Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

its a good discussion, and it hasnt gotten too silly yet lol.

i think the whole power to weight ratio argument is highly exaggerated, and is definately 'pub talk'. there are many cars out there, with seemingly incomparible power to weight ratios and the outcome would be very suprising. you cant base an argument on power to weight. For in gear acceleration in a straight line, perhaps, but it doesnt always prevail.

my thinking is (scenario in my head), lets say we have a fwd 350hp car in a corner, now there is only so fast a car goes round a corner, maybe slight difference between fwd and 4wd, but the apex speed will ultimately come down to chassis spec and setup rather than which wheel drive it is, anyway. Now lets say a 4wd 350hp car, maybe 100kg heavier, very similar chassis spec and setup is in the same corner, similar speed.... are you guys telling me the 4wd varient couldnt 1.accelerate sooner out of that corner, and 2.accelerate harder giving it a slight edge out of a corner? literally, point, plant, go, all 350hp deployed asap.

now i know you're going to mention power to weight, and the fwd will catch and overtake. but will it really, or will the 4wd have the edge ever so much, that once they are both doing similar speeds, lets say 3 figures, aerodynamics becomes the over coming factor, making weight meaningless, so the fwd doesnt catch up, or overtake.

all theoretical i know. But there HAS to be a point where the benefits of 4wd or rwd are worth it.

and whoever mentioned BTCC cars, they are power restricted to 300hp, have thousands of pounds of R&D spent on the car, have lsds, slicks, and fully tested aero mods. so hardly an argument

what you dont seem to realise is the extra weight, from entry to mid corner is also trying to slide off the heavier car from its momentum.. The additional weight carries its own inertia, and for the same contact patch from tyres, the lighter car will have a higher corner speed and be able to brake later, exit faster... Only thing 4wd has is more traction.

Fcn Jardo....

Why are facts based on this forum and an odd "fun day" ?

This forum is not the bench mark for the rest of the world is it??

Prawn does well on track because he is a ****** good driver and the car isnt bad too...:)

Who said anybody was racing? most peoples cars are there daily and cannot afford to bin it at combe, and prawns is actually set up for the track and not a compromise like most cars on here..

You need to get out just a little more ....:beerchug:

you are wrong dave. if jardo says it, its true, there can be NO compromise. dont you get it. jeeeez

Westy *** hurry up and get a derv so you can strip the sh!t out of the S3 and stand up for our corner lol.

So i presume a Plate diff is no good for the road? i assume it would scrub tyres like a MOFO, like you said prawny yours seems to be the best all rounder...
Do you think your LSD is contributing to the D/S failures?

plate diff on mine has'nt felt anything other than smooth... but just grips
I was expecting it to be snatchy etc but it never has.. but has superb traction when its locked under power out of corners.. The atb diffs on mine would struggle and continually vector torque to one side than another, which made it snake under power... Thats with too much power.

It could well be Dave yea, where most big power cars just spin the wheels up, in the dry, I have LOTS of grip from the semi slicks, and the diff means it locks both wheels and won't just spin out, so the CV's are actually transmitting a lot more torque than a 400bhp car on road tyres that just spins them up the whole time.

the plate types from what I understand can be very aggressive, and lock a lot easier. You don't feel the ATB lock at all, it's very smooth and soft, but does the job.

It's a fine line between all out track only, and keeping it usable on the road, and of course, budget plays a big part too. Like most things, my box and quaife diff were second hand too.

thats because the atb will never lock.. it cant. it transfers the torque to the slower speed output.. continually.. Never locks.
stick one tyre on grass and one on tarmac and it will spin.. Plate diffs wont. It needs "some" traction to be able to bias the torque.

This would be lots of fun :)

Fear not chaps, the banter about my lack of grip will soon end, BigAl will go and buy more tyres we don't need on ebay, and it'll all get back on topic.

I'm stuck at work until tomorrow night, then this weekend I already have my next improvement project to start, using bits of 3mm steel plate, a drill, some orange paint, a few shiney bits, some random parts from a volvo, and a massey Ferguson tractor brake pedal return spring!

What this space :)

Dave and SK, my post is in reply to all the numptys below saying the car needs Haldex and that the wheels don't spin in their TQS/S3/ whatever.

This next mod is going to be awesome, I am actually finding it hard to contain how utterly stupid and pointless it is. Niki and I had a good laugh about your rage the other day, stupid fatboy lol

You're just jealous.

I'm not surprised you had a good laugh about it, seeing as you told him I paid 3x what I did for it! If anyone actually paid that much for them, then I'd be laughing too!

