs I want the best spec I can find, leathers, cruise control, climate control, paddle shift, bose audio, steering controls etc.. Doubt I'll find a car with everything I want though so will have to compromise ;)

Probably the best option, although a remapped 2.0 TFSI, which is already pumping out 200bhp, is hard to resist.

Yeah, quite difficult to find the exact spec you want but dependent on how much you want to spend once you've got the car, you can retrofit quite a lot of stuff such as cruise.

AUDI A3 2.0 T FSi S line Special Edition DSG # MINT # 1 OWNER # FSH # LEATHERS # | eBay

I did a quote on that for the fun of it, I would be paying like £2700 to get that insured which is only £700 of the TDI but oh well :nyah:

That's what I was thinking, I could get the leathers too and fit them easy enough, but I will be in no rush and will be keeping an eye out on eBay, auto trader and forums but I don't seem to see any for sale on this forum.

That's clearly not the same car then is it? Why are you talking about car's which isn't even in the same series :/

We have a 1.8 T 160 BHP A4, and the remap figures for them are rubbish. I figure that 240 is the S3 (210 & 225) model, because if it's the 150 and 180 your dreaming mate!

The remap for the 1.8 T (not the TFSI) 160 is rubbish, it will only pull out another 20BHP. Abit like the 1.4 I have now will only pull out another 20. However, the 1.8 TFSI latest engine is amazing!

I know the bloke so got a cheaper deal than any remap you can think of.

I thought the 1.8T was the old engine found in the older a3 8L and the TFSI engines were the petrols in the 8p chassis?

however if you are talking about the old a3 1.8t and think im dreaming you should take a little look at some of the build threads on the 8L forum and you never know.. you might learn something.

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-...52-frenchmans-a3-daily-track-all-rounder.html

i quote from that thread:

"224bhp from a st1 ko3S, That was back on Nikis gen4 stage 1 map, with just a jetex filter, and a 3'' DP and decat on the stock catback. Since then Niki has added a detuned st2 map (less boost due to std SMIC) with an additional 1.5 degrees of timing dialled in, as well as being the first audi to have R-tech launch control and left foot braking / brake boost mapped in. It absolutely flies!"

Dreaming? no

Hi,

I'm in exactly the same boat, 19 and after an A3, definitely the 2.0 tdi 140 bhp in sport trim. What could I realistically expect from a remap in terms of power increase, and how much more strain will this put on the engine? I have a budget of around £7500 therefore anything I buy will realistically have 70k miles on it. From reading around this forum it seems the turbos are a weak point, could remapping a car of this age be a recipe for disaster? also if a warranty company found it was remapped (granted I'm not sure how they would) then it would be void and I'd be left with a big bill.

Cheers

Power increase on the 140 quoted anywhere from 170 upto 190hp. Doubt 190 is possible though. Don't be surprised when the turbo is in bits after 500 miles of 190hp though.
