Reesy's Big Turbo A3

Until I see evidence to the contrary I will continue to big up the high CR crew!

AGU engines make higher figures time and time again compared to their low CR counterparts.

Lower compression is only ever desirable if you're running into DET, which doesn't happen at our lowly levels with a decent tune.

I think Dan's new hybrid lump is running AGU pistons too, and he's getting no CF's at all at 286g/s or flow, so why would you ever go lower?

I know mate, I am all for it.. Westy isn't quite as chuffed when it comes to mentioning comp ratio's though.

Hoping that this with a Garrett will prove that quattro power is the way forward (berdum tish) I can't see why you need more power in yours, Leon is running maybe 265bhp and is very quick! With the CM tip from this, it'll be a rocket. Besides you can't get the power down until 3rd/4th anyway..

Besides you can't get the power down until 3rd/4th anyway..

And here-in lies the crux of my argument :)

Everyone says how useless FWD cars with high power are, because you can't get the power down properly until 3rd gear. this is almost certainly true.

But, how many times have you found yourself on a race track in 2nd gear?

Most track work is high speed 3rd - 4th gear type stuff, high speeds involved, not uber acceleration from 30mph.

Most tracks will only have 1-2 places where you would ever use second gear.

In second, mine can get the power down on track tyres no trouble, in 3rd, it feels like it needs more power. I'd imagine that post mapping it'll struggle to contain second even on track tyres, but it'll be hugely entertaining, then once into 3rd, it'll make the world go backwards.

Also remember that your ko4 at 265 ish in the leon is going to have a far more aggressive delivery than my conservative hybrid map, and it'll probably have more torque and 'feel' quicker from the seat despite that not being the case.

For big power, road use, sprinting, traffic light GP etc etc you'll always be better off with 4wd I know, but where I want it, at the speeds involved, the FWD doesn't appear to be slowing me down at all :)

But yours is also used on the road?

Also, I can imagine with another 80bhp, 3rd becomes pretty wild, even on track. Didn't you only have 291 last time you tracked it? So thats still 50 bhp more, and I'd guess 3rd is nearly unusable unless it's a melting hot summers day.

Don't get me wrong in the higher gears I can see your argument, and now that we have the Seat I can see that even your lard ***** a3 would be quick, but I just can't see the Leon particularly ever needing 80bhp more. Time will tell as once it's tracked it might be too slow.

Anyway enough about ghey 2wd stuff.

The injectors will be here tomorrow :arco:

thing is hw slow does it feel when you go on track compared to the road. nailing around country lanes at 70-80 mph feels bloomin quick, get on a track and its hard to ever go fast enough to actually seem and feel fast. its a strange thing.

as for CR, higher is potentially better, you cant ignore the maths n physics of it.
but at the same time its not going to give you an extra 10/20/30hp over a 9:1 car, the gains are going to be low to mid range mostly, which in my eyes is better than an extra 10/20 hp up top. area under the curve and all that shiz.

i have agu pistons and an N/A gasket for my engine, so a potential of 9.85:1 based on my ramblings in staceys thread.
im not after highest bhp i can get though, id rather have epic 'area under the curve', which i honestly believe will make a car faster than another with a higher peak.

The Ibiza Cupra that Tam's mate Pete brought on Saturday is running less then 200bhp and on the straights I was only pulling on him as I got into 5th gear! I was quicker through the bends but that was down to the Quattro and me being a bit more confident. All this track business is all about power to weight and us Quattro owners can't compete with that. I really want to have a good old crack at stripping some serious weight from the S3 at some point in the future.

As most of us use the quattros on the road though we can conclude that Prawns car is rubbish.

Surely if your going to be pullin the engine apart for whatever reason it makes sense to fit a n/a head gasket for the sake of £20, at the end of the day its not going to make it worse is it!

On another note, have you managed to get hold of any adr cams reesy?

Oh yeah the Quattro is superb on those wet or icy days and I'll be lookin for a Quattro A4 TDI when I buy a new daily.

I think a fair bit can be stripped from the S3. Get rid of all the interior and AC and that's a good couple hundred KGs. Then break out the swaging tool :eyebrows:

Haha, thanks Reesy

In the wet, yes, it's utterly useless.

In the dry though, I'd happily (and confidently) take on any of you 4wd lot

Wild is what we want though :rockwoot::rock:

On track I often run actuator pressure anyway. Lots of power is purely for comedy value on the road, it doesn't make the car any better really.

Of course, there will be the odd times on track when I'll feel some form of BMW or subaru needs dispensing of post haste, so I'll flick the switch and use comedy power to blast past them :)

If its pure speed you're after, just buy a motorbike. Simple.

Got home today to find these had arrived:

Awful pics, but they are the 630's..

Don't tell me you actually paid full price for something Chris? and they're new too?

You've changed!

As well as the injectors arriving and the mani being ordered, I also ordered up a large collection for the downpipe:

5 bolt flange, 2 x 90 degree bends, 1 x 3" Flexi, 1m 3" pipe, 1 x 3" 45 degree bend and 2 lambda bosses are ordered.

Pretty sure that's it for the exhaust, just got to order 500mm of 2.75" pipe to replace the resonator on mine, and some exhaust wrap.

Bearing in mind I only ordered them Thursday about 1.30pm, most of the exhaust bits arrived yesterday.

The diameter on the 45 degree is a little bit smaller then the rest, but not unworkable so it should be fine.

Due to my own poor planning it looks like the turbo change is off this weekend :(

Need an oil feed line before tomorrow which is highly unlikely. ******.

Looking good mate ;)

Sorry completely forgot to text back the other day and the thread has reminded me, but didn't have one anyhow as getting all lines custom made

Can't wait to see what it can do....your putting me to shame with how quickly it's all going together lol

shame you went for that pikey manifold, an AKS top mount one would have been much nicer!

Still, I'm sure it'll fly regardless

It will be changed out for a top mount one at some point, but for now this should serve the purpose I need it to. As you say, I think it will go pretty well regardless!

When looking at it on the block its quite a big turbo..

Thanks a lot mate, difference is I'm not doing it myself and you are also doing everything.. That said for a while my car should be faster then yours. \o/

True true it certinally will be a fast if not the fastest A3 estate ;)

I don't think that anyone else has been stupid enough to tune a proper a3 8L with 5 doors, so I think I have that accolade in the bag.

which ones are the N/A engine codes???

stacey, you have explaining to do. where are you????
show your self!!!

Not sure what the reference is but ADR is n/a

As Dan says, ADR is N/A. That's the engine the inlet cam from my car is from.

I don't know where stacey got his measurements from, but the Gazkets are the same for the N/A and Turbo'd cars.