Anyway, that is not for discussion here. All will be revealed, if, and when it works :)

Mentioning ADI...
A few years back there was a black mk1 TT blasting around at a fair rate of Knots, That was AWD , i think it was matt black , Stripped out. Went well, Does anybody remember it?

That sounds cool, I love the idea of a TT track car, it looks so much more racey than my timid little hatch back!

I'm really looking forward to ADI next year, with more and more forum members getting track tyres/ building track orientated cars, and swinging towards the trackday side of things, I reckon we could have some great events in the future :)

So wish I could go home and drive the beast now though!

Ah... No match for King Prawn though.:undwech:

Fact. The driver of that TT was a total ****, I had a chat with him and he was such a bellend. The lads with the ex WTCC Toledo that were competing in Britcar were a much hetter bunch. I loved that Toledo.

From about 99% of what you post i would say the same about you.
Get to know somebody first maybe?
If you didnt like him... Then his car was shat?

lol paul you very bitter today

Not at all.
People read me all wrong.
Yes i think the new King of the hill status is a bit OTT but... the lad drives a track car... and drives it well.

Best start cracking out the ply and replicating nige`s mk2 for that aggressive race look lol.

maybe im just reading it wrong sorry dude did not mean to be blunt, it just seemed like the last 3 pages you were very off.

I spent about half an hour talking to him, he was a ****. His car went out for two or three laps then went back in for one issue or another, I remember the car well and it was by no means a refined track monster. On the day Prawn was lapping roughly 1:18 which is ****ing quick. For me the suprise of the day was the 205 GTI, I would have loved to have seen Prawn and the Pug on track together.

Judging by your posts in this thread do you not think you are throwing a stone in a glass house? Just chill out, nobody has said anything about you or to you, so stop with the unneeded aggression and defense and lets all get back to being men :)

Why are you bringing my Dad into this Paul

I've found the replies, since the power was revealed VERY interesting. A smattering of sour grapes, envy (nothing wrong with envy) jealousy, lack of knowledge, no or little experience, keyboard warriors, (they've all done the Ring in 5 mins) and those who are clearly motorway drivers, who considerer cornering and braking second.

This car was built as a track car and was also an engineering exercise in what can be achieved. No compromise is the PRAWN motto and it has been successful.

:iagree: this, although I'd really rather let the argument lie now Big Bad, you shouldn't have stayed out all night partying and slept all day and joined in last night instead when the debate was in full swing

Anyone can have no imagination and build a technically brilliant M3, this is just a good bit of father and son fun and an experiment in seeing what can be achieved :)

Long may it continue :racer:

Having thrown my twopence in the ring it has to be said that the majority of the responses have been great. Its all l about pushing the boundaries and not being complacent.

Yeah i dont think any of us would ever seriously slate Prawn or the car for any reason. Its all a bit of banter which has been mentioned preiovusly.

Deep down we`re all nearly as chuffed as Prawn is at the outcome of the build and without people like him doing these projects and pushing the boundaries then passing on the knowledge to others so that we can follow on this forum would just be people reporting issues and problems with the cars and the place would be dull as hell. People like Welly years ago and still doing it now then Prawn following on from that. Westy for pushing the limits of the standard turbo and proving everyone wrong. Obviously all with the help of decicated people like Bill and Niki.

Just a few names as im sure theres many more that contribute and comments will be made about all those builds/people that may seem like digs or unwelcome opionions but at the end of the day we`re all greatful these people have the time and put the effort into making these great builds that benefit us all in the end.

We all love eachother really  (Apart from Jardo maybe haha)

Yay, everyone loves each other again

Dead excited about going home and starting on my next adventure. Tori picked up the last remaining package from the post office last night which has come all the way from Slovenia

****** hell what happened to this thread?? Prawn, whatever makes you happy. Good effort job done! Everyone go have some fun now.

I've not had to read that much text since I was at school 100 years ago :w00t:

Loving the route the track slag has taken over the last few months.
And to think I said you should re-shell it and start again.

The car truly is the pride of the Terrorist Squad. Big respect to Prawny and big Al

Denied, a 261bhp K03s is the pride of the terrorist squad. Prawns car was always going to be epic and is much less of a surprise. I was 73% certain your car was going to be ****.

:p

I don't care what anyone else thinks you car is fantastic. A true cutting edge car that has pushed the boundrys further on. You should be proud of what you have achieved and all the hard work you've put into it. I'm a little surprised at some of the reaction you recived but hay ho. What's next on the to do list? A bit of aero?

I've got to fit all of the above along with the main addition I've not yet got pics of.
Once that's done, Ive got brake cooling ducts to fit, and new pads all round.

Then, maybe then, ill get myself some plywood and start experimenting!
