Hi, total newbie to VAG tuning (only ever left them stock before) but... picked up a car fit for a Scottish winter last weekend. I'll be honest and say that I like my Minis a lot (R53 in particular)...but i've also got a soft spot for quite a few things vag too

It's a Jan 07 motor.

It's just been detailed (not by me), the alloys all refurbished, new pads front & back & 4 new winter tyres fitted (Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4Ds). After a generic map (300bhp) The clutch is now slipping though, so will be ditching the stock clutch/DMF and going for the organic Sachs SMF set up. Would like to sort the cars handling after the clutch - H&R ARBs, full polybush & Bilstein Coilovers (probably just basic B14s).

What sort of cost am I looking at for the Sachs kit - around £900 - £1000 ?

It's a weekend car, replaces a mk6 Golf GTI (DSG) which was nice but too 'new and shiny' for my liking. The missus has a 2011 (facelift) 2.0 TDI Tiguan (4 motion and DSG), such a slow machine....

Just added up (on my fingers.. ownership of vag motors and it's 9... only 4 worth mentioning - mk5 & mk6 golf gti, b7 2.0 TFSI quattro & current 8p S3). I must like them a lot more than I though

For anyone that has a grudging respect for the R53, this is the one that did it for me

& it was 300 at the wheels (muppets, not the flywheel), killed my bank balance though.

Hi, welcome to audi-sport.net, nice cars. Have a read over the a3 8P section. Faqs threads at top of the page, lots of info in there. If you interested in local meets, click the link below and see what is happenning soon. I am currently looking into karting before xmas, then rr in the new year, then in the spring, we looking to to do a meet at go ape. There will also be a meet at another Audi dealership on the cards in the forseeable future. We have had a meet at glasgow Audi, and Edinburgh Audi meet was 4 weeks ago, check out the pics thread at the top of the scottish section. Enjoy the forum, and we look forward to seeing you at one of the meets. :) x

Scotland

Welcome buddy. You will pick up alot of info and gen on this forum. Keep checking the Scotland forum for events as we like to organise something every couple of months.

Thanks for the welcomes.

Got the car booked into Autotech in Edinburgh next Friday for a bit of work -
  • APR Turbo Back (sports cat)
  • APR Stage 2+ Map
  • Autotech Fuel Pump
  • Sachs Clutch, SMF Conversion and Sachs Master/Slave Cylinder
  • Pipercross Panel Filter
  • Full Service
They've been really helpful on phone and e-mail, will let you know how it all goes, can't wait to feel some decent boost.

That's me for the winter and looking forward to the Spring when I can get the handling sorted and decent summer rims/rubber.

Great service and very competitive prices from GNJ Motorsport (Sachs Clutch & Autotech Pump), very quick service from AMD too on supplying the Pipercross panel filter. Slowly getting to understand more about modern VAG tuning!

I've spent most of my car forum days on MiniTorque, where the abuse and advice are flying in equal measures. Should I be posting this up in a specific section to get advice, comments or a bit stick ?

It would appear that I was talking a fair amount of pish in my previous post... now updated (for anyone that cares).

Got the car booked into Autohaus in Edinburgh next Friday for a bit of work -

  • APR Turbo Back (sports cat)
  • APR Stage 2+ Map
  • Sachs HPFP
  • Sachs Clutch, SMF Conversion and Sachs Master/Slave Cylinder
  • Pipercross Panel Filter
  • NGK Iridium x plugs
  • Replacement OEM Cam Follower
  • Revision 'D' Diverter Valve
  • ECS Magnetic Drain Plug
  • Full Service
What else should I be looking to do while the car is in ?

The next phase (spring time) is -

  • Full polybush and solid engine mounts
  • Bilstein B14s (possibly B16s)
  • H&R ARBs
  • Quaife Diff
  • Decent summer rubber and lightweight 17" rims
  • Full corner weighting
  • New Discs (Nitrac) and I was hoping to use Carbotech pads (XP10s or 8s) but not heard much about them in the VAG world
All comments good and bad - very happy to hear them. As i've said I know very little about VAG tuning, and what little I do know is from t'internet....

The Quaife Diff on my previous Mini made a huge difference to the way the car handled, in theory it sould be one of the best mods that can be done to a Quattro ?

Head to the 8P A3/S3 section and get a build thread started - that's quite an extensive list of goings on. To be honest though, I'd sort the handling stuff now, and leave the power for later (save for the map, get that 1st).

A3/S3/Sportback (8P Chassis)

Also, not heard of anyone upgrading the diff... maybe speak to someone like S3Alex, he's probably got the most heavily modified S3 on here. If someone's done anything that complete he'll know about it.

Thanks for the reply :)

Completely agree though, whenever i've given out advice on the R53 it's always get the handling sorted as a priority (normally wishbone bushes to be polybushed, ditching the runcrap tyres, heavy oem wheels for something more effective, the obligatory german coilovers and for cheap/safe power slap a smaller pulley on the eaton M45 supercharger).

I started off with all the best of intentions to 'just' get a map, but it was the usual knock on effect of sorting out problems/potential problems that led to the power mods coming first. I won't be pushing it in the winter anyway (got some decent new winter tyres on), should be able to put the power down properly when things get a bit warmer and dryer once the handling mods are sorted.

I'll get a proper build thread on the go in the 8P section though, and will go for a nosey at S3 Alexs' thread.

Cheers
