My Adventures in Plasti Dip

I thought I'd share my adventures in Plasti Dip with the forum.

Here it is.

It started off small, little 400ml spray tin and I did my engine caps.

Gave them a good scrubbed with APC, rinse off with water and let them dry in the sun.
After a couple of minutes I started to spray them.
I did several light coats until they looked even and dark.
Moved them in the house for 24 hours to full dry and then fitted them to the car.

I also did my dip stick since it stuck out a bit.

That's it, I got the bug. I then walked around the car finding out what else I can dip.
My attention went to black and rubbering items on the car.
Window rubbers and wipers.

Same process as the caps but with out the ability to remove them from the car easily and move in to a my spray booth (a cardboard box). I left them on the car and tapped up the windows and body to stop over spray.

After a clean, rinse, dry, spray, remove over spray and tape. They was done.

That's it, I love this stuff. I'm off to buy a spray gun and 5 litres of the stuff and go mental.
And that's that I did.

I don't like randomly spraying items just for tests, I like it to have a reason for it to be painted.
That way I'm not wasting money, time or dip on pointless dipping.
But I found one and it was the girl friends 206 GTI.
Someone colour coded the rub strips but did a really bad job and it started to come off.
To save money and give me some practise I decided to dip them.

I removed all the side trims. Sanded them down cause they was starting to flake. Made them smooth, cleaned with APC again and set about painting.

All the trims removed and sprayed.

Not a bad finished but it did not help that it started to rain.

Now it was time to do the car.

I left about a 2 inch gap between the bit I wanted to paint and the new paper. Its better doing it this way then trying to mask a good, neat line between the strip and the bumper. The dip will not bridge the gap, so you get a perfect line on the trim and once its dry you can peel the over spray dip off, quick clean the surrounding area and you're finished.

With the pug done and some nice weather for an afternoon I thought it be rude not to do something else.

So I did my grill

and my roof.

It was suggested to me to plasti dip the car and do a charity raffle for charity where the winner peels the dip off. lol

But no, I like my red.

But no, I like my burgundy.

But surely that's the idea of the charity thing. It gets painted, then peeled off reasonably soon after, leaving the burgundy paint work on display again?

For charity I would do it.
But I would not do it for a long term.

How do you think wheels would take to plastidip? I have a feeling they'd just flake off. I have a mate who wants his wheels doing but not sure how they'd cope in long term...

From what I've read they last very well.
Just need to look after them like you would with normal wheels.
Make sure the surface is nice and clean, the dip should stick well and last a very long time.

Been playing with some clear dip and glow in the dark powder.

Here's a some bike trims I've been doing.

The powder never fully devolves in thinner or dip, so you can still see when close up

But further away you get the less obvious it becomes.

Give it a little bit of light to charge it, put it in a shaded location and it will start to glow.Which is a good sign.

Give it a couple more hours to go off fully and a bit more light to charge it up then I'll shove it in the dark and see what happens.

Deffo last longer in the field if you spray in "glow in the dark" less chance of Mis placing it if you do night shooting

The stock should not be problem but cause its wood you won't be able to remove it afterwards.

not sure how well it would hold up.
I got some dipped wood out back, I'll attack it and see what happens.

Soon as this rain lets up and the wood dries out I'll let you know.
I got a couple of wood pegs that got some over spray and they seem to be ok.
Cause the dip will soak in to the wood a little bit itit will make it harder to strip so should be very good.
I want to hit it with a a hammer and bounce it along the floor but I think it will be fine.

They say its heat resistant up to 300 degrees.
I made a video of PD vs a hot air gun


All the items I have under my bay are doing fine, even the dip stick and I thought they would have faded or melted by now.

I did not do to badly.
You hit it or dent it, the dip stayed on the wood but if snagged the dip or cut in to it and lifted it it would peel off.

I don't know how you treat your rifle or how much abuse it would get in the field.
If I did it on mine it would last a really long time but that's cause it spends most of its life on a wall or when it does come out it sits on the roof of a boat when used.

Bit of random one.

A mate asked me if I wanted to dip his girl friends shoes.
Why not. So he posted them down and I dipped them, well one of them for now.

I recently bought a stupid cheap double din unit for my B5.
It had one slight issue, the dash surround was broken.

I knew this before I bought it and I can buy another one and still make a saving over any other complete unit.
While I wait for my old dash to sell, I thought I might as well bodge this one together and coat it in plasti dip.


The bodge. What I should of done is filled the wholes in but for some reason I never thought it until I started spraying.

Also did the section around the hand brake.

You Can still see the bodge. I should have filled the holes, sanded and made it look a bit better really, even if its only going to be in the car for a 2-3 weeks but I got impatient and wanted to dip.

With about 4-6 coats it came out very well I thought and the dip kept the orignal pattern of the plastic.

Hopefully going to fit it all this weekend along with a new evaporator and double din stereo. If the fitting kit turns up.

I think i would be the same given a spray can. Although you did take it to the next level when you sprayed your whole roof.

The gun/guns cost from £80 up depending on the gun.

Got a pair of dancing shoes to do, pair of Doc Martins and a transit van.

With the price of phone cases at the moment, its not really worth it.

I'd rather do cars.

Not used it yet. Can't think of any thing to use it on.

Any HVLP sprayer will be fine.
