Certinally a lot of people and variety attending and westy is right the S3's are going to be there in force and well represented ;)

There's 5 of us in amongst that lot including 3 S3's, a seat Ibiza and a vauxhall nova :)

Thought I'd make a start on bolting bits and bobs together and all was going reasonably well

Then trial fit first piston and rod assembly.....**** it!

Piston hits the oil squirter!

So that means either space the oil squirter out or grind some piston away but that will require rebalancing :(

What's peoples thoughts?

do you know how much clearance is needed ?

Try some washers under the jets if that doesn't work machine the jets and if it still needs more then the pistons will need some light machining doing.

As with mine it has a longer stroke so i did all of the above to get the clearance i needed

The washer may protrude out enough to still hit the piston... personally I would take it from the piston... sorry dude...

Its a fooking pain that these pistons aren't already clearanced as they are sold as stroker pistons ***!... I would have a word with IE tbh and see what they say... I assume the instructions don't mention checking dry before assembly?

<tuffty/>

Being that they were custom pistons made to IE's spec I would have thought this would have been taken into consideration especially with the $$$ I paid for them would expect they are perfect and just slap them in but am extremely peeved as expected them to be fine and some of the pistons have had a lot of material removed to get them within a tenth of a gram tolerance for the balancing to now go through it again and pay for it again!!

I need just under 2mm clearance which can get by machining both sides of the squirter and spacing them out but it would still be to close for comfort as would like to see more clearance cold and dry so think I will have to get the pistons remachined and re-balanced :(

I generally would expect a lot better quality regarding fitment as a lot of other kits that require mods state so in the add but these didn't and that is what swung me to the 2008cc conversion rather than the diesel 2067?? Conversion which knowing what I do know would haven

Update :)

First I'll start with the more exciting bit, went to Bedford autodrome yesterday for an open pitlane trackday with Westy, Tam, Pete (big cheese) and a friend from work, JasonS also graced us with his presence (was nice to eventually meet you mate)

Well all in all had a brilliant day and will certinally be doing more track days in future

But the day did have some panicky moments where I feared I had done some serious damage to the engine! as after the first session I came back to the pits to find the catch can was overflowing with oil!

This is a comparison of what Westy drained out of his (top) and mine bottom (although I filled 1 and a half cups)

F38B2D55-5B14-490B-890D-46799948BEB1-3381-0000030A13031D73.jpg

At this point I was crapping myself as being the sensible self I am? and knowing how hot the car gets on day to day driving I obviously had run the car on low boost to start with and would build it up during the day?? Well during the first session the egts were constantly over 900 and peak of 1025 degrees, and with that in my head and all this oil paranoia really set in

At this point I was close to coming home early in the fear of doing damage to the engine, but thought I'd give Bill a call as always seems to be like smarties and have the answer ;) in which he straight away said it's under heavy braking the oil is going up through the crank case breather, which was a big sigh of relief

For most of the rest of the day I run the car on actuator pressure (0.6-0.7 bar) and just had drain the catch can after every stint which was roughly 4 laps and check the oil level as used over 2 litres of oil in the end

The rest of the car held up well apart from the brakes which the front discs warped after the first stint and just got worse throughout the day

To my supprise as well you can feel the tyres start to almost go off were they start to feel like the tyres are moving about to much like your driving on under inflated tyres?

Here's a couple of pics of the Tyres at the end of the day (not best pics in the dark)

I did have one spin and it was one of them moments with a slight lapse in concentration thinking was it 3rd or 4th I take this one and before I knew it I was coming into the corner with to much speed and had over ****** it resulting in a spin lol

So it had it's ups and downs and can't wait to book another but I can conclude that I'm a pen1s for not fitting the baffled sump and need to look at getting better cooling to the brakes

On other notes I did get the alignment done Friday, here's a quick pic of the print out

The pistons have also been machined and will hopefully start building the bottom end this afternoon if it's quiet enough ;)

I managed to borrow a set of scales to rebalance them if any other changes are needed but without rings on there's only 0.2g difference between them

I'm a bit disappointed in the quality to be honest mate as put it on YouTube last night

Wish I had got some more pics and vids as only got a vid of my session where I spinned.......typical lol

I'll see if I can post a link on my iPhone ;)

haha awesome little video mate, looked to be going well indeed.

