why are you coasting around? cooling off or track etiquette? (are they strict @ bedford?)

Was taking it easy Bill, the car has to get my gf to work too lol.

They are quite strict at Bedford though. I got told off for having my headlights on as it apparently intimidates other drivers as I come up behind them! I was trying to make my dark car as visible as possible.

I also got 2 noise warnings and told to spread out from other cars as the 2 cars together were close to the 100db limit. They have really strict sound limits as it's not a proper race track and they have loads of restrictions due to the local residents :(

I drive with my headlights on with the sole purpose of intimidating other drivers

I always drive with my headlights on :p

Improves visibility and isnt ****y like folk driving around with sidelights and fogs.

If folk get intimidated then thats their issue not mine :D

I would be banned in seconds then.........
years ago I did a howfast day there and it was strict then... that was in me jetta... many moons ago.
Badgerwagen would freak the other track users out as the closing speeds would be significant.

Shame, as its a flowing open place to exploit the handling in as relatively safe environment as possible.

Not likely they would tolerate my car if thats what they told you.

Electric cars maybe the future.. lol

I always drive with mine on too but apparently it's intimidating the the Marshall told me to turn them off :(

Kinda a moot point given all modern cars run uber bright DRLs
daft rule imho - any old excuse to maon to you..

"hello!!! this is a track day is'nt it?"

reminds me of donington where I was removed off track for being "too fast" - Have you ever heard of anything so stupid in your life!

There was a guy there in an E36 M3 and he had 3 complaints against him for his driving!

We were told in the safety briefing that "this is a public open pit lane day and safety is the most important aspect. No overtaking in the bends, only on straights, work with each other, indicate out the way, blah blah blah".

The M3 owner was driving like you'd expect on any race track, trying to get round as fast as he can, exploring the limits of his car, etc but he was overtaking in bends and generally driving exactly how they told us not to in the briefing lol.

sounds like the usual "briefing", difference being they enforced it unlike so many other tracks.. (combe for example)

rich boys in their toys often moan the loudest... and behave like its their "personal trackday"

Please tell me more!
That has got to be the strangest reason ever !

This one by any chance?

Prawn did i see right a few weeks ago you mention somewhere that you MUST have a cage fitted if you`re running slicks? Because there was an old 5 series there running slicks with no cage, no buckets, no harness. Then at the end of the day he swapped his slicks over for nice road friendly 888`s lol!

yes, that was in the Leon build thread.

An old 5 series? What a winner, must have been a handful

Westy: that pic is from Dan's build thread for the M3, I've met him a few times at various trackdays, he's seriously fast, was lapping Bedford in 2:46 last week.

Didn't realise he was being a naughty boy though :p

Yeah Paul spoke to him as Paul's building an M3 race car. He was driving as I'd expect for the Nurburgring or any other race track but apparently 3 people complained about him. One of those people was probably the same person that complained about my headlights :motz:

its a bit of a shame now with bedford :( went earlier in the year and got black flagged because we came up on other drivers too fast then again for noise :(

haha, nice.

Daniel is VERY fast, surprisingly so for a relatively stock engined 3.0, it's a lovely car too.

I'd love to come and do Bedford soon, I didn't realise the track was SO long!

sounds like bedford is a waste of time if you are quick in a quick car

dissapointing

Shame isn't it?

I know Goodwood is particularly sensitive, but despite passing the static 100dBa limit at just 86dBa in the A3, I was still tripping the track side noise monitoring stations at 100dBa at full chat exiting the chicane.

Sounds like anything remotely noisey or quick gets into trouble!

Think they`re probably stricter on the busy days like it was on saturday. Last time i went back in march time there were no problems to report at all but it was quieter and the track wasnt so busy. On saturday there were 4 to 5 cars getting backed up from slower drivers or drivers that werent moving over/letting off to enable faster cars to overtake.

Its the council that set the db levels. But to be honest i deliver parts to Hudson Kapel which are based at Bedford Autodrome just on the other side of the complex/track to Palmer(turn right instead of left as you go through the gates) and when theres a track day you can hear the louder cars but the noise is really quiet considering the compound i deliver to is just on the other side of the big mounts along the main straight so really i cant see how anyone can hear the cars much at all for them to be strict on noise. But saying that Bedford is one of the higher noise reg circuits.

We were on a 100db day but if you go on a weekday which i did last time and its raised to 105db.

My car was fine until I was close to another car and then we got a noise board and told to "spread out", so that stops racing from happening straight away :(

Prawn, can you ask your M3 mate if he took any footage?

Disappointing to see you had to back off on the straight, I'm sure I hit 120odd in my S3, and 140 in a Merc SLK AMG32 when I went there in the past! Is this like a novice day or something? I was allowed to go full throttle maximum attack all the way round!!

Stacey was touching near 140. It was no different to any other day rule wise. As i say i think it may have been because it was so busy.

You didnt need to back off on the straights at all but at times it was a case of you overtaking people and some people werent letting off for you to pass which meant you had to back off and slot behind them for the chicane.

Like Jason said we did hit 140ish down that straight earlier in the day. I had the Ibiza infront o me and Stacey behind an it was a stale mate along there.

You also have to remember that my car has no safety devices at all and Is used as a daily so I wasn't going to go too mental and risk binning it. I will get to a stage where I'll have a daily car and the S3 will be stripped, caged, with bucket seats and harnesses then I can push it a lot harder :racer:

im with you on keeping it sensible fred.

despite all the limitations i think bedford seems the perfect track for a novice to gain confidence and explore their car. Then they can move on to 'maximum attack' track days elsewhere.

To be honest i think its ridiculous that people complain about people intimidating them, its a track day!

Most of the problem is that people dont use there mirrors, which is why faster cars end up sitting up their chuff, yes okay people need to learn the track, but still they shouldnt hold up the people that want to enjoy the track after all it costs enough.

I dont understand why Westy got told off about having lights on, like he said it helps people see you coming up behind them, my M3 has relays fitted so that at the touch of a button the lights will flash on and off (same as the front running cars in the VLN endurance races)well see if that intimidates peoples :)

Anyway rant over and well done Westy your car was great at the weekend

I have a horrible feeling that the coil pack wiring is now shot! I had multiple misfires on the track day last week but it seemed to clear when I swapped over the coil packs. The misfires have returned again tonight so I'll have to check over the wiring tomorrow night.

What's the deal with replacing the wiring? I seem to remember it was a horrible fiddly job and not just a plug and play part unless things are different on the BAM?!