Can't believe your EGT's get SO high though, that's unreal!

Also, just an observation - you change gear like an absolute monster! Never heard anyone change gear so fast, sounds like a DSG up through the gears!

Cheers mate we some how have got the data on harry's lap timer but can only find the video in my pic gallery without all the lap timer stuff inset?

What wasnt shown in the vid was that spent a couple of laps hunting the bm down and stuck behind it for a while and when he eventually let me past and I loose it and go straight back behind him lol

Yeah egts are the main thing that is always holding the car back I still hit 980 egt peak on actuator pressure (0.6-0.7 bar) :faint:
Am hoping that can run the new turbo at lower boost on a trackday and keep everything a lot cooler as well as having more umph

I suppose I am a little brutal with gear changes lol, my short shifter certinally helps ;)

May explain how I ended up breaking the selector fork on my old box with the worn syncros lol

high egt's from a very restrictive hotside/turbine combo... sucky sucky

track use is going to always show up issues in things....

like keeping the oil in the engine etc lol

been there, done that as they say...
baffled sumps ftw

Looked like an awesome day.

I can imagine the 6 pots work well. I am loving mine. Don't care if they are seen as overkill to some. Look awesome, work awesome. Sorted.

Are you going to get your discs skimmed or bite the bullet and go 2 piece? ;) I'd look into 350mm if you have the budget after that mammoth engine build and all the calendars. Apparently compbrake done 350mm versions of the R32 discs.

They have and i have them with there 6 pots

Update for you mate

Head all done, just finished it about 5 minutes ago so just need to drop it off at the machine shop for a light skim then its back for a rebuild, will be doing the inlet when the head is in the shop

Definately something worth looking into as don't want my brakes going like this again ;)

But yeah the 6 pots were brilliant till the discs started to give lol

got any shots from the other side andrew?

stace that was awesome, what a spin. doing us proud aswell chasing down what looked like an e92 M3?

Cheers mate absolutely loved it.....I've got the bug now ;)

I used to think I could drive pretty fast on the roads but track was night and day different due to rediculous grip once you get going....well that is until you gi to fast into a corner lol

Said the same thing after the last time I went to Bedford. Driving on the road just seems so slow compared to how you can drive on the track. Makes you wish you could go there more often and smash out a few laps.

Some people can because it's on their doorstep unlike myself so maybe you should smash some more out ;)

The rate you went through fuel yeah lol. Neil just drank meth like it was going out of fashion!

Suppose you've got pads and discs to pay for now though. I can see what I can do on oem discs when I'm at work if you want?

Stacey mate... when you get to it please check your Tial wastegate... mine has undone itself which gave me a few kittens as I thought the turbo had gone!!...

<tuffty/>

If I remember right, you have the EBC discs right? Even the OEM ones are kinda 2 piece (but can't be seperated). If you can get them for a good price, it might be worth doing. It'll be melted pad causing the warped feeling.

-Warped- Brake Disc and Other Myths

^^^ I agree with Sam, on the whole, discs don't warp, they just develop judder due to a built up of pad deposits.

Yeah if you could grab us some prices that'll be lovely

Yeah have got plain ebc discs Amd have read that these are rife for this problem and they're not now selling the cheap plain ones anymore (how true that is I don't know) am thinking of giving them a skim but have read that once it's happened once it will just come back again?

Just read throughout that link and is very informative but unsure what to do?

Think I will give it a nice hard drive on the road a couple of times and see how it goes? As have read that you can save the discs by putting them through a few reasonable heat cycles, but suspect may have gone past the point of return has kept hammering them with them shaking the car to bits lol ;)

Will probably try something to cure but think I will be searching for some new discs

Little update

Did manage to get the bottom end pretty much together yesterday, and it all turns over nice and sweet ;)
